Sharma shines for Deccan
16 Apr 2010
Rohit Sharma’s unbeaten 68 steered the Chargers to a five-wicket win over the Kings XI Punjab.
Deccan won the toss and elected to field, but opener Mahela Jayawardene steered his side to an impressive total of 174 on a bouncy wicket. Jayawardene stroked a classy 93* off 62 balls, and alongside fellow Sri Lankan Kumar Sangakarra (52), they were the backbone of the innings.
In the chase, the Charges were cruising as they required 55 off 42, but two wickets fell in quick succession. Leg-spinner Piyush Chawla claimed T Suman, while Rusty Theron claimed the big wicket of Andrew Symonds when he sent his off stump cartwheeling out the ground.
But Sharma kept his wicket and while he was striking at 178, the victory was never in doubt.
Theron went for 18 off his first two overs, but recovered well and went for 32 in four and was the best of Punjab’s bowlers.
The win means Deccan are within reach of the semis and still have a chance of defending their title.
