Wallabies ease past Blues

The Wallabies broke their 101-year losing streak against the Cardiff Blues with a 31-3 victory in the midweek clash on Tuesday night.

The Blues have beaten the Wallabies in all previous six encounters dating back to 1908. However, there would be no upset this year as the Wallabies proved to be too strong for the home side with fullback James O’Connor, Kurtley Beale (playing out of position on the wing), flank Matt Hodgson and hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau impressing for the visitors.

Former All Blacks fullback Ben Blair gave Cardiff the early lead as he slotted a penalty in the opening minutes, but it was all Wallabies from then on.

Within two minutes after Blair’s three-pointer, the Wallabies were up 7-3 after Ryan Cross scored in the corner and O’Connor claimed the extras.

The Wallabies then scored another 10 points before half-time as Beale crossed the chalk and O’Connor kicked five points through a penalty and conversion.

Cardiff came out after the break with a better defensive performance, but the home side could only restrict the Wallabies until the 77th minute.

The visitors scored two more tries in the dying moments via Beale and replacement Luke Morahan, while O’Connor kept a 100% record with the boot as he kicked over both conversions.
