Meyer back for Bulls
Heyneke Meyer has been announced as the Bulls’ director of rugby.
His official title is Executive: Rugby Coaching, and the role, detailed in a press release from the Bulls, entails the following:
High Performance - Manage and co-ordinate all coaching structures and services required to support the development of the game covering all the Blue Bulls’ professional and amateur teams including the clusters and clubs. He will also manage and co-ordinate other relevant aspects such as development, sports science/medicine, and related support services.
Game development - To support cluster and club coaches.
Training & Education - To present various specialised courses and clinics for coaches and referees.
Meyer, who was the head coach of the Bulls for eight years before his acrimonious split from the franchise in late 2007, could also be closely involved in team strategy, tactics and player recruitment.
Current head coach Frans Ludeke will continue to be in control of day-to-day playing issues and man-management and he will be responsible for daily training and preparation
Under Meyer the Bulls won four Currie Cup titles (one shared) and became the first South African franchise to win the Super 14, in 2007.
He went on to coach the Leicester Tigers in the Premiership before returning to South Africa to be with ailing family members. Most recently he was linked to director of rugby role with the Lions, but the Johannesburg franchise opted for Dick Muir instead, citing Meyer’s hefty asking price as a primary reason for their choice.
Meyer’s return is a massive coup for the Bulls. He is credited with assembling the core of the formidable squad they now boast, and also established the playing structures around which the Bulls’ approach is still based. He is immensely respected by the players, and will offer Ludeke an excellent sounding board for ideas. His keen eye for young talent will also be beneficial to the Pretoria union.

November 24th, 2009 at 2:17 pm

November 24th, 2009 at 2:19 pm
@boktoinfinityandbeyond:
Yebo yes sir…
November 24th, 2009 at 2:21 pm
Just one correction there Ryan…
The keen eye for talent in the Bulls is one Mr. Ian Schwartz…
November 24th, 2009 at 2:25 pm
@PissAnt:
Why would you say that Pissant ?
November 24th, 2009 at 2:30 pm
@Blouste:
He is the main man that scouts talent throughout SA for the Bulls…
If you want to thank one guy for who the Bulls identify and contract, look to this man…
November 24th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
@PissAnt:
Must admit I always thought that kudos went to HM.
Well he is doing a good job at it no doubt.
Think Heyneke being back is a good thing though.
He did a good job at implementing structures at the Bulls and although the evidence of that was still seen after he left I felt that it did start to deteriorate some what.
Almost as if the junior teams didn’t fit in so well when pulled up to senior teams like in the past.
Time will tell…
November 24th, 2009 at 2:40 pm
I wonder how his wife is doing. Hopefully better
November 24th, 2009 at 2:41 pm
Good move , bulls will only get stronger and stronger from now on.
November 24th, 2009 at 2:43 pm
@Blouste:
It is a major coup by the Bulls.
Heyneke for my money should have been DOR of Bok rugby…
November 24th, 2009 at 2:44 pm
@Blouste:
Ian is one of the unsung heroes at the Bulls union.
November 24th, 2009 at 2:46 pm
@PissAnt:
Who knows, maybe in good time…
November 24th, 2009 at 2:50 pm
Hell yeah!!!!
November 24th, 2009 at 2:53 pm
I wonder how much he is costing the union though?If the lions could not afford him,but could afford ****,how much is his asking price?
November 24th, 2009 at 2:53 pm
Acrimonious split? What happened?
November 24th, 2009 at 2:57 pm
@usualsuspect:
We’ve got all the money from Habs
November 24th, 2009 at 3:02 pm
@Blouste:
Habs left you guys with a big Xmas bonus lol!
Cant wait for the super 14,But Im worried about my backs…….Adi havin shockers,Strauss is not my idea of a center,Waylon just never fully got back his form,Ruaan a bit rusty now days,Hernandez wont be here for ever(jus like fredrick,thiery,etc etc)
We should be investing in backs about know!Or we wont be competitive in the super 14!
November 24th, 2009 at 3:15 pm
tacitus will have to roll out the three-ply heavy duty toilet paper when he hears this (you know, the stuff he usually reserves for when pierre spies scores a try).
November 24th, 2009 at 3:30 pm
Got to give it to the Bulls….professionalism personified.
If they get a class tighthead….goodnite nurse!
Super 14 will stay in Pretoria.
November 24th, 2009 at 3:44 pm
@grant10:
i disagree,the nature of sport is that you cant win them all!
Next year will be a repeat of 2008 for the blou bulle!
November 24th, 2009 at 3:49 pm
I’m afraid I have to agree with USUALSUSPECT, maybe for different reasons.
Our Boks are tired and next year will be the year to rest them more often than not, getting the balance right I suppose.
But on the long run, the structures are in place and things are looking BRIGHT !!!
Hope I get to eat some humble pie next year…
November 24th, 2009 at 4:02 pm
Grant10, the other SA S14 teams except the Lions are also just as professional as the Bulls. Their structures are in place. They might not be as successful as the Bulls but that is because the Bulls have better players than the other teams and they win matches when its really necessary, the crucial ones. I will say this, the Bulls has the best BMT of all the SA teams.
November 24th, 2009 at 4:10 pm
@Blouste: Sorry but I hope you do not have to eat humble pie
But I will buy you the pie if you have to
November 24th, 2009 at 5:37 pm
DAMN IT MAN!!!! DAMN IT!!!
ANOTHER 10 YRS OF BULLS DOMINATION I CAN SEE, I HATE THIS BLOODY TEAM BUT I MUST ADMIT THEY KNOW HOW TO RUN THEIR SHOW…AND BY GOD…DON’T THEY RUN IT WELL!
I HOPE MY BELOVED WP COULD LEARN FROM THIS.
IT’S REALLY SAD THAT THE TEAM EVERY ONE HATES THE MOST DO THE BEST PLANNING AND GET THE BEST GUYS FOR THE JOB.
CONGRATS MEYER, I RATE YOU BUT I DON’T LIKE YOUR TEAM.
I ALSO HAVE IT FROM GOOD SOURCES THAT MEYER IS STILL VERY POPULAR ALSO, SO THAT’S A BONUS.
ALL I WANNA KNOW NOW IS MEYER LUDEKE’S NEW BOSS??
November 24th, 2009 at 5:38 pm
@grant10: I AGREE 100% WITH YOUR COMMENT GRANT.
November 24th, 2009 at 5:40 pm
BULLS NEED A QUALITY NR.3 … BUT WHO THE HELL WANNA LIVE UP THERE IN PTA. THEY WOULD HONESTLY HAVE TO PAY ME X3 WHAT I EARN NOW TO MOVE THERE.
November 24th, 2009 at 5:44 pm
@Ned: BJ Botha coming back. Problem solved.
November 24th, 2009 at 5:50 pm
The S14 beker is leaving Pta along with Habana.
I backed the bulls to win it this year, but sharks and WP going to do better next year.
November 24th, 2009 at 5:58 pm
@cab: Cabbooo! I’m coming to Paris tomorrow!
November 24th, 2009 at 6:03 pm
@robdylan: Can you hold a note, sing national anthems?
There’s money to be made in France.
November 24th, 2009 at 6:08 pm
@Kronung: hey – I can do both! I can even sing the Kiwi one, sort of.
November 25th, 2009 at 1:02 am
@Dantalian: there was no acrmimonious split – he resigned as he (reasonably) expected to be the Bok coach. Only to be shafted by SARU (surprise surprise). I would DEARLY love to see Heyneke as the chairman/president of SARU. Then we might see some real development in this sport of ours.
November 25th, 2009 at 3:24 am
Just Like their scrum half and their fly half so too are their Dor and head coach heavily overrated. These oke’s think they basically walk on water, well let them try it and see how quick they sink like everybody else.
November 25th, 2009 at 10:01 am
overrated?
what a frikken lunatic
November 25th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
@skopskiet: errrrr.. Sink like everbody else? Nah, they can cling onto their Super 14 and Currie Cup trophies to keep them afloat.
