KES get sweet revenge

KES started their 2010 season with a 28-19 win over Pretoria Boys High on Saturday.

In 2009, KES were one game away from an unbeaten season but lost 13-11 to Boys High in the season’s last fixture. But the former avenged the defeat with a convincing home win last weekend.

Wing Senzo Tshabalala starred for KES as he grabbed a hat-trick. Wing Burt Fraser also crossed the chalk while scrumhalf Ruan van Rensburg added one conversion and flyhalf Kazlo Holtzhausen converted two penalties.

Head coach Carl Spilhaus, however, believes his team can perform better.

‘I’m happy with a winning start to the year but we need to be more clinical,’ Spilhaus told keo.co.za. ‘Our defence was great but we were lacking at times in attack. We could have scored more points if we had taken our opportunities.’

Spilhaus added that KES should improve as the season progresses.

‘We are an inexperienced 1st XV squad. We only have three players over from last year [Holtzhausen, flank Christian Kazadi and centre Lonwabo Ntleki]. But the boys should get better with more experience.’

KES’ next two outings will be against Jeppe away on Wednesday (17 March) and St Alban’s at home the week after (24 March).

The travel probably hampered the Pretoria side.

I heard the Kes team arrived 15 minutes late for the game. Pretoria was waiting on the field for 15 min before the KES team decide to grace them with their presence.

Kes team has to spend the whole summer in the gym and on supplements just to be on par size wise with Boys High or any Large Afrikaans school.

March fixtures are always a bit of a lottery to be honest.

Lol! It was probably 5 minutes that felt like 15 minutes. There is often bagpipes and fanfare that delay things.

Glad this rivalry is still going strong! PBHS are always a great test and I think its sensational to have them first game up of the season! Will be interesting to see how these two teams progress before playing each other again in the final game of the season.

to be really honest pbhs were average at best and the late try brought some respctability to the scoreline however it must be said that pbhs are a tough school and hopefully they can come to the party next time

Interestingly, KES won 17 of the 24 gams played on the day, including 1sts – 4ths, and all the A and B games. Can’t remember that ever happening in my day! Could well just be first match of the season rustiness from Boys High – looking forwad to the end of year re-match.
