Deccan down Chennai
10 Apr 2010
The Deccan Chargers choked the Chennai Super Kings, walking to the required 139 to win with five balls remaining.
Deccan’s chase was a formality, Chennai’s meagre 138-8 presenting little challenge to the 2009 champions. Tirumalasetti Suman and Andrew Symonds once again starred with the willow for Deccan – the former hitting four fours and two sixes to reach 55, whilst Symonds struck an unbeatten 27 [from 18] to finish off the chase at 139-4.
Earlier Deccan, who have the least expensive early overs in the IPL, conceded an out of character 55 from the first six to gift Chennai a good start. Momentum shifted with the loss of Matthew Hayden [19], then Murali Vijay [23]. From 65 for 2 in 7.2 overs Chennai withdrew into their shells, racking up 74 for 2 at the 10th, with Symonds and Pragyan Ojha smothering the Super Kings with stump-to-stump bowling on the slow track.
Despite Suresh Raina’s improvisation, Deccan held Chennai to a 38-ball boundary drought. Raina’s solitary resistance ended at 52 with the team at 122, and the tail were unable to provide the final push towards a respectable total, scoring only 26 in the final five. Ryan Harris topped a disciplined bowling performance with two wickets in the final over to finish with 3 scalps.
The total, requiring only seven per over to overcome, would never be enough. The result ends a three match winning streak for the Chennai Super Kings and marks the third consecutive victory for the Deccan Chargers, further congesting the IPL points table.
