Chargers clout Chennai

Herschelle Gibbs helped the Deccan Chargers to a comfortable 31-run win over hosts Chennai Super Kings.

The strength of the Kings’ bowling attack was shown by an out-of-form Albie Morkel opening the bowling, and he was clouted for 41 in his four overs. Chargers captain Adam Gilchrist batted typically for his 38 off 17 balls, and from there Gibbs and Andrew Symonds put on a 95-run partnership.

Gibbs was composed on his way to 45 off 36 before he was run out as last year’s winners reached 190 off their 20 overs.

In their chase, the Super Kings had already lost five wickets after the first 10 overs. Chaminda Vaas was again the main danger with ball in hand as he claimed three wickets in his opening spell.

At 32-4 Chennai already needed well over 10 an over, but Justin Kemp (22) and MS Dhoni restored their chase before the Cobras captain was stumped. Dhoni looked dangerous for his 42, but with the run-rate constantly climbing, the pressure eventually told as he was bowled by Symonds.

Morkel was left stranded on 42 not out off 26 balls.

Deccan Chargers 190-4 in 20 overs
Andrew Symonds 50, Herschelle Gibbs 45
Chennai Super Kings 159-9 in 20 overs
Albie Morkel 42*, Chaminda Vaas 3-21
