Paarl rely on talented pivot
Gavin Hauptfleish will spearhead Paarl Boys’ challenge this season.
The flyhalf is one of three players in the 2010 squad who represented the 1st XV last year, along with flankers JC Jooste and Byers de Villiers. Hauptfleish has the rare ability to dictate a game with his boot, while using his attacking skills to carve defences to shreds. He will play alongside SA Academy centre Heinrich Arendse, who has just joined the school.
Paarl Boys’ head coach Elmo Wolfaard will once again be assisted by Mike Bayley, the former Bulls assistant coach who is involved with the school as a consultant, while ex-Boland and Bulls front ranker Andries Human will assist Richard Visagie with the pack.
‘Our preparations have been of a high quality, so we are feeling confident ahead of the new season,’ Wolfaard told keo.co.za. ‘Last year we lost only two games – to Boland Landbou [23-19] and Grey Bloem [50-8] – but we are striving to do even better in 2010.’
Paarl Boys’ kick off their season at the St Johns Easter Festival in early April where they will face stern opposition in Helpmekaar, Hoërskool Nelspruit and Jeppe Boys’ High. Their biggest game of the year will be at home against Grey College on 8 May.

I’m sure they’ll have plenty more talented players too. They always do.

Good to see school boy rugby featuring in the media. I have always had a keen interest in rugby between the “big” schools!
Think this Gavin can make the WP Craven Week side this year…

Losing only 2 games is one thing, and depending who you played, could be a source of pride – but 50-8 is a royal whipping!

Well they beat Monnas last year and if I remember correctly Monnas took all the trophies in Gauteng! LOL!! I think
Paul Roos also beat Monnas. The schools up North must come play some rugby in the Cape, keep an eye on the Easter Festivals and you will see the Cape schools kick Gauteng a##…….again! LOL!!!!

Small correction…Their biggest game in the year have always been and will always be Paarl Gim. Grey College is also a big game, but not THE ONE!..

Bergie, sorry to burst your bubble but both Paarl Boys and Paul Roos lost to Affies last year.

FYI – Paarl Boys’ High was rated the number 2 rugby school in SA last year (after Grey Bloem)

Wow, that’s quite a coaching team they have pulled together for a school team. Sounds like they are still taking the game too seriously.
