Collins rates Ricky

Stand-in Ospreys captain Jerry Collins says Ricky Januarie showed his class in the recent 62-7 hammering of Viadana.

Januarie is on a three-month loan to the Welsh club with the hope that he will rediscover some form. Injuries to the frontline scrumhalves meant he was rushed into the weekend’s fixture, but he didn’t let his team-mates down.

‘He was good, he pretty much got off the plane and had to play. That’s a tough ask for any player,’ Collins told the Western Mail. ‘He was pretty much playing blindfolded.

‘But we stressed up front all week that to make his job easier we had to just play, get the ball on the front foot and deliver it. Ricky has been around a long time, he knows how to play and we are pleased to have him. A player of his calibre knows what’s expected of him and what needs to be done.

‘We didn’t want to complicate things for him and he was happy to get a try in his first game.’

Januarie battled to nail down a starting spot towards the end of the 2009 Super 14, and Dewald Duvenhage continued to keep him on the bench during the back end of the Currie Cup. Januarie also missed the end-of-year tour with national coach Peter de Villiers offering the explanation: ‘I already know what I have in Ricky.’

After the win over Viadana, Januarie said he’s glad to be back on the park.

‘In my time with the Ospreys I will be playing rugby, which is important. I haven’t played for five weeks and my last game was the Currie Cup semi-final.

‘Playing for three months for the Ospreys is going to be good for me, it will help me to get back into fitness.’

@Papoose: Was January in form this year? Read my earlier comment about Ricky. Some people keep on kicking John Smit, FdP, Schalk Burger….. All good, cream will rise to the top. Nothing to do with race. Read my comment regarding Mapoe.

    no doubt he’s a talent
    huge potential
it was too early for him to earn his cap when we have such quality in the wings
my distaste has nothing to with him as a person but moreso how quickly other talents get the “quota” tag as soon as the shoe is on the other foot

let me 1st say Julius is nt my best friend hehehe

the vitriol brandished to ricky is truely undeserved and unwarranted. yes he lost form, lets nt be so fickle, MOM performance when we trounced England 08! same with Pienaar.

they are talents tht offer an alternative to the current crop and we have the lierty to change the gameplan with those type of players

i’ll preach this till the chickens come home to roost. we dont value enough having different styles of players on the bench so we make tactical substitutions and nt timing substitutions.

Mallet was one of the few who got it right. thts y i’ll always wish those 2 a speedy recovery to form and nt kick them while they’re down!!!

@Papoose: hougaard earn his first cap as a super quota! Everyone is aware of that, after the royal **** up he single handedly engineered against saracens he gets patted on the back with a CAP!!! Even frans ludeke was probably flummoxed by that one, cos he dropped the palooka & shifted him around the backline in the currie cup!

  • 55.Johan Fourie: Reply to this comment

@Papoose: But that is not completely accurate Papoose. Many “white” players endure the same. Wynand for one. He really plays well at the Bulls, but struggle with the Boks. That is why he isn’t the 1st choice. Morne Steyn was the best 10 in the Tri-Nations and S14, yet people critisize him for being one dimentional. Fact is the Bulls scored more tries with him at 10 than with any other flyhalf. Remember, the guys are instructed to play a certain game plan.
If someone is off form, like January was this year, he should be dropped. Same goes for Schalk Burger. Brussouw is in the seat, Burger must now either outplay him or Juan Smith. Jacques Fourie is in the seat (like Jacobs was last year), now AD must outplay him.
Colour of skin plays NO role in my mind when selecting players.

  • 56.Johan Fourie: Reply to this comment

@Papoose: Agree on that. But their is a big difference between kicking a player and stating the facts. Both Ricky and AD have the ability to come back, no doubt. Lets hope they do, because we need them to. We need 30 players capable of playing in a WC Final.

  • 57.Johan Fourie: Reply to this comment

@Transformation: Stop with this “quota” thing please. It is so yesteryear. The reason Ludeke moved Hougaard around was because FdP and Heini Adams are the 2 1st choise 9′s.
Point is, Hougaard didn’t pick himself, PdV did. Can you blame Hougaard for having a poor tour? No, he was moved around in the backline, and he is still young. How would any younster perform in the same situation? It was a wrong decision to play him in the eoyt.

What is WO’s weaknesses, Mr Rugby Analyst.

  • 59.Johan Fourie: Reply to this comment

    @nama1: May I answer that?
He isn’t the most creative player
He tends to hold on to the ball too long
He tends to step inside to much(defences knows this)

    @nama1: His strengths are:
    Strong defence
    High workrate
    Good finisher
    Wins many turnovers

So what is Adi’s strengths, if any?

  • 62.Johan Fourie: Reply to this comment

    @nama1: Many.
    Good finisher
    Reads the game well
    Good finisher
    Brilliant in broken play

  • 63.Johan Fourie: Reply to this comment

@nama1: One question? Why do you always defend “coloured” players, but never “white” players? If I’m wrong and I missed you defending them, I apologise.

  • 64.SpringbokSarah: Reply to this comment

good grief again with the colour story, I swear you never learn

@Johan Fourie: you’re right JF “quota” is so last year but when you have mark keohane writing articles saying that the selection of raubenheimer, maku & chiliboy should bring shame to all black people in this country, you are a unique species. Should meisiekind or jaco vd westhuizen’s selection brought shame to all white people is this country?

  • 66.Johan Fourie: Reply to this comment

@SpringbokSarah: Sorry about that. New here. Just noticed a few things. Seems to me there are certain lines drwan on this blog. Not here to talk politics, just rugby. Just wish the players could cover their bodies in clothing so that no one can see whether they are white, black or coloured. Wear AFL helmets? LOL!

You are wrong and your apology is accepted.

When a person like Hondo spread his poison about certain players (coincidently mostly players of colour) somebody has to challenge him, that’s all.

@Johan Fourie: watch Invictus. Be colorblind.

(which is 1 of the songs in Invictus)

  • 70.Johan Fourie: Reply to this comment

@Pearl Rose: No. The players didn’t pick themselves. Players should be selected on merit, and merit only. And I always thought Keo was an advocate for change? I just dont think that 2 wrongs make a right. It becomes a visious circle.

@SpringbokSarah: Oh ok! Will go see it. In the past I’ve always been disappointed with “sport movies”. Never looks real, especially if you know the sport and have seen the real thing. But lets see!

@SpringbokSarah: I watched the 95 Final at the Fountains in Pretoria with suppliers for the company I worked for. The power went of just before the start of extra time, so we all ran out to our cars to listen on the radio. It came back on just before Stransky’s drop. The trip home to Randburg was unbelievable! Fortunatly I taped the game.

When have you seen me do the same as him?

You say that you are new here. Maybe you should wait a little longer before making statements like that. I guarantee you, you can’t for a minute compare me with Hondo.

  • 78.SpringbokSarah: Reply to this comment

@Johan Fourie: I suppose so… but there’s a lot of heart tugging moments. It’s a feel good film… and believe it or not I was so bloody nervous when they were playing the final… even though I knew what was gonna happen

  • 79.Johan Fourie: Reply to this comment

@nama1: Sometimes it is easier for someone on the outside to notice things. By “challenging” him you do the same. Instead of argueing a players performance/ability/value, you attack other players. It is for that reason that I compare you to anyone from the “other side”.

@SpringbokSarah: Sarah, Do they get the South African accents right?

Most of those American movies they make of SA never get our accent right. I just cringe when they try to speak with our accent.

Blood Diamond our friends that live in the States said the SA accents were perfect in that and actually it was not. LdC only got it sometimes.

Anyhow still going to see the movie on Wednesday. Believe the rugby scenes are not realistic. But will just take it as it comes.

  • 83.Puma: Reply to this comment

@Puma: 82 – Think the SA that have lived in the States for a long time have forgotten what our accent sounds like.

@Puma: Untill we watch a video of Casper de Vries!

  • 85.SpringbokSarah: Reply to this comment

@Puma: THEY DID! I was really happy with the accents… Morgan’s Afrikaans is lacking… but Mr Mandela’s accent is even harder so we can forgive him for that. It was nothing like Leo’s which was insulting.

  • 89.Puma: Reply to this comment

    @Johan Fourie: Yip..hehe.

Going to see Invictus on Wednesday. Just hear that the rugby scenes are not realistic. So that will be kinda off putting a bit. Heard that all the players look so short even the forwards……. Why did Eastwood not select some rugby players here to play in that movie? Would have been more realistic the rugby part. Then not sure how much the rugby part plays. Think it is more about Nelson Mandela.

Freeman looks so much like him so hope he plays the part well.

@grant10: Me too and that is my birthday. Getting old now Grant……hehehe. Years flying by like crazy.

  • 91.Johan Fourie: Reply to this comment

@Puma: You are right. It looks a bit silly on the podium with Madiba being taller than Francois. Sean Fitzpatrick should have played in the movie, he is a GREAT actor! LOL!

  • 92.SpringbokSarah: Reply to this comment

@grant10: what do you mean off season? Stormers have been training… they only get a break from Friday

@Puma: don’t think about relating it to size, but rather about to what was going on in S.A, the emotions that were in the air, how horrible the Springboks were, and how they were able to defy the odds and become the world champions.

AND THAT’S WHY WE ALL NEED TO SUPPORT BAFANA

  • 93.Puma: Reply to this comment

@SpringbokSarah: Okay so the accents then are a bit better than Leo’s. Then it will be a bit better.

Still just want to see it for what it is really about that era.

Loved that world cup. Was awesome. Only just came back to this country, been back about 6 months so I was emotional about the whole thing. Actually brings back some beautiful memories. I watched it with my brother that passed away in 2003. Sort of will always remember him too that day. So it sure will bring back some awesome memories.

@Johan Fourie: Fitzie……hehe. You are 100% correct there. What a player though. Got under our skin but he was one of NZ great captains.

Will always remember that jumbo going over the stadium. Damn that was awesome.

  • 96.Puma: Reply to this comment

@SpringbokSarah: Sarah, You see that is nonsense. Boks were not that horrible at the time. That I think is where Eastwood got it a bit wrong. We were not the favourites but were never a bad team as I have read they make us out to be and only winning on emotion. We won it fair and square. Our defence was outstanding that day. We matched the ABs the whole way. We were probably the first team they played that was up to them. The other teams they just knocked over easy until they got to play us.

  • 97.Johan Fourie: Reply to this comment

@Puma: Ja, what a day that was! Actually, what a month that was! From the opening game against Australia, to Dalton’s and Hendrik’s bans, that almost French try in the semi, the hype about Lomu, Jouba’s oxygen tank episode…. And then the climax in the final!

@Johan Fourie: Johan, It was a fabulous time. I loved every minute of it. Watched the opening game while on holiday in the Berg. Remember we all watched in a big hall……hahaha. No tv’s in the bedrooms that time….hehe. But it was great watching as they had a huge fire going, winter had started and the Berg gets really cold that time of year.

Loved the whole vibe around the country. Was awesome.

@SpringbokSarah: Sarah, We will all support Bafana. I know I will but really don’t see them making it past the first round. Football is played by so many countries and so many coming here are way better than us. We just have to enjoy the moment while our team is still in. If they make the 2nd round for me that will be enough to make me proud of them.
