Benjamin dropped for bad mouth

Ryno Benjamin was excluded from the Springbok Sevens team for using foul language.

Benjamin was withdrawn from the George event for disciplinary reasons on Thursday, and coach Paul Treu revealed the reason why.

‘He used foul language against me and at some members of the management team and the senior players heard it,’ said Treu. ‘This is something we as a team have addressed and the important thing now is for us a team to move forward.

‘This why we have someone here like Gavin Swanepoel [life coach], who is with the squad to assist with any situation like this. If there are any players who need assistance and help, we have the people here to assist our players.’

Meanwhile, the Boks face Fiji in the Cup quarter-final at 14:57 on Saturday in a repeat of last week’s Dubai quarter. The Boks beat Zimbabwe 29-5 and drew with Kenya 12-all in their second and third matches on Friday, but Kenya finished first in their group due to points difference.

Drawing with Kenya … man. I know Kenya have improved, but you’d expect better. Hope they pull something out of the bag against Fiji.

Ryno Benjamin you have let the team down. You have let your supporters down. Ryno my favourite player too. One of our very best 7′s players. Now get your discipline back. Hope Ryno has learned by his mistake. The team needs him.

Good on you Paul Treu, Don’t take that nonense. Paul Treu a true gentleman and a great coach.

  • 12.Heavens Game: Reply to this comment

@kaksioek: Kenya are a very, very good side. They can and have beaten all the big guns in 7s including Fiji, SA, NZ.

They are on the verge of getting consistency too. These “upsets” like Russia vs Aus will be more common due to 7s being an Olympic sport.

In the next few years I’d say watch the likes of Russia, China, USA who have great Olympic programs.

Funnily enough Kenya has a great Olympic legacy too – they will only get better.

I’m sorry, I can’t take 7s seriously if Benjamin is one of the “star” players in the team. Yuck

  • 14.Puma: Reply to this comment

@Heavens Game: Agree. Remember Kenya has some brilliant runners. They are among the best runners in the world at any distance.

In 7′s speed is very important. Skill too but if you have the speed you can win many of these games.

Feel good to see Kenya doing well.

  • 15.Heavens Game: Reply to this comment

@Puma: Yeah – more middle distance – but those middle distance runners still run fast and sustain it.

It is good – Zim also has some speedsters, I saw a try from a highlights package of their winger just blowing away the Fijians last week.

The Boks are very good too – they seem to have a good balance but their defense seems to lapse too often.

  • 16.Puma: Reply to this comment

@Heavens Game: 15 – Yes last year the blitz bokke defence was superb. We do have many new players. So maybe with more time together they will get better. We have some speedsters in our side too.

The Kenyans yes, are fast from the 10km up to the marathon. Then even in those distances you have to have speed training. Kenyans are tall too which helps in this game. They are just born to run. This is the game for them and feel really good they are doing well. Proud of our African brothers up north.

Never saw the Zim game so cant say.

@Puma: Kenya play with a great style of rugby and the way they play with a good spirit wins them a lot of fans.

Kenya seems to be everyones second best team i.e. after their country.

  • 18.Robzim: Reply to this comment

Kenya is predominantly good at the middle and longer distances but also won a bronze in the 4 X400m relay at the Olympics in 1968 and followed it up with a gold in the same number during 72.

  • 19.Heavens Game: Reply to this comment

@Robzim: We all know they have an athletic legacy – 7s is the perfect code for them. Olympic time 2016, I reckon they are going to be formidable.

I watched a documentary on the training regime for their runners, at altitude – quite hardcore. If that rubs off on their 7s side and more people start playing the game…

Boks played poorly against Kenia, even when we were behind there was no urgency, would stand for 15 seconds deciding who we were gonna pass the penalty to.

Treu desrved the indignity for picking a felon such as Benjamin

Rose and Benjamin to appear in court
Tuesday, September 09 Print Golden Lions
rugby players Earl Rose and Ryno Benjamin will appear in the Randburg magistrates court today on alleged drug dealing charges.

The two Lions players will appear in the dock alongside two other co-accused in charges relating to their arrest on 31 January of this year.

Rose and Benjamin were arrested in January after being found in a flat in Fontainebleau, Randburg which contained a significant amount of illegal substances.

The amount of drugs found in the flat has prompted the state to prosecute the players on intent to deal charges.

A Golden Lions representative claimed that the drugs had been “planted”.

“We are aware of the charges against them. But according to our own lawyers’ investigation into the case, the drugs were planted on the players,” GLRU chief executive Manie Reyneke told the Beeld newspaper on Monday.

“We are convinced the case against them won’t continue.” he said.

    With thanks to the Beeld.

“Treu desrved the indignity for picking a felon such as Benjamin” (Hondo, p53)

    felon (plural felons)

    1. A person convicted of a felony. (Wiki)

I don’t think that Benjamin was convicted of the charges brought against him, Hondo.

But as we know, you are not going to allow facts to stand in your way if you have an opportunity to denigrate certain kind of players, are you?

    @nama1:
    Call it the education gap
Those players NO LONGER represent their country, they are private individuals, Benjamin persumably represents SA while there is a drug trafficking case against him?
Have you discussed the difference in the local sheben?

  • 67.nama1: Reply to this comment

Fact of the matter is that he has not been convicted of any crime and therefore cannot be called a “felon”

January will appear in court on January 22, I think.

What are you implying? That every time a person of colour is acquitted in a court of law, it is because of his colour?
