Matfield baffled
30 Nov 2009
Victor Matfield says he was shocked to discover that Ireland could understand their lineout calls in Afrikaans.
In the disappointing 15-10 defeat at Croke Park, Ireland had the unexpected upper hand in the lineouts. The Boks normally reign supreme in the air battle, but to Matfield’s suprise, they were countered by their Irish counterparts.
Matfield believes former Boks assistant coach and now Ireland forwards coach Gert Smal played a major role in this.
‘It was a bad day for us,’ said Matfield. ‘After the second lineout, we discovered that Gert (Smal) had to have given the Irish some Afrikaans lessons, because they could read the calls.
‘Gert knows our lineouts very well, but we thought that we could get away from that with Afrikaans calls. We tried to change things thereafter, which did not work either. In the second half, it went slightly better, but this was the worst lineout contest I have ever had in my life.’
Matfield added that they will need to modify their lineout work after last Saturday’s experience.
‘Our own ball was shocking. There is nothing that we can say, but it does not happen everyday. We will have to ascertain where things went wrong,’ he said.

@Tacitus: No we lost because when the tactical kicking was not working, we kept doing it.
We lost because we did not keep them guessing. We did not vary our play at all.
I dont think the language was an issue- it was teh fact that they knew the calls. The English speaking countries all callin English – no problem.
If teh Boks have not varied their lineout calls sinc eGerts time, then they are seriously dumb.
Perhaps they should use lineout calls like
“Bakkiessemasehulleisalmaldooseendiebalgaannouvirdielangslapdrolmetdiehoetnougaandertiensesensovoorts”
I want to see what the Irish make of that…they would probably just hear “Bakkies”
Of course it would not work against Vickerman…

Gotta love it when the little weezels come crawling out of the woodwork to throw some mud in glee.
The AB’s ended the season well and good on them. We played the good rugger when it counted and the trophies were on offer, like the S14 and T 3. Klapped the AB’s 3 times makes a reasonable season. Does the silly cup on offer at the French game count?? Not really hey?
Come to think of it we play the good rugger more often than not when it counts, like at the WC. Can’t say that about the AB’s …….
To be fair, I would not get all excited about giving the frogs a smack cause we all know they can’t string two good games together. They played their seasons big one against the Boks and were flat for the next. Typical. They have done it consistently for years.
So, maybe ya plonkers need to get a life??
