WP clinch Cape cracker

JON CARDINELLI reports on WP’s 15-12 win over the Bulls in a bone-crunching and unforgettable derby at Newlands on Saturday.

The brutality of this contest was beautiful. Each collision appealed to the sick delight of the crowd, thousands of ‘ooohs’ quickly succeeded by a collective cry for more blood. This was Currie Cup combat at its best, as while the handling of both teams was below standard, the desire and intensity was spectacular.

Province enjoyed the majority of the possession in the first half, but the Bulls produced an inspirational display of defence to keep the hosts tryless. There were times when the Bully Boys lost their cool, the sin-binning of Gerhard van den Heever being a prime example. Amazingly, the visitors rallied together and kept a rampant WP at bay, finishing the period of sanction without conceding a solitary point.

Willem de Waal began this fixture in impressive form, and it surprised to see Anton van Zyl turning down kickable penalties as the Bulls repeatedly infringed. A promising movement from a set-piece deep in Bulls’ territory too often culminated in a knock on. You have to tip your hat to the Bulls defenders, but the fact that WP showed such a poor return for their first half possession was criminal.

Jacques-Louis Potgieter slotted the equaliser right after half-time as the Bulls played themselves back into the game. Tactically, Potgieter kicked cleverly, using the swirling wind to torment the WP back three. He was poorly supported in this facet, however. Zane Kirchner and scrumhalf Ruan Snyman failed to make telling kicking contributions, and the latter was under plenty of pressure at the base of the ruck.

WP did manage to penetrate the Bulls’ defence on occasion, Nick Koster’s incisive run after a well-taken lineout bringing the Newlands faithful to their feet. But poor hands cost them possession for the umpteenth time. WP’s lineouts were uncharacteristically inconsistent which also resulted in missed opportunities in Bulls’ territory. They held a slender 6-3 lead at the break when they should have been at least 10 points ahead.

But the Bulls were guilty of their own blunders, a decision to kick a penalty for touch backfiring horribly. Their maul from the lineout was marched back and possession conceded. This time WP’s defensive giants stood tall. That shaggy-haired monster, Duane Vermeulen, delivered some ball-jarring hits, as did former Blue Bull Frikkie Welsh.

A record Currie Cup crowd of over 47 000 were made to wait until the final quarter for the decisive blow. De Waal held his nerve to kick a 45m penalty before Potgieter missed one and then goaled another to leave the score at 12-9 with 10 minutes to play. De Waal’s fifth penalty was succeeded by another Potgieter goal, but that one miss proved to be the difference as WP played themselves into Bulls’ territory and killed the clock.

The result sees WP maintaining their unbeaten record and top position on the Currie Cup log. Their U19 and U21 teams also remain unbeaten after downing the Bulls juniors earlier on Saturday.

    @gunther(gunther)-302:

Gunther, the expense claim is a minor issue if an issue at all.

The main point here is the lack of professionalism at SARU in not following the correct protocols in obtaining Steyn’s release on two occasions. The Welsh test and this one coming up.

If we want to include guys from the NH we just have to follow the rules.

And it makes us look like a bunch of jerks.

  • 310.TASSIES: Reply to this comment

look you guys can make of this what you like. At the end of the day, the Bok management has to do what’s good for the team. Fransie is a laaitjie, a very talented one but a laaitjie nevertheless. So, he needs to be managed in a certain way. When I read these reports about Fransie these days, what immediately springs to mind is: the ‘tail wagging the dog’ syndrome. Maybe we’ll get the best out of Fransie yet. Now that he’s matured a bit. We’d all like him to be wearing the number green 15 jersey again but for my money, in the right frame of mind.

Question:Please let us know when you will (put) the petty personal issues aside and select the best fullback talent we have had in years. Frans (Steyn) is the most talented player since Naas Botha, but you let your personal feelings get in the way of us winning the 3N and the WC. You are supposedly to be objective, clearly not. Dawid Louw
Peter replies: Dawid, I am glad you asked that question. Thanks to Steven Hapelt, Gerrit Conradie, Mandy Kotze, Simon Clements and Jacques Harmse too for asking about Frans. There are no problems between Frans and I and I certainly do not have “petty” issues with him. I will never deny any player the opportunity of playing for his country. The truth is that Frans was only available for the Wales Test. Further discussion is needed with his club and agent about future availability and this is being dealt with presently. You have fallen for the perception created in the media that there may be issues between myself and the player which is untrue.

This is also not true, or PDV is being kept in the dark and fed sht all the time

Read the article on rugby 365 by Sharkie or on rugby talk.

Pierre Berbizier, director or Rugby at Racing Metro, gave Steyn a tounge lashing after the test against Wales. Steyn was under the impression that SARU had applied for his release for international duty but guess what. SARU hadn’t. Racing Metro said they won’t stand in Steyn’s way of representing his country as long as the correct protocols are followed.

And now, for this test, as you know , the 14-day rule wasn’t adhered to.

look who knows the real story? The point is, whether FS is available or not, we should be competitive against whoever is put in front of us. The fact that we are not(currently) begs another question. Fransie is not going to be the saviour to all men. There are one or other other issues to solve first.

If PDiv and his co-selectors say “we want Steyn in the squad” then SARU must make it happen.

But PDiv, and his co-horts, for that matter should understand different requirements exist when selecting a NH player. Maybe do their homework a bit better and understanding the overseas players club committments.

I don’t know if this 14-day rule applies to all overseas clubs or just the French ones.

This from a few day’s ago.

Frans Steyn won’t play against the All Blacks due to injury and eligibility problems.

Andy Marinos confirmed on Thursday that Steyn’s quad injury will rule him out of training until next Wednesday, only three days before the Test. However, there were also problems with the player being released by the FFR (Fédération Française de Rugby), as Saru failed to ask for the clearance request 14 days before the Test, as the French union wants.

@Big Hit(Big Hit)-347: BH ok so what you are saying we have to answer till 2012 then it will change as per the international test window??

  • 350.Big Hit: Reply to this comment

@sharks_lover(sharks_lover)-349: as far as I’m aware the Tri Nations never needed to be an IRB test window because (unlike the NH with the club v country issues) NZ/Aus/SA could always guarantee the release of their players from their provinces for the 3N tests so they didn’t need the window.

I believe it was only with Argentina joining that required the 3N (now 4N) to be under a test window as the Argentine players mostly play for French clubs in Europe.

JL1′s post at 323 states the regs will apply from 1st June 2012, until then SA will have to hand in the 14 day requests to FFR and hope the clubs release the player.

Invariably the clubs will release the player, it’s not good business for them to upset their playing staff. They will however not be keen on releasing them early without sufficient notice (which I think is basically what happened here).
