Cheetahs to maintain scrum strength

Wian du Preez believes the Cheetahs’ scrum can still dominate under the new scrum interpretations.

After the Cheetahs’ warm-up session last Friday, assistant coach Hawies Fourie expressed his concern at the teams being frequently penalised at the breakdown and scrums because of the new law interpretations, designed to clean up those facets of play, implemented this season.

This was also evident in the Stormers/Sharks warm-up match last Friday, as both teams were penalised on several occasions in the first quarter alone – making it difficult for the sides to get continuity in their play.

Du Preez, who has been given the week off after returning from a brief stint with Irish side Munster, believes this can be an advantage, rather than a setback.

‘After speaking to [referee] Jaco Peyper, I understand the officials want to steer away from resetting the scrums on more than one occasion,’ Du Preez told keo.co.za. ‘This will allow the game to flow better and means the strongest scrums will dominate.

‘This is the system they are using in the northern hemisphere, and from my experience playing with Munster, the strongest scrums are awarded the penalty.’

The Cheetahs are regarded as the strongest scrummaging unit in South Africa, and while Du Preez said they will have to refine aspects of scrumming, he still believes they can continue their dominance.

‘I still have to speak to [scrum coach] Os du Randt about the changes we have to make, but I believe he has been working the guys hard during training,’ said Du Preez. ‘With my experience playing according to similar laws in the European Cup I believe I can give the guys valuable input this season.’

With the new breakdown law interpretation, players like openside flank Heinrich Brussow could come under increased scrutiny from referees. However, Du Preez said the Cheetahs’ loose forwards are working on a fresh strategy.

‘Heinrich is a brilliant player and he had a fantastic season last year, so the spotlight will definitely be on him,’ said Du Preez. ‘But we are revising the new law interpretation and working out a strategy which will help us to adapt.’

Beast doesn’t deserve to be dropped especially for someone who hardly played any competitive rugby in 2009! Are you that stupid?

@grant10: Watch the game. You suggested Carstens is a better TH than JS. This is simply ridiculous. Infact watch the whole 1st test again. It seems our scrum had more than parity against one of the scrumming powerhouses.

Cheers guys, got to go, Id love to stay an chat, but i feel arguing with people who believe the Beast has been dropped by the Sharks for Jannie and who should also be dropped from the springboks for a player injured most of last year and that Deon Carstens is a better TH than Smit is finally making me stupid.
