Chennai dethrone Punjab
18 Apr 2010
The Chennai Super Kings edged the Kings XI Punjab by six wickets with two balls remaining.
D Jayawardene fell in the third over after firing 21 off eight balls but Shaun Marsh and Kumar Sangakkara steadied the innings with a 56-run partnership.
After Yuraj Singh was dismissed cheaply, Marsh and Irfan Pathan saw the Kings XI to 192-3 with an aggressive approach. Marsh top-scored with 88* off 57 balls while Pathan powered 44* off 27 balls.
The Super Kings had a poor start to their chase as they lost openers Matthew Hayden and M Vijay within four overs. However, Chennai’s middle order of Suresh Raina (46), S Badrinath (53) and skipper MS Dohni 54* clinched the win in the last over.
Proteas all-rounder Albie Morkel supported Dohni at the death with 14 off eight balls. The win secures Chennai a semi-final place.
