Sharks shut out Province
21 Aug 2010
GRANT BALL reports on the Sharks’ 27-16 victory over Western Province in Durban.
This top of the table clash was billed as a contest featuring two contrasting styles with Province’s more pragmatic game against the ball-in-hand approach of the hosts. However, both sides preferred to retain the ball and while the Sharks had most of the possession in the opening quarter, the visitors’ famed defence was solid as the Sharks’ attack proved too lateral early on.
While Province led 9-8 at the break, their problems at the set-pieces ensured the Sharks successfully shut them out the game to win the second half 19-7.
It was an arm wrestle in the opening half hour, with kickers Willem de Waal and Pat Lambie missing relatively easy chances, but the pair succeeded with later attempts to keep the scores tied at 3-3.
As Province came more and more into the game near half-time, De Waal claimed the lead with his second penalty. But it was short-lived, as Keegan Daniel benefitted from an unseen forward pass to beat the tackle of Pieter Louw and put Odwa Ndungane away in the corner.
While Lambie had missed two kicks, De Waal only missed the solitary effort and added his third to claim a one-point lead at the break.
Province were hampered by injuries to their two flanks, Louw and Rynhardt Elstadt, and as a result their defence waned. Bismarck du Plessis was instrumental with ball in hand, as was Willem Alberts, and with that forward momentum they found holes in the usually stern Province defence. The hosts came out strongly in the second half, and Kankowski broke the line to canter over.
When Lambie added another penalty to make it 18-9 and with the visitors uncharacteristically falling off many tackles, the Sharks looked clear favourites to break Province’s unbeaten run in the competition.
Province had their moments in opposition territory, but they were hampered by receiving slow ball from the rucks, with Du Plessis omnipresent in stealing or disrupting the ruck recycle. Conversely the Sharks repeatedly bossed the collisions, with only Duane Vermeulen knocking back runners (his massive driving tackle on Du Plessis was a classic).
The hosts grew in confidence as the match progressed, and were happy to inflict more pain via two penalties from Lambie and Stefan Terblanche’s drop to end the first round of the Currie Cup on top of the log.

Sharks totally deserve to win this game. Bismarck was briliant. But who was the referee? The worst display of refereeing I have seen in years. The pathetic ******* made so many f*%$&^ mistakes I at once stage wish Willie Roos will come out of retirement.

Well done Sharks. I was at FNB so didn’t get time to see the game. I heard we were well and truly beaten. Peaking at the right time and looking good.

Well played Sharks, a well deserved win. No excuses, some really big performances from a couple of your boys….
Still the best 2 teams in the comp by a mile.
22 Aug 2010, 08:35 am
Sharks playing great rugby, they look the real deal.
Well done boys, shows what a decent coach and men who are willing to put their bodies on the line are able to do.

Regretfully this WP team, without their Boks, are not up to winning the Currie Cup. Last weeks game against Bulls set the scene. The tight forwards were bullied by the Bulls and now again by the Sharks, and the backline is woefull with no one able to break or create anything. The looseforwards dont play together or link with the backline. I think Duane Vermeulen is overrated and one dimensional. De Waal kicks away possession and never breaks the line. One just cannot compare him to Lambie who is the find of the season. As for Jantjies …please send him to PdV. WP have a good coaching team but mediocre players. If they make it to final in Durban, Sharks will win cup.
WP supporter.

@justrugby(justrugby)-4:
that’s odd.
i am sure i saw you predict a weepee win on superbru.
will have to log in again to check.
unless my memory is failing me.

what a piece of **** biased reporting by an obvious wp supporter.
it was a hard game but a game the sharks dominated by far.
ludik got oncussed after looking real dangerous, no mention of that. the wp reserve flanks were better than the 2 that went of anyway. kanko was magic and bimark huge and duane solid. alberts is one of the best ball carriers. but kockott needs to start at scrumhalf.
please report any game fairly and on its merits, not just from your poofter brigade poiint of view. he more hings change the more they stay the same here on ke…
22 Aug 2010, 10:25 am
my take on wp…..we are just not quite there in terms of our willingness to take that leap of faith.
Seriously….how are we to win when we favour the willem de waal boot over game breakers like p grant and L Cronje?
Its like we are afraid to dive in and do it!
The sharks embraced the ball in hand game….and gambled with Lambie…..made a decision and went with it…..fortune favours the brave.
AC and Rassie should go with a Conrad Hoffman at 9 and L Cronje at 10….go with the exciting and hungry youngsters…..ric the team of the conservative shackles…..
Come on AC….Willem De Waal is not the answer….be brave.

cilliers
jannie
deysel
they also allowed 3 players to leave ealier in
muller
cartsens
murray who actually still had contracts till the end of the currie cup
then mapoe case not solved ….
so mate bad excuse , sharks bulls and stormers all effected
also the top 20 boks will not come back and play currie cup as agreed wtih the provincial coaches
rest and reconditioning is where they are headed
22 Aug 2010, 10:33 am
lastly rhys my friend we beat you in the super 14 with the same players you talk of
untill province have a tight 5 they will never be champs
not saying they aint a good team

22 Aug 2010, 10:35 am
beast sure did make brok his biotch
many players played great , stormers defence was very good or they would have taken a beating of note

@sharks_lover(sharks_lover)-60: that’s a lot of quality to return, they look good for the CC. Probably only the Bulls can stop them this year. Wouldn’t be surprised if that’s the final, just like ’08.
22 Aug 2010, 10:37 am
@Big Hit(Big Hit)-63: good morning BH mate
yeah good players but i have it the top 20 boks wont be allowed to play currie cup when bok games end
as i know it there is an agreement with the provincial coach to rest them and get reconditoned
22 Aug 2010, 10:40 am
@sharks_lover(sharks_lover)-64: gm sl, that’s a pity. I reckon the top Boks who aren’t going on the EOYT should be allowed to play since they have three months off then. Sharks can win it without them however.
22 Aug 2010, 10:42 am
the only players i see the sharks losing that wont come back to play further in the currie cup is smitty and ruan
jpp and bismark have had very long lay offs so i dont see the boks having them rested etc
this means
jannie
adi
deysel
mostert
mapoe?
cilliers
jpp will return to currie cup action
22 Aug 2010, 10:43 am
@Big Hit(Big Hit)-65: sharks have enough depth , and in the super 15 to the players they have one can add
mapoe
jacques louis porgieter
meyer bosman
22 Aug 2010, 10:45 am
although in saying that
i dont think deysel will be back this year with the injury he has
mostert adi and cilliers all back next week i hear
mostert and adi been out a long time
cilliers just minor niggles

22 Aug 2010, 10:52 am
@sharks_lover(sharks_lover)-69:
the sharks are playing a great brand of rugby at the minute.
they look very well coached with every player understanding their role in the greater scheme of things.
22 Aug 2010, 10:55 am
@sharks_lover(sharks_lover)-67: yeah it’s good Plumtree is stockpiling backlie players because a back injury crisis seems to have de-railed the Sharks S14 challenge since 2007
22 Aug 2010, 11:09 am
@Brigadier Van Zyl(Brigadier Van Zyl)-70: thanks mate
must say the backline coach in Hugh Reece Edwards many said is useless has made a big diffs since he reruend to coaching
just like slap tjips made at the bulls
22 Aug 2010, 11:11 am
@sharks_lover(sharks_lover)-69: Arrg, U19 lose again, not a great season for them
22 Aug 2010, 11:20 am
@sharks_lover(sharks_lover)-72: hahaha you’re saying HRE is the brains behind the tsharks in the currie cup?
hahaha what a laugh! The sharks scored how many bonus points in the s14 this year with HRE ‘consulting’?
what does bashford do if HRE is the main man?
22 Aug 2010, 13:48 pm
@Transformation(Transformation)-74: I don’t rate HRH either, will poke around and see what he really does at the camp.
22 Aug 2010, 13:56 pm
@Rhys7(Rhys7)-47:
Why are you laughing?
In the S14 the Sharks beat then Stormers (pit about their 1st 5 games).
You can only try and beat the side you are playing.
Missing players is never an excuse.
Take a defeat on the chin, commend your opposition and come back fighting.
22 Aug 2010, 14:05 pm
@Biscuit(Biscuit)-76: between the tick, the whine and the frozen ocean, some of the wp guys unfortunately come up short
Guy clearly isnt interested in rugby, only causing.
22 Aug 2010, 15:52 pm
@Geldjie(Geldjie)-50: Sharks are on top because they have the better blanced team. As in the S14, the Sharks destroyed WP up front, and they have a much better backline than the Bulls. The Bulls are nothing without FdP. This Sharks team is currently the best domestic team in SA.
Back to the drawing board! We need grunt upfront.
22 Aug 2010, 16:55 pm
WP were bullied up-front, just like the Stormers in the S14. Both sets of backs were pretty poor.
22 Aug 2010, 16:59 pm
I wish Kanko moved to center that try he scored was sublime. He would of made a great center.
22 Aug 2010, 17:10 pm
@charo(charo)-57:
Easy fella !!!
If you had read my posts during the week I said on numerous occasions that the Sharks because of the easy game against the Leopards and the extra day to recover and also at the tank , would be favourites to win.
I said in the last 20 Province would fade because of the tough game against the Bulls(and that’s what happened).
What I post on Spuperbru is more heart than logic !!!!
22 Aug 2010, 17:46 pm
Great performance by Sharks lead by a truly monstrous showing from Bissy and Beast. Both of them seem to be getting back to form after making rather quiet and at times poor returns. Immense showing from both.
WP were hurt when they lost two of their loose trio early on, and Duane was kinda left alone. Still had a strong game, but Deon Fourie was out of position and Koster was probably just pissing himself everytime Alberts ran at him.
Sharks took full advantage of the situation and were very impressive. Well done!
Can’t wait for WP v Sharks at Newlands. WP will bounce back strongly after this defeat.
22 Aug 2010, 19:39 pm
Well done Sharks!!! what an excellent performance, Bizzy was a monster as were Alberts and Beast.
22 Aug 2010, 19:42 pm
“(his massive driving tackle on Du Plessis was a classic)” talk about ******* ing biased reporting ffs!!!
22 Aug 2010, 19:43 pm
f*U*CK*ING biased reporting
23 Aug 2010, 07:32 am
2 + 3 the man of the match! That was garbage.
Kankowski or Daniel were far more useful than him.
I have proof!
Just look at the recap of his activity shown during the game.
In not one of those “carries” did he make as much as a metre once he made contact.
That’s how he plays – he looks busy but HE DOES NOTHING PRODUCTIVE.
The only other thing he did with the ball was turn it over.
One of his favourite tricks.
It’s amazing how many people he fools.
John Smit is exactly the same.
Kankowski has developed a selfish streak and it has cost the Sharks and not just in this last game.
His pace and brains are so useful to the Sharks, but he needs a kick in the backside.
23 Aug 2010, 07:54 am
congratulations to the sharks…
looking like a real championship team…
charo, puma and the other sharks fans… enjoy it…
the sharks are easily the best team in this year’s CC… i can’t see anyone stopping them unless they play well above themselves…
as the season has progressed they’ve just got better and better and their self-belief has just grown…
province looked short on ideas and stategy…
