Double blow for Cheetahs

Lock David de Villiers has been ruled out with a serious shoulder injury while fullback Riaan Viljoen has been suspended.

Assistant coach Hawies Fourie confirmed De Villiers picked up the injury during a forwards contact session at training on Tuesday.

‘It’s very serious and it looks like he will have to undergo surgery tomorrow [Wednesday],’ Fourie told keo.co.za. ‘The doctors weren’t able to determine how long it will be but I think he could be out for a long while.

‘That’s why we have brought in [forwards coach] Barend Pieterse to provide lock cover on the bench against the Stormers.’

Pieterse hasn’t played for the Cheetahs since his retirement in 2008 but is confident he’ll be able to cope against the Stormers this Saturday.

‘I am match fit. I’ve played three Vodacom Cup games for Free State: two 60-minute ones and one full match,’ Pieterse also told this site.

‘I know one can’t compare Vodacom Cup level to Super 14 level and it will be a challenge against an in-form Stormers side, but the only way I can get experience and make the comeback is to play Super 14 games.

‘I was only expected to make a return in the Currie Cup, but [head coach] Naka Drotske said he has the confidence in me. I will still help the forwards with the lineouts as assistant coach.’

Meanwhile, Viljoen has been suspended for the trip to Newlands after breaking team protocol.

‘I can’t reveal what exactly he did wrong, but it is a very serious matter,’ Fourie said. ‘He will be left out of the squad this week and play for the Griquas Vodacom Cup side.

‘We will discuss this matter with him on Monday. If he is to come back into the team, he will have to sort himself out.’

What is it with these Cheetahs players and their lack of discipline?? First Lionel Cronje and now Viljoen…

bloody hell, just when they looked to get their season on track and playing some decent rugby you have an unneeded injury and indescretion of the field. C’mon Cheetahs, get it together!

@wpw: When tend to sell those with discipline problems to other unions, the Lionels and Jannies of this world – need a fullback?

Why the do these reporters always say “confirmed with this site” instead of just confirmed.

De Jongh and Mapoe have Springbok written all over them far more so than lily white pansy boys like Gerhard Van Den Heever whether color coded fools are capable to realize it or not.

    @skopskiet:

    Racist.

Last time I checked each team needs two wings and two centres.

It’s not an either or situation.

I didn’t like Viljoen’s celebration after his try against the sharks. It was enough to put me off for good. He can stay in the vodacom cup for all i care.

@skopskiet: yes but the injury to de jongh indicates he has bad karma….. so I would be loath to get him in the bok squad for fear of his bad karma rubbing off on the other boks
