Into week 3
Hi there everyone, Im sitting here in Manly at our hotel and week 3 is upon us. We leave by bus for Canberra tomorrow to play the Brumbies and Im sure you are all aware of how much we need a win. Last weekend was hard for us but so to have been the previous 3 weeks. For me to sit here and write about reasons and excuses for our Waratah loss would be futile, if we want results we need to control our own destiny, keep 15 men on the field and score from opportunities we create. That being said I am happy we made good progress last week and played a game far better suited to the players we have. With this we can grow and return the pride this great franchise deserves.
As hard as the losing is for a team, this one we have has a great group of guys in it who enjoy each others company, even though the so called experts seem to think we have a rift in the camp but I suppose a lack of rugby knowledge would lead to such an assumption! Our coach, Plum, as distressed as any coach would be has been brilliant in his management of the poor start so far and these valuable yet difficult lessons learnt so far will stand him in good stead when the Sharks start to dominate again.
We head out tomorrow and have had a good stay here in Manly over the last 10 days, we split into 4 groups last night for a team dinner outing and by 9-30pm were all in the hotel lobby having a coffee together. Its amazing that of the 4 groups 3 opted for pizza and only 1 group headed for the popular Ribs and Rumps!!! It has to be said that a few of the big boys might have tucked into a second pizza but rest assured I wasn’t one of them!!!
Anyway, Im out of here, we have our off day today and the boys are resting up nicely. We are going to head to the cinema later to try see the Oscar winning Hurtlocker. We saw Blind side a few weeks ago and reckon the Beast needs to go play a little NFL!!! All the best to everyone out there and a big thank you for all the positive support you have given on the site and Twitter, much appreciated

Johannesburg – Springbok No 8 Pierre Spies has cautioned against high expectations for the Vodacom Bulls this weekend in their Vodacom Super 14 match against the Highlanders.
Much is expected from the defending champions as they return from a weekend off to face the New Zealand side, especially after the Highlanders lost 33-0 to the Stormers last weekend, but Spies, now fit again after injury kept him out of the Waratahs game, was erring on the cautious side.
The reason is simple. Last year, in Dunedin, the Bulls arrived full of confidence after dismantling the Hurricanes in Wellington a week earlier, and met a physical and intense Highlanders side that hit them hard. The Bulls lost 36-12 that day, and Spies remembers it well.
So much so that much of the team talk this week is about not letting the standards slip, and making sure a repeat of last year’s performance doesn’t happen again, especially with the Highlanders sure to come out firing to make up for their poor performance in Cape Town.
“We have to make up for last year,” Spies said, “In Dunedin; they really came at us last year and gave us a good beating. This year we will take some aspects out of the Stormers game and their other two games and concentrate on making sure we play our best rugby this week.
“The Stormers played really well against them, but we expect the Highlanders to be a lot better this week once they get to Loftus.” Spies admits while it is nice to be on top of the log after four rounds, there are still a number of weeks ahead in the competition, with the Bulls still not close to where they want to be in this competition.
“We’ve had a good three weeks, but technically we can improve a lot, especially in the standards we want to reach as a team. We set very high standards for ourselves and while the results have been good for us so far, we want to attain the standards we set for ourselves,” he explained.
“The fact that we are conceding so many points is not a good sign for us; luckily we have scored a lot as well. It is definitely something we’re working on – it doesn’t help to score fifty but to let in so many on the other side. It is a focus point for us, to tighten up the defence but to continue scoring on attack.”
As for the injury, Spies smiles when he says he is “itching to play again” but concedes there is a bigger picture at play.
“Any rest is always good in a tough competition like this and for me the break came at a very good time. I’m really itching to get onto the field again and can’t wait,” he adds.
“It’s nice that we’re still on top, but it can change so quickly, so we need to keep out momentum and ensure we win our home games while we are here to give ourselves that advantage. Anything we can do to make the team win is all that matters.”

Johannesburg – The return of Springbok loose forwards Pierre Spies and Dewald Potgieter to the starting line-up for Saturday’s Super 14 rugby match against the Highlanders at Loftus Versfeld is the main selection news from the Blue Bulls camp.
Spies comes in for Danie Rossouw who moves to lock in place of Flip van der Merwe who drops to the bench.
On the other flank Derick Kuun is retained ahead of Deon Stegmann. “This is in accordance with our squad system and the agreement with players,” said Bulls coach Frans Ludeke at the team announcement on Wednesday.
“Every one of the players has been playing good rugby. The squad system is working well and all the players understand it.”
Ludeke has selected Stegmann and another loose forward, Pedrie Wannenburg, on the bench. He views the breakdown play of the Highlanders as one of their strong points for which he has made provision with the inclusion of the two additional loose forwards in a bench that boasts five forwards.
Prop Bees Roux was originally selected as one of the replacements but cut his eye against the scrumming machine on Wednesday morning. He is replaced on the bench by Rossouw de Klerk, who moves up from the Vodacom Cup side.
The versatility of wing Francois Hougaard who can cover at scrumhalf and the two backs on the bench, Jacques-Louis Potgieter and Jaco van der Westhuyzen who can cover the positions of flyhalf and centre in the case of Potgieter and fullback and flyhalf in the case of Van der Westhuyzen has made more backs on the bench an unnecessary luxury.
Springbok scrumhalf Heini Adams will therefore play for the Vodacom Blue Bulls in what could be a crunch match against the Golden Lions in Johannesburg on Saturday.
The Bulls team is: Zane Kirchner, Gerhard van den Heever, Stephan Dippenaar, Wynand Olivier, Francois Hougaard, Morne Steyn, Fourie du Preez, Pierre Spies, Dewald Potgieter, Derick Kuun, Victor Matfield (capt.), Danie Rossouw, Werner Kruger, Gary Botha, Grthro Steenkamp.
Substitutes: Bandise Maku, Rossouw de Klerk, Flip van der Merwe, Deon Stegmann, Pedrie Wannenburg, Jacques-Louis Potgieter, Jaco van der Westhuyzen.
10 Mar 2010, 15:14 pm
@Blouste: I think this is wise and mature speak from Spies. A more cynical person would say this exhibits a lack of confidence amongst the Bulls but it shows they’re not taking anything for granted. I can see the Bulls giving the Landers a snotklap of note.

Copy and paste day at the office?

There’s someone missing from the Waratahs team sheet. Their player 23 – Paul Marks and player 24 – Matt Goddard.
11 Mar 2010, 07:56 am
Carlos back in the starting line-up……. What is Dickie thinking? For all the King’s know-how, surely the development of Burton should be top-priority, the mind boggles.

The biggest problem for the bulls is complacency and after reading what spies said i hopr their heads are firmly on the ground because complacency has ruined many a teams past results so go bulls and do what kzn king shark has suggested give the highlanders a lekker snotklap.

Spies says “last year in Dunedin…….” we got spanked SO badly we forgot we were in Palmerston North !
11 Mar 2010, 12:28 pm
@Black Panther: mate, lots of fans here already given the game to the Bulls… 80 minutes before the final whistle even blows…
11 Mar 2010, 15:48 pm
@poppa69:
Luckily you/fans/people on this blog don`t decide if the Bulls will win or loose this weekend. The players themselves make that call. So a few over excited/arrogant supporters don’t bother me at all. The Bulls stay humble and down to earth , just as Spies has said…. And they are looking forward for revence.
But I silently believe the Bulls will thrash them this weekend…

Revence = Revenge
