Deccan charge into semis
18 Apr 2010
Deccan qualified for the IPL semi-final with an 11-run win over the Delhi Daredevils.
Even a late surge from Paul Collingwood couldn’t rescue the situation for Dehli, who have only themselves to blame for defeat.
Their talented top four of David Warner, Virender Sehwag, Gautum Gabhir and Tillakaratne Dilshan contributed just 28 runs collectively. It took an applied 29-run stand between Mithun Manhas and Collingwood to steady the innings, and later some superb stroke play from the Englishman, and measured batting from Ashish Nehra, to get Dehli close to the 146 they needed for victory.
Earlier, Andrew Symonds’s brutal onslaught of 54 scored off 30 deliveries that included five sixes, helped guide Deccan to a defendable score on a slow wicket. The Australian asserted himself from the outset, and was particularly aggressive towards Amit Mishra and Dilshan.
However, their innings slowed to a crawl post his dismissal, but their seemingly unimposing total proved to be sufficient to book them a spot in the play-offs.
Deccan 145/7 (20 overs)
Andrew Symonds 54, Umesh Yadav 2-24
Delhi 134/7 (20 overs)
Paul Collingwood 51*, Pragjan Ojha 2-16
Deccan won by 11 runs
