Lions’ late rally sinks Cheetahs
14 Aug 2010
Two tries in the last five minutes secured the Lions a 30-26 victory over the Cheetahs at Ellis Park.
Elton Jantjies and Jannie Boshoff rescued what looked a lost cause for the Lions, the former putting on an expert all round performance for one so young.
The Cheetahs will lament poor defence in the dying minutes, after resisting well for most of the match. The Lions squandered good scoring opportunities and a more accomplished side would have capitalised on those errors.
The try count reflects that both sides acquitted themselves well enough in defence, but then the attacking play was hardly testing and was marked by a plethora of fundamental errors.
The hosts were the worse in this regard, seeking to play expansively from anywhere on the track. They largely lacked penetration because of their refusal to establish an attacking platform through phase play. This often exposed their ball carriers at the breakdown and offered the Cheetahs chances to slow or turn over possession. What infuriates is that when they did build patiently through phases, as was evident in their tries, they look a very competent side.
The Cheetahs were more structured and controlled the ball better through phases, but their failure to breach the gain line initially meant their possession counted for very little.
Louis Strydom took them into an early lead with three penalties, but that advantage was quickly cut to three points by Lions flyhalf Jantjies’ boot. Jantjies then produced a touch that would have had his backline coach Carlos Spencer smiling, chipping the rushing defensive line to put Deon van Rensburg clean through on goal. He duly converted to give the Lions a 13-9 half-time lead.
The Cheetahs’ response was immediate, Ashley Johnson scoring after a powerful 5m scrum. Strydom converted and added another penalty for a 50th minute 19-13 lead.
The Lions crafted the better chances in the period that followed, none more so than a 12-phase move. It, however, ended with Jano Vermaak spilling a pass forward with the tryline in sight. It summed up the amatuerish errors that continue to undermine the cause of John Mitchell’s side.
Jantjies bank three points, but a Kobus Calso converted try 13 minutes from full time, marked by some poor one-on-one defending, gave the Cheetahs a comfortable 10-point buffer.
But Jantjies set up a tense last five minutes when he converted his own try in the corner, and two minutes later the Lions snatched victory when Jannie Boshoff chased a Michael Killian punt and grabbed a fortuitous bounce to score. Jantjies sent the touchline conversion sailing over and the Lions held on for a rare victory.

Well, in about a year I expect KEO to be the home to heated discussions of Lambie vs Janjies at 10 for the boks.
Oh the debates that we’ll have, quotas, lack of pace, lack of size and so on…
I can’t wait – both quality players!
14 Aug 2010, 17:00 pm
Lucky team, thought they would never win. Cheetahs threw it away, stupid play with 5 mins to go.
14 Aug 2010, 17:02 pm
Well there ouy have it a Lion kills a Cheetah, so the King of the jungle remains the King of the jungle or did the Cheetahs suffer from jet lag?
14 Aug 2010, 17:03 pm
@Doomsayer(www.pollwar.co.za)-3: Jantjies is a quota, finish and klaar
14 Aug 2010, 17:04 pm
@JL1(JL1)-6:
Getting a head start I see…
14 Aug 2010, 17:04 pm
@JL1(JL1)-6: a very good one.
14 Aug 2010, 17:06 pm
Listening to Matthew Pearce and Bobby Skinstad on all matters rugby. YOu would swear that there is ONLY CAPE TOWN. I wonder if they touch each other at half time?
14 Aug 2010, 17:06 pm
@Doomsayer(www.pollwar.co.za)-3: perhaps they can play as a 10/12 combo, still some way off though
14 Aug 2010, 17:08 pm
@Doomsayer(www.pollwar.co.za)-3: Janjies must polish Lambie’s boots before the matches and bring him peeled oranges at half time.
14 Aug 2010, 17:08 pm
no bulls/wp thread?

Jonker: “advantage, advantage, another advantage, penalty advantage, advantage, advantage. Penalty”
Nice

14 Aug 2010, 17:33 pm
Yellow card van den Heever – not for the first time.
14 Aug 2010, 17:34 pm
???? Stormers getting a good hand from the ref and linesmen today… very very one sided
14 Aug 2010, 17:35 pm
@I am a stormer(I am a stormer)-15: Wasn’t a yellow at all… and they shouldn’t even be down that end after a shocking call from the touch judge.
14 Aug 2010, 17:36 pm
@goyougoodthing2(goyougoodthing2)-16: team going forward/with possession/dominating will always be favoured by ref
14 Aug 2010, 17:37 pm
Great try saving tackle Kirshner!!!
14 Aug 2010, 17:37 pm
@jamisz(jamisz)-18: Really? Never. Never knew that…
team going forward with help from the ref will also be favoured by ref… and home town team always gets the nod.
14 Aug 2010, 17:39 pm
Bulle looking decidedly under the kosh
14 Aug 2010, 17:40 pm
duvenhage’s passes are awful at times…he passes to people who aren’t in great positions just for the sake of passing…
14 Aug 2010, 17:40 pm
Nice.
14 Aug 2010, 17:41 pm
Province really struggling to break this Bulls defence , even with Bulls having 1 man sin binned
14 Aug 2010, 17:41 pm
@goyougoodthing2(goyougoodthing2)-20: the most important part of your sentence; team going forward.
14 Aug 2010, 17:42 pm
great defense by bulls
14 Aug 2010, 17:42 pm
Any-one got the score?
14 Aug 2010, 17:42 pm
Bulls look very boring. They look like the Boks actually. And Zane looks 3rd rate, his kicking is awful again as is his positional play.
14 Aug 2010, 17:43 pm
6 – 3 Stormers
14 Aug 2010, 17:43 pm
@WOLFMAN21(WOLFMAN21)-27: 6 – 3 to WP
14 Aug 2010, 17:44 pm
Province will rue the missed chances l8er
14 Aug 2010, 17:45 pm
Shadow back on.
14 Aug 2010, 17:45 pm
g wiz
not even 3 pts from the advantage of extra man?
GvH back on field
14 Aug 2010, 17:45 pm
Whats the run of play like? Which team is looking good?
I expected the WP to win this one with something to spare.
14 Aug 2010, 17:45 pm
@Papoose(papaown)-33: What was the yellow for?
14 Aug 2010, 17:46 pm
@goyougoodthing2(goyougoodthing2)-29: stormers ain’t playing
14 Aug 2010, 17:46 pm
Not good rugby either way. WP should have scored with all the position, the Bulls can’t catch a cold
14 Aug 2010, 17:46 pm
@WOLFMAN21(WOLFMAN21)-35: high tackle
14 Aug 2010, 17:47 pm
@WOLFMAN21(WOLFMAN21)-35: High tackle, hand slipped up, wasn’t intentional.
Stormers camping in Bulls 22 but haven’t score yet. Bulls defense good but nothing on attack.
No one is playing actually
14 Aug 2010, 17:48 pm
@jamisz(jamisz)-38: Thanks man – dubious like all the other yellow cards recently?
14 Aug 2010, 17:49 pm
@WOLFMAN21(WOLFMAN21)-35: high tackle
it was deserved as Bulls made 5 infringements as Province attacked
initially thought Province didnt score cos Bulls were ‘cheating’ but with shadow off and bulls disciplined on defence..no extra points
not good enough
14 Aug 2010, 17:49 pm
@WOLFMAN21(WOLFMAN21)-40: could have gone either way.
14 Aug 2010, 17:49 pm
@goyougoodthing2(goyougoodthing2)-39: Thank you – far closer and far fewer points than I thought it would be.
14 Aug 2010, 17:50 pm
If JLP is going to bring this kind of kicking nonsense to the Sharks he can stay where he is.
14 Aug 2010, 17:50 pm
how come de waal’s not taking drop goal opportunities?
could’ve had extra 6/9 pts and some daylight
14 Aug 2010, 17:51 pm
JLP just tried a drop, missed
imagine if he got it over and the score would’ve been level though province been ‘playing better’
14 Aug 2010, 17:51 pm
“2 very different styles of play” says Bobby… and the same at the Boks… explains a lot.
14 Aug 2010, 17:52 pm
Maku’s made quite an impact since coming on for Botha
good counter rucking there
14 Aug 2010, 17:52 pm
Vermeulen is a BUCK!!!
14 Aug 2010, 17:53 pm
half time
6-3 to Wee Pee
14 Aug 2010, 17:53 pm
Not sure which team is playing ‘better’. Different styles means WP have more possession but Bulls are defending well.
14 Aug 2010, 17:55 pm
@goyougoodthing2(goyougoodthing2)-51: What are the two different styles?
14 Aug 2010, 17:55 pm
@Papoose(papaown)-49: did you see him monster kuun?
14 Aug 2010, 17:56 pm
@jamisz(jamisz)-53: Kuun is a midget to be fair.
14 Aug 2010, 17:56 pm
@goyougoodthing2(goyougoodthing2)-51: yeah but has province’s attack always looked this ineffective this season?
14 Aug 2010, 17:56 pm
Altitude to hamper WP in the second half…
14 Aug 2010, 17:56 pm
@WOLFMAN21(WOLFMAN21)-52: One is a running game, but not implemented too well, losing ball on the deck, not finishing.
The other is kick, chase, defend.
Guess who plays which.
V Boring
14 Aug 2010, 17:57 pm
@WOLFMAN21(WOLFMAN21)-52: province are running most ball. bulls have made 63 tackes. like watching sa vs nz last year.
14 Aug 2010, 17:57 pm
@Senga(Senga)-56: What, the lack thereof?!
They are playing at Newlands!
14 Aug 2010, 17:57 pm
Does anyone know a link to stream the bulls vs province game?
14 Aug 2010, 17:57 pm
@Papoose(papaown)-55: Nope, that’s what I mean… both teams are canceling each other out, the possession stats and territory don’t tell the whole story here.
14 Aug 2010, 17:58 pm
see with 63% possession and 65% territoryProvince should’ve got more points on the board
thats what i respect abt the Bulls
if they’d had those stats, the gap would’ve been bigger
14 Aug 2010, 17:58 pm
@WOLFMAN21(WOLFMAN21)-54: and a wanker.
14 Aug 2010, 17:59 pm
what happened to the swashbuckling blue bulls who were scoring bonus point tries on everyone in the s14?! Is slaptjips still there?
14 Aug 2010, 17:59 pm
@jamisz(jamisz)-63: Province supporter by any chance?!
14 Aug 2010, 17:59 pm
@jamisz(jamisz)-63: Explain wanker..
14 Aug 2010, 18:01 pm
havent even read the article
fell asleep during Lions cheetahs game, now i see Lions won!
how the heck did that happen?
14 Aug 2010, 18:02 pm
@Transformation(Transformation)-64: this is where you give props to stormers management
as disruptive they’re Bok call-ups have been,they’re still producing the goods
14 Aug 2010, 18:03 pm
@Senga(Senga)-66: explain altitude
14 Aug 2010, 18:03 pm
@Papoose(papaown)-67: good coaching?
14 Aug 2010, 18:04 pm
@Papoose(papaown)-67: 2 tries in last 5 minutes
14 Aug 2010, 18:04 pm
2nd half under way
LEKKER PAPPA
14 Aug 2010, 18:04 pm
@jamisz(jamisz)-69: it’s when you’re really high up
14 Aug 2010, 18:05 pm
@Big Hit(Big Hit)-73: read post 56
14 Aug 2010, 18:05 pm
@Big Hit(Big Hit)-70: LOL
i’ll watch the highlights and decide
Lions looked decidedly ordinary during the 1st half
i fell asleep..remember
14 Aug 2010, 18:07 pm
@jamisz(jamisz)-69: please leave him alone, we all know altitude can’t affact wp @ newlands
14 Aug 2010, 18:07 pm
@Transformation(Transformation)-76:
14 Aug 2010, 18:08 pm
potgieter off with injury
14 Aug 2010, 18:08 pm
@Transformation(Transformation)-76: So does rain
14 Aug 2010, 18:08 pm
Come on guys! Someone must know a link to watch the game?
14 Aug 2010, 18:09 pm
@JKBridge(JKBridge)-80: Best I can do is tell you to listen to Radio Sonder Grense (RSG) – radio coverage in Afrikaans.
14 Aug 2010, 18:11 pm
another missed opportunity by province
Pottie is off injured
not good for Boks
14 Aug 2010, 18:11 pm
@WOLFMAN21(WOLFMAN21)-81:
Im listening to it on Radio 2000 website
English
14 Aug 2010, 18:11 pm
@Papoose(papaown)-82: Was it an intercept by Province?
14 Aug 2010, 18:11 pm
@WOLFMAN21(WOLFMAN21)-81: OH NO
cant think of anything worse
14 Aug 2010, 18:12 pm
@JKBridge(JKBridge)-80: big hit is the links man…
14 Aug 2010, 18:12 pm
must say Zane has looked really good today
very safe on defence
very safe under high ball
i know Jantjies is still few months off his best game but Zane is showing him up..so far
14 Aug 2010, 18:13 pm
@TaffyIX(TaffyIX)-83: Need a vivid imagination when listening to radio coverage!
I imagine the players as girls in bikinis.
14 Aug 2010, 18:13 pm
@Papoose(papaown)-85: The only worst thing is hoping for updates on Keo and not receiving them!
14 Aug 2010, 18:14 pm
HOW is Wilhelm Steenkamp getting excited abt a high tackle in Juries?
Poor sportsmanship!!
14 Aug 2010, 18:14 pm
Thanks chaps
Where’s “Big Hit” when you need him!
Enjoy the rugga
14 Aug 2010, 18:15 pm
good little run by De Waal
went passed Zane’s tackle
Nice
14 Aug 2010, 18:16 pm
What is the score?
14 Aug 2010, 18:16 pm
@Papoose(papaown)-87: Kirchener is the best fullback in South Africa when playing Currie Cup or Super 14.
Can’t match it at international level – mental thing maybe?
14 Aug 2010, 18:17 pm
@JKBridge(JKBridge)-93: 9-6 for the WP.
14 Aug 2010, 18:17 pm
Noticed how Vermeulen doesnt lose ball in the tackle , even from his 22
he doesnt seem quick enough to make a difference for Boks but i WISH Spies could learn from him abt the Basics required , technique wise, for a number 8
14 Aug 2010, 18:17 pm
been impressed witht he way De Waal is running this backline
not penetrating though and they leading only by 3
14 Aug 2010, 18:20 pm
@Papoose(papaown)-96: I agree with you completely. Vermeulen’s brain in Spies’s body would do pretty well.
I don’t think Spies is a natural born rugby player – great athlete, but poor coordination and not a great rugby brain.
14 Aug 2010, 18:20 pm
@(WOLFMAN21) thanks bud
14 Aug 2010, 18:22 pm
@JKBridge(JKBridge)-99: No worries dude – will post again when someone scores.
14 Aug 2010, 18:22 pm
@JKBridge(JKBridge)-93: 9-6 to Wee Pee
14 Aug 2010, 18:23 pm
i doubt any 1 will score a try today
but the team that does will win the game
14 Aug 2010, 18:23 pm
i’m calling this game for the Bulls
THATS RIGHT, I SAID IT
14 Aug 2010, 18:24 pm
12 – 6 Province
14 Aug 2010, 18:24 pm
12-6 wp
14 Aug 2010, 18:24 pm
@Senga(Senga)-104: WELL DONE Senga
pitty abt your altitude talk
14 Aug 2010, 18:24 pm
Fourie on for Liebenburg
lets see what difference this makes
how old is Fourie?
14 Aug 2010, 18:26 pm
Fadge Mabeta on
nt sure who he replaced
i noticed his would somtimes bench as lock during Super 14, but if he was benching today, it means he’s actually 7th choice Lock for Bulls
thats sad
14 Aug 2010, 18:26 pm
@Papoose(papaown)-106: Altitude be kicking in 1 minute…just watch!
14 Aug 2010, 18:26 pm
jaco pretorius is one of the most useless centres in rugby. The guys never does anything on attack.
14 Aug 2010, 18:27 pm
GOOD counter rucking Province
why cant the Boks do this?????
14 Aug 2010, 18:27 pm
GOSH
how can Bulls make 16 phase rugby look SOOO boring
14 Aug 2010, 18:28 pm
@Transformation(Transformation)-110: hahahaha
I KNOW
14 Aug 2010, 18:29 pm
@Transformation(Transformation)-110: Yeah, he is all action, all movement, for no effect.
Reminds me of Paul Adams – tried everything yet couldn’t get the ball to move off the straight.
14 Aug 2010, 18:29 pm
WOAH
Welsch just gave a HUGE hit on Kirchner
14 Aug 2010, 18:30 pm
JLP just missed a penalty
score 12-6 to Wee Pee
14 Aug 2010, 18:31 pm
Bulls miss a penalty – 12-6 to WP with 15 minutes left.
14 Aug 2010, 18:32 pm
De Waal breathing too heavily
1 poor kick 3 minutes ago, another clearance and he’s breathing quite heavily
time catching up with the old man?
14 Aug 2010, 18:34 pm
another botched kick by de Waal
just GIVING possession back to Bulls
bring on Cronje please
14 Aug 2010, 18:34 pm
@Papoose(papaown)-119: Geo?
14 Aug 2010, 18:36 pm
12-9 to Wee Pee
14 Aug 2010, 18:36 pm
10 minutes to play
a little piece of magic from one side could prove decisive
14 Aug 2010, 18:37 pm
@Senga(Senga)-120: Lionel
who are u dude
this is a RUGBY blog
14 Aug 2010, 18:38 pm
12-9 WP – Potgieter penalty.
14 Aug 2010, 18:40 pm
Bob says WP kicked majority of possesion away
thats NONSENSE, they’ve just made poor kicks in 2nd half cos De Waal is unfit
just caught onto something, the team that makes the poorer kicks in a game get lambasted for kicking everything away, in fact Bulls have kicked more than WP
14 Aug 2010, 18:41 pm
15-9 to Wee Pee
14 Aug 2010, 18:42 pm
Quite fun – the Bulls take the WP 9 out of the ball. The ref calls the Bulls player over, starts lecturing, and the Bulls captain says – OK, laaste een – before the ref has said what he is going to do.
Very sneaky!
14 Aug 2010, 18:43 pm
vermuelen MOM…nick koster anonymous, is he still on the park?
14 Aug 2010, 18:43 pm
JEESH Vermeulen is strong when he goes into contact
he’s difficult to bring down
i dont kow if opposition have studied Spies therby tackling him at the ankles but he always goes down very quickly when he goes into the contact situation
14 Aug 2010, 18:44 pm
15-12 to Wee Pee
3 minutes to go hmmmm
14 Aug 2010, 18:44 pm
@Papoose(papaown)-129: Spies is too upright when running into contact.
14 Aug 2010, 18:44 pm
Must say, this commentary on Radio 2000 is most entertaining with Lawrence Sephaka and Mac Masina.
Think I may use them as my audio source from now on! hehe
14 Aug 2010, 18:45 pm
@TaffyIX(TaffyIX)-132: what language
14 Aug 2010, 18:45 pm
@Transformation(Transformation)-128: nog n spies
14 Aug 2010, 18:46 pm
1 minute to go
Province still leading
14 Aug 2010, 18:46 pm
why did JLP just KICK that away?
14 Aug 2010, 18:47 pm
duvenhage can be such a doos…he is slow but he reckons he can dart like will genia
14 Aug 2010, 18:47 pm
Marius Jonker MOM
special mention Vermeulen
30 seconds to go
14 Aug 2010, 18:47 pm
@Transformation(Transformation)-137: hahahahahaha
14 Aug 2010, 18:48 pm
Close game. Congrats WP.
14 Aug 2010, 18:48 pm
what a kak game
14 Aug 2010, 18:48 pm
Penalty to Wee Pee
WP WIN
14 Aug 2010, 18:48 pm
@Papoose(papaown)-133:
English
14 Aug 2010, 18:48 pm
@Senga(Senga)-140: what happened to your Altitude?
DOOS
14 Aug 2010, 18:49 pm
boring game…
14 Aug 2010, 18:49 pm
Well done WP. Thought you would win by more.
14 Aug 2010, 18:51 pm
Not very pretty. Both teams had opportunities especially Province in the 1st half- could’ve sewn it up early.
Credit to the Bulls.
But as they say in the classics:
A win is a win
14 Aug 2010, 18:51 pm
@Papoose(papaown)-144: That was a joke. No altitude at sea level. Chill dude.
14 Aug 2010, 18:52 pm
@WOLFMAN21(WOLFMAN21)-146: me too
both teams were missing 8 boks
but i think with each team having the 8 boks back…Bulls would’ve beaten Province today
14 Aug 2010, 18:52 pm
Another poor game by de Waal. Him being man of the match is a joke. He looked so tired in the 2nd half.
14 Aug 2010, 18:52 pm
@Senga(Senga)-148:
14 Aug 2010, 18:53 pm
@Papoose(papaown)-149: Pretty pleased with the Bulls defence – WP have been hot on attack this Currie Cup, and the Bulls weak on defence.
14 Aug 2010, 18:54 pm
@Petri(Petri)-150: MOM
WHAT!!!
I Changed the channel quickly Vermeulen should’ve been MOM
De Waal MOM
What a shocker!!!
14 Aug 2010, 18:55 pm
Province just too strong in the end
They should have taken the penalties on offer in the 1st half which would have created a cushion.
Bulls played negatively and Jonker not keen to dish out cards.
But nevertheless result a fair reflection.
Province stronger in the end…
14 Aug 2010, 18:55 pm
Brok Harris just named MOM
what were you on abt Petri
14 Aug 2010, 18:55 pm
@Papoose(papaown)-153: brock harris
14 Aug 2010, 18:55 pm
well unsung hero then Brok
i did notice Provinces scrum was VERY strong
ok
well done buddy
14 Aug 2010, 18:56 pm
Brok the MOTM.
Gotta love it.
14 Aug 2010, 19:24 pm
IF Naka Drotske was non-white he’d be burned to ashes right now! Anybody wanna prove me wrong?
14 Aug 2010, 19:45 pm
@RugbyStudent(RugbyStudent)-159: um, but naka’s players get ripped from him by the sharks & western province.
14 Aug 2010, 19:51 pm
@Transformation(Transformation)-160:
What’s your point? I thought coaches had no excuses.
14 Aug 2010, 20:21 pm
well done to the Lions… now run off and leave the cup for a real rugby team
14 Aug 2010, 20:55 pm
Just a quick one. i am a WP fan, but a big up to the Lions and John Mitchell. I think P Divvy should rather shut up about NZ landers “sniffing around”. Mitchell has done wonders with this team, much more than **** the **** Muir. Did you see how Jantjies gave credit to Mitchell and Spencer for the man of the match award. I hope Mitch and King Carlos can keep “sniffing” around by the Lions, great work guys! Oh, and off course, Provinceee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! To all the Bulls fans, great game, thanks. And by the way, 8 Bulls by the Boks and 8 WP players by the Boks, so don’t even try that axcuse.
15 Aug 2010, 01:13 am
Yip best of luck to Mitchell def one of the best coaches in the world, not sure what he can do with the lack of talent but nice to see him in sa, the okes can surely learn a helluva lot
15 Aug 2010, 02:03 am

Here is a proper match summary … read and beware.
Beware, the Xerox Lions have arrived!
August 15 – The Xerox Lions revival that has been threatening for the past matches was very evident on Saturday as they wiped out a ten-point deficit for their 30-26 win over the Free State Cheetahs at Coca-Cola Park.
It was only their second win in the Absa Currie Cup this year and the Lions’ first over a major union and will be seen as a major stepping stone in their revival. In fact, the Free State were Currie Cup finalists last year!
It is also significant that the Lions have played four of their six matches to date – against Western Province, The Sharks, Griquas and the Platinum Leopards – away from home and therefore have five of their remaining Currie Cup matches at home.
It was a well-deserved win with the home side standing their ground in the scrums, holding their lineout throws and often looking threatening on attack.
Lions flyhalf Elton Jantjies was named Man of the Match after scoring 20 points, including a try, and succeeding with all six of his kicks at goal.
The win keeps the Lions in touch with the top four sides on the log, avoiding a loss that would have put an end to their semi-final aspirations.
The hosts went into the half-time break 13-9 ahead, and deserved their lead. They carried the ball more often than the Cheetahs, looked dangerous on a number of occasions, and crossed the line twice, although one try was rightly denied by the TMO.
The highlight of the first half was the immaculate chip by Jantjies two minutes before the break that was collected by right winger Deon van Rensburg to give the Lions the lead.
The home side showed greater patience at the breakdown than they have done in previous matches this season, but it remains a concern that they, like most South African sides, do not get the ball away quickly enough for an effective attack.
The Free State regained the lead less than four minutes into the second half after a sustained effort that ended in a five-metre scrum to the visitors, from where Ashley Johnson went over and Louis Strydom converted (16-13).
Another penalty by Strydom (19-13) and patient phase attack by the pack and the Free State backs seemed to have the Lions on the rack. The hosts, however, survived despite the yellow-carding of young flanker Renaldo Bothma, who had a lively game in his first start.
The match then turned the Lions’ way. They attack and the drove and with Jantjies – who had a good game after some average handling early on – and captain Franco van der Merwe prominent in the sequence, that brought them close to a try heading into the last quarter.
The pressure produced some reward as Jantjies reduced the lead to 19-16 from a penalty with 17 minutes remaining, but six minutes later Cheetahs replacement prop Kobus Calldo seemed to have sealed the match with a converted try (26-16).
However, the Lions regained control in the following eight minutes, most of which was played in the Free State quarter. Good patience, solid support and varied options kept them in control, eventually resulting in a try for Jantjies after prominent work from replacement flank Joshua Strauss.
With Jantjies converting from touch, where he had scored, the Lions were only three points behind when the death knell sounded for the visitors.
Michael Killian received after a maul following the restart where Jano Vermaak – again outstanding, did some sterling work. Killian broke and kicked ahead. The bouncing ball eluded him, but replacement Jannie Boshoff picked up and went over, and again Jantjies did the trick from touch and the Lions held out to win.
Scorers: Lions: Tries: Deon van Rensburg, Elton Jantjies, Jannie Boshoff. Conversions: Elton Jantjies (3). Penalties: Jantjies (3).
Free State Cheetahs: Tries: Ashley Johnson, Kobus Calldo. Conversions: Louis Strydom Meyer Bosman. Penalties: Strydom (4).

I have to say that Naka could be doing a lot better in the S14 with the players he has at his disposal. Hell he has two serious CC contender teams playing for him (Grieqwas and Free state), as well as the best feeder school in the world.
Perhaps it is time for a better coach. I would like to see what Jake White does with them.
PS why is it that Grey Bloem never gets invited to the World Schools Rugby competition?

@cab(cab)-164: I’d laugh if PDV noticed his success and drafted him as assistant Bok coach before the World Cup. How sweet revenge on the NZRU would be for Mitchell were he to succeed with SA.
Have your say
