Ulster hang on to hope

Ulster gave themselves a chance of qualifying for the European Cup quarter-final with a 21-13 victory Edinburgh at Ravenhill in the European Cup.

The Irish side move into second position in Pool 4 and will hope that Stade Francias, who top the Pool, fall to Bath on Saturday.

Ulster’s Springbok tighthead prop BJ Botha was superb by all accounts, scrummaging strongly and displaying a relentless work ethic around the park.

Issac Boss and Darren Cave scored tries and Ian Humphreys kicked eight points for Ulster, with Niall O’Connor adding a penalty. Edinburgh replied with a Jim Thompson try and eight points from the boot of Chris Paterson.

In the other match on Friday, Glasgow effectively sent The Dragons crashing out of contention for a quarter-final place by beating the Welsh side 29-25.

Glasgow led 24-19 at the break, and despite a spirited comeback The Dragons never looked like upsetting their hosts in the second half.

The victory takes the Scottish side into second on position in Pool 2 on nine points. However, they are nine points adrift of Biarritz, who have played one game less.
