Kumble cleans up
24 Apr 2010
Anil Kumble led the Royal Challengers Bangalore with 4-16 as they dismissed the Deccan Chargers for 82, the lowest innings total of the season.
The Deccan Chargers crawled to 82, with nine batsmen scoring less than five runs, in a head in hands display of capitulation. Conversely Bangalore gave the clash a touch of respectability with a polished all-round performance.
Kumble, opening the bowling, was supported by great variations in a tight spell from Praveen Kumar, who himself picked up the early scalps of Monish Mishra and Rohit Sharma for figures of 2-18 from 4.
For the second consecutive match Andrew Symonds fell under the weight of resurrecting a lost cause – his dismissal left Deccan scrambling at 27 for 4 in 6.1 overs. Only Anirudh Singh [40 from 39] and Venugopal Rao [24 from 27] showed any application at the crease, saving Deccan from complete humiliation with a 43 run stand.
When Singh fell in the 16th over to Jacques Kallis, taking the team total to 78-6, Deccan’s chances of reaching three figures slipped from slim to none. From there it was a quick slide into embarrassment for Deccan, losing their last four wickets without a change to the scoreboard. Shockingly, extras was the joint fourth top Deccan run scorer on the night with 4.
Rahul Dravid and Kallis got Bangalore off to a solid start, before the South African all rounder punched a Rahul Sharma length delivery back to the bowler. This would be Deccan’s only celebration of the innings, perhaps the match, as Dravid was joined at the crease by Kevin Pieterson. The two closed out the match, strolling to 86-1 and scoring 35* [from 30] and 29* [from 21] respectively.
The nine wicket win ensures Bangalore’s qualification for the next Champions League.
