Bangalore blow it

Deccan Chargers’ bowling attack reduced the Royal Challengers Bangalore to 138 all out, falling 13 runs short of Deccan’s modest 151-6.

The match belonged to the bowlers: Dale Steyn removing Adam Gilchrist and the in-form Tirumalasetti Suman in the space of two balls, then Gibbs an over later to put Deccan on the back-foot early.

The Chargers spent the remainder of their 20 overs recovering, eventually achieving 151-6, with contributions from Rohit Sharma [51] and Monish Mishra [41] the only highlights of a mediocre display.

Conversely, Rahul Dravid gave Bangalore some impetus from the outset [subsequent to Ryan Harris' first ball dismissal of Manish Pandey] and together with a sluggish Jacques Kallis looked to put the Royal Challengers into a match winning position. The pair reached 74 before Dravid fell for 49 [from 35] in the 11th over, and at 74-2, with Kallis and Robin Uthappa staring down a very gettable Deccan total on a quick outfield, one felt the visitors had the game all but wrapped up.

But after Kallis fell three overs later for 27 [from 37], Bangalore fell from 95-3 to 110-6 midway through the seventeenth. Bangalore failed to adjust to the longer boundaries at Nagpur and frequently pursued the aerial route with disastrous consequence. Even the willow-work of Uthappa, the only mainstay throughout Banglore’s mid-innings collapse, could not resurrect the stumbling guests.

Each bowler performed for Deccan, culminating in a rounded attack the majority of which conceded six or less per over. All took wickets, Harris, RP Singh, IPL leading wicket-taker Pragyan Ojha and Harmeet Singh taking two apiece.

The win keeps Deccan’s hopes of a semifinal berth alive, moving them to fifth on the IPL points table, whilst delaying the confirmation of Banglore’s place for another week.

Deccan 151-6 (20 overs)
Rohit Sharma 51, Monish Mishra 41, Dale Steyn 3-18
Bangalore 138-10 (19.4 overs)
Rahul Dravid 49, Robin Uthappa 34, RP Singh 2-21
Deccan win by 13 runs
