Lauaki’s law troubles continue
10 Mar 2010
Sione Lauaki has been charged with assault after an incident at a bar in Hamilton last Friday.
The Chiefs confirmed this in a statement on Wednesday. ‘In regards to Sione Lauaki, the outcome of last week’s incident investigated by police has resulted in a charge of assault being laid today.
‘The Chiefs and Sione will not be making any comment until after this matter has been through the court process. Lauaki will also be taking part in NZRU and Chiefs disciplinary processes.’
Lauaki has just finished his two-week suspension for a high tackle against the Lions, but head coach Ian Foster will leave the No 8 out of his match 22 who will face the Crusaders on Friday.
‘Sione and I have decided that in light of the week that he has had, that the right thing to do is not play him in this game. We will fully support Sione over the next few weeks,’ said Foster.
This is not the first time Lauaki has been in trouble with the law. Last year he was charged with damaging a motel in Auckland. In 2006, he assaulted a security guard and punched a rival player outside a bar.

@Hondo: I doubt its steroids Hondo, I mean hes never had a pulmonary embolism like Spies… a finely tuned athlete having one at such an early age is very suspect..
is Spies condition hereditary? who knows, but Im sure the NZRFU have random drug testing, just like SARU…
and we arent known like SA for producing synthetic drugs in our backyard.. or illegally importing them like SA from countries like India..
easy to cast aspersions isnt it?

10 Mar 2010, 11:07 am
@poppa69: Aspesions or not, it’s just another islander who can’t handle his drink. Not a great rugby player, overrated, and very few will miss him. Bit like Troy Flavell …

@CharlieBrown: Check out ‘Once were warriors’ at the dvd store…explains everything… especially that short-man syndrome..!

@Storm outta hell: Um to be honest and before we start hurling generalisations around, I have met my fair share of Saffas who are just as bad at holding their booze!

10 Mar 2010, 12:06 pm
@Atrides: Aint that the truth!!!
10 Mar 2010, 12:32 pm
Lets face it – New Zelanders seem to have a real problem with the booze. Drunk driving incidents, assault after assault, damaged property etc etc the list is endless. Boredom from living on such a small island perhaps? I dont know. What I do know is you never see anyhting about the South African players going around brugling and beating people up.
Need to have a long hard look at whats happening in society there. Somethinhg is obviously very wrong. Violence seems to be endemic within the bar culture.
10 Mar 2010, 13:37 pm
lol.
Are you people serious???? He was in a bar fight. So what???? He’s not the prime minister of his country or a church elderly. He is a rugby player who was involved in a bar fight. The “victim” was a grown man who lost and petulantly ran to tell. As for our very own Boks: I know a couple who have been involved in their fair share of bar fights. Danie. Ricky. Butch. Juan. Schalkie. Earl.

Self Distruction…I blame the Chiefs for not teaching their employees life skills.
10 Mar 2010, 14:25 pm
Lauki is a thug. Waste of talent.
10 Mar 2010, 17:23 pm
Geez ok so NZ have alcohol problems – what about SA. Joost has a *** problem, Januarie was caught for drinking under the influence, Pedrie Wanneburg admitted to drugs, Schalk is Schalk, Earl Rose is not a saint – always in the papers for some thing or other – assult, drugs scandal, touch rugby scandal, Ryno Benjamin was also in the news for drugs, Joost was also in the news for a bar fight in Stellenbosch a few seasons ago, then you had James Small also a baddy, James Dalton also a thug, so SA Rugby also have problems. Their club rugby is in disarray with players being assulted by spectators and the refs, a player was killed on the field etc etc. So don’t start by saying NZ players are thugs, there is a few baddies in all countries.

Rose linked to touch-rugby punch-up
Posted by Morné – 18/12/08 at 07:12 am under Disciplinary
First drug allegations, incidents late at night at hotel lobbies, alleged beatings outside nightclubs… Now a punch up at a touch rugby tournament? What’s up with Early Rose?
Rugby365
SA Rugby has declined to comment on reports that Springbok Earl Rose was involved in a mass punch-up at a touch-rugby tournament in his home town, Strand, on Tuesday.
Rose, who was a surprise inclusion in the Bok team for the year-end tour to the United Kingdom last month and is a member of Johannesburg-based Lions, played for a team called Jamaicans in the annual Strand touch-rugby event.
Jamaicans is a team entered by Rose and also included his younger brother Jody, who also plays professional rugby for the Lions. They compete in the Strand event every year when they return home during their annual holiday.
According to local media reports Earl Rose took exception to remarks made by another spectator to his father, Enver, after the two were involved in a scuffle.
The incident, at the end of a match between Jamaicans and a team called ‘Dwergies’ (Midgets), was one of at least two major punch-ups that caused organisers to bring a premature halt to proceedings.
However, SA Rugby declined to comment on the involvement of the Springbok star in the fracas.
“The incident has not been reported to SA Rugby and we are unaware of the full facts, and are therefore in no position to comment,” Andy Colquhoun, Strategic Communications Manager at SA Rugby, told rugby365.com on Wednesday.
According to a report in the Afrikaans daily, Die Burger, Earl Rose got involved during the altercation between his father, Enver, and another spectator.
“Earl punched the guy seven/eight times. His [the spectator's] face was a bloodied mess,” the newspaper reported.
According to the report Rose’s sister also got involved in the fracas.
The fighting, which was preceded by other incidents, got out of hand, as spectators became involved.
The organiser of the event, Grahame Bobrow, said he regretted the incident – the first time since the tournament’s inception eight years ago that something like this has happened.

@Green Goblin: Januarie caught drinking under the influence??? hahahahah nice one. Now I never thought that would be a punishable offence.
Fair play Sa has its issues like any country. It just seems to be a more regular occurence down under and often a bit more than a few handbag swings.
10 Mar 2010, 18:01 pm
Slumtown – typo error – my apologies lol. Driving under the influence
It just boggels the mind that grown men can ***** like females on a blog over who drinks more – who does more drugs than the other – who screws around more. Each country has it bad boys but I think here it is worse. I think Oz has more rugby players in the bad books than SA and NZ combined.
10 Mar 2010, 18:05 pm
@Green Goblin: well fair to say theres a drinking problem in all 3 countries and certain issues with being macho and random bar violence. However saying that I think most countries around the world can attest to drinking problems. The Uk is one of the worst for example.
But I do think pro sports people should at the very least be aware of the fact they cant act like teenagers anymore. Especially if youre representing your country.
10 Mar 2010, 18:07 pm
I agree Slumtown but you know I blame the players themselves because they think they are bigger than the game – they think they become untouchable and in some ways it is true because their unions protect them. If they do drugs ban then, if they drink and end up in bar fights ban them from rugby for a year – maybe then they will start cleaning up their acts. They are definitely not role models to the youngsters.
10 Mar 2010, 18:15 pm
cmon guys, you or I can go into a pub and drink in anonymity, where if trouble does start its usually not an everyday occurance… these boys all have targets on their back as soon as they walk in the door, always someone out there who wants to give it to a player or “take him on”…
10 Mar 2010, 18:16 pm
plus the media as soon as they get a whiff they are all over it…
10 Mar 2010, 18:19 pm
Poppa69 yes that is true but then you get those seriel offenders that think they are bigger and start the fight first. James Dalton was one of those players – he is in the news again. Then you get those players who walk into a bar and someone tries to fight they just walk away – I think it is the player himself that needs to look at himself. You get the John Smits, Daniel Carters etc but never a whiff of bad news.
10 Mar 2010, 18:34 pm
@Green Goblin: agreed, ultimately its up to the player…
10 Mar 2010, 19:05 pm
And some players think they are untouchable and then you get players that get away with it because their clubs/unions protect them. Why not ban the first offender for two games and seriel offenders for a year – they might learn the hard way.
Have your say
