Mallett mixes it up

Nick Mallett has made 10 changes to his run-on side for Italy’s second Test against the Springboks this Saturday.

The starting line-up includes three changes in the backline. In the pack, there is a new second row. Skipper Sergio Parisse is also supported by two new flanks while loosehead prop Salvatore Perugini is the only survivour in the front row from the Test in Witbank last weekend.

Wing Michele Sepe, outside centre Gonzalo Canale and scrumhalf Simon Picone are selected ahead of Kiwi-born Kaine Robertson, Matteo Pratichetti and Tito Tebaldi respectively. This sees Andrea Masi move to inside centre while Pratichetti and Tebaldi drop to the bench.

Flankers Manoa Vosawai and Paul Derbyshire are promoted to the starting line-up, which sees Alessandro Zanni relegated to the reserves and Simone Favaro falls out of the match 22.

Locks Carlo del Fava, who was born in Umtata, and Marco Bortolami start in a new-look second row. Quintin Geldenhuys, who also comes from South Africa, drops to the wood.

Hooker Fabio Ongaro gets the No 2 jersey from Leonardo Ghiraldini while tighthead Lorenzo Cittadini replaces the injured Martin Castrogiovanni.

Italy – 15 Luke McLean, 14 Michele Sepe, 13 Gonzalo Canale, 12 Andrea Masi, 11 Mirco Bergamasco, 10 Craig Gower, 9 Simon Picone, 8 Sergio Parisse (c), 7 Manoa Vosawai, 6 Paul Derbyshire, 5 Marco Bortolami, 4 Carlo del Fava, 3 Lorenzo Cittadini, 2 Fabio Ongaro, 1 Salvatore Perugini.
Subs: 16 Leonardo Ghiraldini, 17 Franco Sbaraglini, 18 Quintin Geldenhuys, 19 Alessandro Zanni, 20 Tito Tebaldi, 21 Riccardo Bocchino, 22 Matteo Pratichetti.

Nothing game, nothing test, nothing gained, nothing learned. Enjoy the rubbish down in EP with your massive rent a crowd.

@logie_Jumpbuck(logie_Jumpbuck)-1: Scotland are ahead of Wales in recent ranking I think, after they beat Argies at home twice!

I can’t see how making 10 changes will benefit Italian rugby.

Where does this fit into strategic planning?

Mallett needs to build a strong(er) starting XV by giving the established players more experience against top-quality opposition.

They should have build on where they’ve left off last week.

@Oubaas2009(Oubaas2009)-6: still don’t think they will be able to beat wales on a regular basis….

@logie_Jumpbuck(logie_Jumpbuck)-5: Well that would pose a perplexing debate really wouldn’t it? Is an idiot capable of knowing they are an idiot? Surely some self reflection and analysis would rule out being a complete idiot. Partially impaired perhaps would be better perhaps, to describe one who knows they are less than average.

    ;-)

    Still a nothing test match

@willievz(willievz)-7: Mallett said at the start of the “tour” that he would give everyone of the touring party an opportunity to play against the Boks. According to him it will be a big honour for everybody to play against the world champions. I agree with you though.@goyougoodthing2(goyougoodthing2)-4: My bad!

@willievz(willievz)-7: Due to the small player base (Italy rugby has the same no. of players as WP rugby) nearly all the Italian players are experienced.

The team doesn’t look significantly weaker from my perspective, Zanni the only real big gun they could do with starting with a real drop in class to his replacement.

Testing their depth! …..nothing test, waste of money! SARU could have ploughed the players money into transformation and development!

Paul Derbyshire – good solid Italian name. So too, Luke McLean and Craig Gower. Hahaha

@Big Hit(Big Hit)-11: Point taken from an individual perspective, but how experienced as a combo are they?

Also, how often do you get to play against the World Champions as a combo twice in two weeks?

I thought they did well on Saturday to stifle the Bok-momentum, and they should have picked-up their journey this Saturday.

Before anyone takes their efforts on the world stage serious, the Italian team themselves need to make a mental switch – to do everything in their power to give themselves the best competitive edge possible.

Actually Kings vs The British Lions was the second most attended match in the Lions history …. ppl are hungry for some good rugby … just don’t bring Earl – worst player in rugby history

Eish Nick Mallet…… such a good coach but I can’t see why he’s doing this. Boks should REALLY get over 50 now surely. Weak even for an Italian side

  • 17.WilleBul: Reply to this comment

The Italians should get Leon Schuster to play for them – This is a comedy anyway…he might just make the team and get permanently drafted

@WilleBul(williebre)-17: Lol, Schuster did play provincial rugby.

Also a moviestar hooker in Sweet & Short, one of the all-time classics :)

    Et

It’s unreal. New world order in football?

Although to be fair they were both old creaky teams.

  • 24.gunther: Reply to this comment

Please man Italians cry if the hair stylist takes an inch too much off their hair.

To me though it looks like some of the big guns in the tourney have been a bit conservative in their tactics.

I think the Kiwis need to be congratulated for not losing a game either. France and Italy have really taken a hammering by South African teams in the last week.

    @David(David)-27:

Thought the Kiwis were excellently, brilliant in defence again today against a good S. American team.
Doesn,t matter whether they are All Blacks or All Whites. Something for S.A. to learn there.

    fantastic for all whites.

poofball’s going gain in popularity in nz now.

pi’s aren’t any good at it.

therefore, all blacks will become (officially now) the ssiixv

@charo(charo)-29: Charo, Yip well done to NZ in the world cup. Actually they were hard done by against Italy. Really never thought that was a penalty against NZ. If Italy never got that penalty which they should never have, NZ would have been through to the last 16. So they have done really well.

Huge upsets in this world cup. Italy and France out. We will have another top soccer team out in the last 16. Germany or England to win one has to go out there. Pity two top teams have to meet so early in the tourney.

South American teams are doing the business in SA. Arg looking the best so far. Not that I know that much about soccer but from what I know think they are the best so far.

Pity NZ didn’t get through to the 2nd round, would’ve had Japan and then possibly the Portugal/Chile winner in the Qtrs.

@Cheetah Champs(Cheetha Champs)-13: just some info, Derbyshire is Italian born and raised. Gower is an Italian g/parent qualification and McLean is a 3 yr residency qualifier.

A few press reports I got from the UK over the last few days:

The England football squad visited an orphanage in a South African township this morning. “It’s good to put a smile on the faces of people with no hope, constantly struggling and facing the impossible” said Jamal Umboto, aged 6

All future England football matches have been transferred from Sky Sport to an adult *** channel as the sight of 11 arseholes being hammered for 90 minutes was too explicit for general viewing

“I can’t believe we only managed a draw against a **** team we should have easily beaten. I’m ashamed to be an Algerian”

Now………before Big Hit puts out a contract on my good self. I didn’t write this stuff…………and England have progressed to the next round………..and even in NZ, they have a multitude of support.
