From the schools: Grey College

Grey College will kick off their season on Monday when they play Harmony Sports School from Virginia.

Harmony are well-known for their running rugby and will provide a big challenge for the boys from Bloemfontein.

Players like William Small-Smith, Johan Goosen, Niel Jordaan and Henco Venter will form the core of the Grey team as they all played for the 1st XV last year.

The coaching staff will use this game to finalise their team that will be participating in the Kearsney College Easter Festival, and build some early momentum ahead of a tough season.

‘A good first game always builds confidence and shows whether pre-season training has been successful,’ said coach Roelf Meyer. ‘There is healthy competition among the boys, and they all want to boost their chances of playing for the 1st XV in 2010.’

Grey College: 15 Niel Marais, 14 Ruwellyn Isbell, 13 William Small-Smith, 12 Jan Serfontein, 11 JJ de Klerk, 10 Johan Goosen, 9 Kevin Luiters, 8 Niel Jordaan, 7 Tyron Schultz, 6 Henco Greyling, 5 Cobus Nel, 4 Gerhard Olivier, 3 Rudolph Botha, 2 Armand Stoman, 1 Rudi Fuls. Subs: 16 Anrich Bitzi, 17 Neethling Fouche, 18 Henco Venter, 19 Leneve Damens, 20 Nicol Linde, 21 Paul Jordaan, 22 Inus Keyser

Two boys named Henco in the same side.

    What are the odds?

I’ve seen thes boys play at o/16 level 2 years ago in Paarl. William Small-Smith and Rudi Fuls are awsome youngsters. Hope the Bulls scouts are wide awake!

Some useless info. The number 9 and number 7 both from Stirling Primary in East London, and I think both of them were at Selborne College for U14 year, and then onto Grey Bloem. Tyron was, not sure about Kevin, but probably also. Grey Bloem does have a wonderful feeder system…

Saw game live. Harmony is an Under19 side and should be applauded as a developement “school” Some great rugby played on a very heavy thick field. Grey used all 22 players and there were moments of brilliance.
Jordaan and Goosen just back from knee ops – and looked good.
