Chiefs brace for barmy Durbs

Keo.co.za brings you the latest news from New Zealand.

Chiefs brace for barmy Durbs

Chiefs coach Ian Foster says his team needs to adapt to the humid conditions if they hope to beat the Sharks.

Foster’s charges will play the Hurricanes this Friday in Rotorua before departing for their South African tour on Sunday. The coach said Friday’s fixture will be a good opportunity for his players ahead of a testing time in the sweltering city of Durban.

‘Friday’s match will see us trying some new things as well as getting the players prepared for hot playing conditions – something we will be facing in South Africa next week,’ said Foster.

Chiefs – 15 Mike Delany, 14 Jason Hona, 13 Richard Kahui, 12 Jackson Willison, 11 Sitiveni Sivivatu, 10 Stephen Donald, 9 Brendon Leonard, 8 Sione Lauaki (c), 7 Tanerau Latimer, 6 Liam Messam, 5 Kevin O’Neill, 4 Craig Clarke, 3 James McGougan, 2 Aled de Malmanche, 1 Sona Taumalolo.
Subs: Ben Afeaki, Nathan White, Toby Smith, , Hika Elliot, Romana Graham, Culum Retallick, Jarrad Hoeata, Luke Braid, Jack Lam, Junior Poluleuligaga, Callum Bruce, Tim Nanai-Williams, Dwayne Sweeney.

Woodcock to tackle Saders

Tony Woodcock will make his first appearance for the Blues when they face the Crusaders on Thursday.

Blues coach Pat Lam has named a strong team including an All Blacks front row in Woodcock, Keven Mealamu and John Afoa. Filo Paulo will fill in for Ali Williams at lock as the No 5 is out for the season with an Achilles injury.

Formers Hurricanes pair Alby Mathewson and Daniel Kirkpatrick will start at halfback.

Blues – 15 Paul Williams, 14 Rene Ranger, 13 Isaia Toeava, 12 Benson Stanley, 11 Joe Rokocoko, 10 Daniel Kirkpatrick, 9 Alby Mathewson, 8 Viliami Ma’afu, 7 Serge Lilo, 6 Jerome Kaino, 5 Filo Paulo, 4 Kurtis Haiu, 3 John Afoa, 2 Keven Mealamu (c), 1 Tony Woodcock.
Subs: 16 Tom McCartney, 17 Tevita Mailau, 18 Peter Saili, 19 Tom Chamberlain, 20 Chris Smylie, 21 Stephen Brett, 22 Rudi Wulf.

McCaw lauds law tweaks

While South African teams have struggled to adapt to the new breakdown law interpretations, Crusaders skipper Richie McCaw sounded optimistic about the changes.

With the law interpretations now favouring the attacking side more at the breakdown, McCaw believes this will make defending teams more disciplined and accurate in contesting for possession.

‘I think if the refs all do exactly what they say they are going to do, and do it for the whole competition. It will be good. It will reward players that are 100% accurate,’ McCaw told stuff.co.nz, adding that the opportunities for turnovers might even improve if the referees could remain consistent.

McCaw also believes that the law interpretations will not favour any of the New Zealand, Australian or South African sides more than the other as every team will be working hard to adapt.

‘You have seen over the last few years that rugby has gone in swings where if it’s defence-orientated. Everyone figures ways of getting around that and your attack takes over,’ said McCaw.

‘I think there will be a lot of emphasis on getting the breakdown right this year so that you can actually play and it will be interesting to see which team makes the best of it.’

@grant10: Well i’ll give you that, he is much better at 2 than at three, probably less tired as well, but we were going backwards even after smittie got subbed, so not to sure what the sharks stand to do unless we get bj back, and then there is the bismarck problem, cant leave him out….i’d say vs weaker scrums put smit at TH and against stronger teams use him at hooker and sub him after 60 min.

  • 207.bananaboy: Reply to this comment

G10 don’t forget that Kiwis like BP will try and pull the wool over your eyes. They can’t wait to see the back of a captain that took the 3N’s off them and beat the B&I Lions.

    @gunther:

Smit has not got the technical nous to play TH , why can you not accept that ??

He is a jelly fish (yes another name)at 3 !!!

Why are you happy to see the Bok scrum being smashed, stuff this that there are few scrums in a match , **** man, your scrum needs to at least maintain parity, if not you play off the back foot all game , I want my TH to do his primary function first and foremost, being effective in the loose is a bonus!!!

We have said at nauseam that Smit is a great captain and a very good 2, why just not let him rotae with Bissy ?? what’s the problem ?? Bissy ego going to gett hurt ??

But to accept a demolishing at scrum time for the Boks is something I will not do !!!

Now the likes of Ostrichman and Ratel and yourself will say , the sharks were the best scrumming side in teh S14, that we beat thhe BIL with that front row, well since the CC semi and on the EOYT something has gone very wrong and all fingers point to Smits inabilities as a technically sound TH , for goodness sake I and other bloggers are not blind we see what we see, TH’s are born not made …..never will be !!!

Why so defensive of the obvious ????

Id like to think I wielded anything like that much power. Sadly I am just 1 of many hopeless rugby obsessives with nothing more than an opinion. And, in fact, Im far more damning about my own teams and players.

Beating the Lions ? maybe thats something to cheer about in SA….

@grant10: Nah, he played a lot at 12 too. suspect defence, Wynand made he look very silly in the CC last year at Loftus..

Nah, if you want a 12 then De Jongh is streaks ahead of Newman, he just needs to learn to pass – too selfish imo. Des Fountain is a good player too, we need him back from injury

Nah, just passing an opinion. As an AB fan Im absolutely delighted to see Smit continue. Im a huge fan of Bismarck as a player, so the more he becomes disgruntled and marginalised whilst seeing his best playing days the better. And I remember very well the Buck Shelford-Gary Whetton transition years which lead to reigning-RWC ABs being dumped in 1991.

    @FireStraeuli:

this is true. To think 3-0 vs the Blacks and with neutral refs too !

Lets see how 2010 works out. Personally when ranking rugbys greatest rivals, I dont notch up RWCs or TriNs. Thats just modern waffle. The only thing that counts betw SA vs NZ is (1) Away Series wins – currently 1-1 and (2) Head-to-Head (since 1992/isolation).

In 2010 the Boks have 2 Tests in NZ, lets see if they can nick another Away Series.

That de Jongh looks tasty. Runs lines of a 13 tho, not a 12. But, as you say, a 13 MUST learn to pass. I havent seen enough of him to know, but he was easy on the eye on EOYT’09.

@Black Panther: ‘easy on the eye’, ‘looks tasty’….now I know why you were so insulted by the NZ women comments, you are one!
