Pumas flay flat France
26 Jun 2010
Argentina smashed France 41-13 in Buenos Aries.
Argentina continued their recent dominance over the Six Nations champions (they’ve won six of their last eight matches) with an impressive and brutally effective performance.
France coach Marc Lievremont had warned they would struggle if they were slow out of the blocks, and that’s exactly what they were, allowing the Pumas to grab the early ascendancy through four Felipe Contepomi penalties.
Juan Martín Fernández Lobbe then struck a decisive blow when he crossed the chalk just before half-time to send his side down the tunnel 19-6 ahead, France scrumhalf Morgan Parra having contributed two penalties to his team’s cause.
The French had clearly been rattled by the physicality of Argentina’s players and failed to make inroads with any of their attacks. They looked every bit a side filled with players who have come off a long and taxing season, while the Pumas were visibly up for it from the kick-off.
Contepomi then added to his points haul nine minutes after the restart with a converted try, but France’s Julien Malzieu provided some resistance. However, wing Pablo Carballo virtually sealed the result with a 60th minute try. Contepomi missed the conversion but at 31-13 the Pumas were cruising to victory.
France’s woes were compounded when Florian Fritz was yellow carded in the 66th minute, and Contepomi duly sunk the resultant penalty to extend the lead. He grabbed a brace soon thereafter to cap a fine performance that saw him score 31 of his side’s points.
