Ryan Kankowski is one of three changes to the Sharks team to play the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein.

Herkie Kruger has dropped out of the squad due to the SA U20 flyhalf’s call-up, with Carlos Spencer promoted to the bench. The Kiwi player/coach will play his first Currie Cup match if used. Doppies la Grange returns from injury, while up front captain Franco van der Merwe is used at lock, with David Bulbring dropping to the bench.

Pienaar to join Ulster early

Ruan Pienaar will leave the Sharks before the Currie Cup ends as his contract with Ulster starts on 1 September.

Pienaar will complete his move to Ravenhill in four weeks after the deal was settled in May. The utility back will be allowed to play in the Springboks’ last Tri-Nations fixture against the Wallabies on 5 September in Bloemfontein, which means he will miss Ulster’s season opener against the Ospreys.

‘We’re delighted to have concluded the contract negotiations around Ruan’s move to Ulster. I would like to thank the Natal Sharks for their help in the matter and for agreeing to Ruan’s early release from his Sharks contract,’ said Ulster operations director David Humphreys.

‘We look forward to welcoming Ruan to Belfast in September, he is without doubt one of the biggest signings made in Ulster Rugby’s history and I’m confident that he will be a key asset to us both on and off the pitch.’

Pienaar, who will join the club’s other new South African recruits Johann Muller and Pedrie Wannenburg, said: ‘I’m very excited about the change – I have been thinking about going to the Northern Hemisphere for a couple of seasons now and when the opportunity to join Ulster came up I was very interested.’

Griquas change two

Wing Rocco Jansen has been dropped while Davon Raubenheimer starts at No8 for Griquas’ clash against the Leopards in Potchefstroom on Friday.

Head coach Dawie Theron has decided to promote wing Richard Lawson ahead of Jansen. Jansen will feature amongst the reserves.

Injury to No 8 Leon Karremaker sees Raubenheimer switch from flank to eighthman. Rohan Kitshoff moves into the starting openside flank position.

Griquas – 15 Riaan Viljoen, 14 Richard Lawson, 13 Wilmaure Louw, 12 Barry Geel, 11 Bjorn Basson , 10 Naas Olivier (c), 9 Sarel Pretorius, 8 Davon Raubenheimer, 7 Wesley Wilkins, 6 Rohan Kitshoff, 5 Cecil Kemp, 4 Frikkie Spies, 3 Jacobie Adriaanse, 2 Ryno Barnes, 1 Steph Roberts.
Subs: 16 Simon Westraadt, 17 Jean Botha, 18 Micheal Passaportis, 19 Gerhard Human, 20 Marnus Hugo, 21 Matthew Rosslee, 22 Rocco Jansen.

    @grant10(grant10)-1:

    Good question
    Surely not at scrumhalf? Charl McLeod has been playing great rugby and we have Kockott off the bench.
    Maybe as backup fly half for Meyer but I cant see it as Plum has always been loathe to play him there.

  • 4.Ratel Brussow: Reply to this comment

    What a ****.

  • 5.Bill Reyts: Reply to this comment

    What a waste of local talent. The Sharks are great at playing guys out of position and then they are lost to SA Rugby. PdV also tried to make the guy a flyhalf against his will.

    Now Terblanche is a centre and I’m sure they will mess around with Lambie as well. This accommodating players is ruining SA rugby.

  • 6.Ratel Brussow: Reply to this comment

    So we have 3 more weeks of the primadonna. I say shove him on the bench, why disrupt the team?

  • 7.Ratel Brussow: Reply to this comment

    @Bill Reyts(Gumboots)-5: Oh shut up, many players have made positional changes and gone on to be hugely successful, Ruan doesn’t have the mental strength to change and is leaving our shores as FdP is about to retire. Frans is a headcase. Too big for his massive boot.

    Agree many have made positional changes – few have excelled.

    Who in SA have made the move and excelled. Frans Steyn is a fullback and was OK at centre – who else? Pienaar was useless at 10, although many thought he was great. Kanko was a joke at 7. Smit the laughing stock of the world at 3. Can go on and on.

  • 11.Ratel Brussow: Reply to this comment

    @Bill Reyts(Gumboots)-8: Spies, Larkham, Beast, De Jonge, Smit (from 3 to 2) and Lomu just to name a few.

    BTW Stormers should buy Frans and Ruan, I think they’d fit in perfectly down in the Cape.

  • 12.Bill Reyts: Reply to this comment

    @Ratel Brussow(Morne Steyn is under-rated)-11:

    Spies – yeah hasn’t had a decent game since he has been found out.

    De Jonge still not tried and tested. Beast average.

    No the Sharks can keep them. Don’t need them in the Cape.

  • 13.Ratel Brussow: Reply to this comment

    @Bill Reyts(Gumboots)-10: SA rugby, 1stly JS was a TH, so he’s a success story genius. Secondly Spies was a wing. Beast was an Eigthman, Frans was a flyhalf. Juan de Jonge was a 13. Can go on and on.

  • 14.Bill Reyts: Reply to this comment

    @Ratel Brussow(Morne Steyn is under-rated)-13:

    Greats we talking not average! Smit always been an average 2 but a good captain. Spies was good on juice but now average – actually below average. Beast is not a great except for the choir boys BEEEEAAAAASSSSSSSTTTTT. De Jonge still to prove himself.

    Take the blinkers off mate.

    @Bill Reyts(Gumboots)-10:

    Dont blame the Sharks for that pal, they had nothing to do with those positional changes.
    In fact, Plumtree has been the only one standing up to Pdiv refusing to play Ruan at 10. Clown.

    You say Terblanche at centre was not Plumtree’s call! Ok didn’t know that?

  • 19.stormersboy: Reply to this comment

    There’s a big difference between a centre switching between 12 & 13, or a fullback swithing between wing and fullback, as you need elements of both positions to be successfull.

    There is a big difference between wing and 8th man, or 9 & 10, so You can’t compare Ruan to Juan, or Pierre to Steyn. It’s obvious that some positions have more in common than others.

    Just as an aside, i thing Ruan can make a great flyhalf, certainly good enough. I wouldn’t go so far as to call him the Tiger Woods of rugby or anything, but he is a good flyhalf, and I think that if he had stayed in SA he could have been at the very least SA’s no 2, alternating with Morne. Plus I think he’d get better the more he played there.

  • 20.John Galt: Reply to this comment

    Hopefully the Sharks team for next years S14

    15 Ludik
    11 JP
    13 Adi
    12 Lambie
    14 Mvovo
    10 JLP
    9 Mcloed
    8 Kanko
    7 Alberts
    6 Deysel
    5 Hargreaves
    4 Sykes
    3 BJ
    2 Bissie
    1 Beast

    16 Burden, 17 Jannie, 18 Skeate, 19 Botes/Daniel, 20 Kockott, 21 Meyer 22 Mapoe

    Tereblanche and Ndungane – outa here.

    @stormersboy(stormersboy)-19:

    Agree with you regarding certain positions. The only real successes are Habanna to wing and Jacques from fullback to centre. Wing an easier position to adapt to though.

    I don’t think Pienaar has the bmt to be a flyhalf – he gets flustered too easily. Just my opinion though.

  • 22.Bill Reyts: Reply to this comment

    @John Galt(John Galt)-20:

    Lambie at 12 – interesting! Actually think he is the next bok 15.

  • 23.Ratel Brussow: Reply to this comment

    @Bill Reyts(Gumboots)-14: The question is would these players have been BETTER in their original position? You’ve answered with your regard for JS at 3, would Beast have been a bok at 8? Would Spies have made it at wing, maybe? Would Frans have been an awesome 10, in my opinion he is a kak 10? The point is maybe these players aren’t considered great (by you!), but the fact is they have gone on to play and at time excel at the highest level in positions they didn’t start out at. What is the problem with that?

  • 24.stormersboy: Reply to this comment

    @stormersboy(stormersboy)-19: Sorry should read there isn’t as much difference between 12 & 13 and 14 & 15 as there is between 11 & 8 or 9 & 10.

  • 25.John Galt: Reply to this comment

    @Bill Reyts(Gumboots)-18:

    Forced change, no other players available at 13. Stroke of genius when you actually consider the inexperience inside and outside him. ie Mvovo and Lambie.
    That being said, I hope he retires gracefully after this years currie cup.

    And before you say it, Lambie is actually a 10, only played fullback in his last year of school. So 12, where he will be much closer to the ball, is ideal for him at this early stage of his carreer. Carter even started his carreer at 12.

    To play FH at the highest level you need talent and ice flowing through your veins in order to make the right decisions at the right time, these days your ability to defend is also a box that needs to be ticked……Ruan ticks the talent box only !!!!

    His fragile mindset will never allow for him to fufill his talent……and no amount of coaching or playing him for any length of time will fix that !!

    Yip, toyed with the idea of botes or daniel at 6 but Deysel, when asked to, is actually damn good at foraging as well.
    He can actually make a proper nuisance of himself when given liscence to do so.

    @Ratel Brussow(Morne Steyn is under-rated)-23:

    The point though: Are there better players than them in that position? Yes there are. Whether they made the Bok team or not is not my argument. We talking success stories. Smit great captain – success story – an average 2 and a very poor 3. Frans at 10 sucks agree with you and if you read my posts earlier I said he is success at 15. Beast is Zimbabwian and an ok 1. Spies is a big boy but has been found out.

    Now there are better players in those positions!

  • 31.David: Reply to this comment

    @John Galt(John Galt)-25:
    That was only because of Mehrton, if my memory’s correct. The ABs seem to have a policy of introducing their next flyhalf at 12 to gain experience before the incumbent retires.
    I presume the reason we struggle is that we also have very few decent 12s.

    @John Galt(John Galt)-25:

    He was chosen at 15 for the Sharks to debut, so at the higher level only seen him perform there. He is pretty good and I hope they don’t move him around, as it will only be a stop gap situation and not help him in higher endevours. Only my point. Not saying I’m right am I.

    @Bill Reyts(Gumboots)-22: Well if you look at the starting side at the 2007 WC final.

    Smit – started as a 3
    CJ – has played both th and lh for boks
    Schalk – has played 8 for boks (like Kanko moving)
    Juan – Started out as a lock/8thman
    Danie – was playing at 8
    Frans – was playing at 12
    Percy – started his international carreer at 13

    Sharks best loose trio for S14 (imo):

    8 – Alberts
    7 – Deysel
    6 – Botes

    Bench – Kanko

    Now what does that tell you about springbok selection?

  • 39.Bill Reyts: Reply to this comment

    @Ratel Brussow(Morne Steyn is under-rated)-38:

    Agree with that loose trio too. Alberts way better than Kanko.

  • 40.Ratel Brussow: Reply to this comment

    @Bill Reyts(Gumboots)-39: When will people realise that Kanko and Spies are great players FROM THE BENCH. When the game opens up, they can do some serious damage. Kind of like Bobby in ’98. What is wrong with being a bench player, Danie has made a career of it and when used properly a bench can swing results.

    bloggers just dont seem to get it.

    There is nothing wrong with players being versatile.

    As long as they are happy to buy in to the changes.

    Ruan made it clear HE DID NOT WANT TO PLAY 10 !

    So why force the oke>??

    No wonder he gets the moer in and walks.

    Look at Ruans comments….he wanted to leave for 2 years now.

    Why?

    Because thats when plonkers tried to force his hand.

    I actually feel sorry in a way for the sharks…..it was the Boks who started this absolute rubbish.

    But fark let me go have some tea….

    I get too the moer oin.

    Ratel….dont forget our bet boet….i havent!
