Currie Cup latest (Wed)

Keo.co.za brings you the news from the Tri-Nations.

Bok discards boost WP

Gio Aplon and Francois Louw will start for Western Province in their clash against the Cheetahs on Friday.

Aplon and Louw, who featured against the All Blacks last weekend, were left out of the Springbok match 22 for this Saturday’s clash against the Wallabies and were released to play Currie Cup rugby.

Aplon replaces JJ Engelbrecht at wing while Francios Louw steps in for the injured Pieter Louw (rib) at openside flank. Nick Koster also returns to the starting line-up as Rynhardt Elstadt dislocated his thumb against the Sharks last weekend.

WP - 15 Conrad Jantjes, 14 Gio Aplon, 13 Tim Whitehead, 12 Paul Bosch, 11 Frikkie Welsh, 10 Willem de Waal, 9 Dewaldt Duvenage, 8 Duane Vermeulen, 7 Nick Koster, 6 Francois Louw, 5 Anton van Zyl (c), 4 Adriaan Fondse, 3 Brok Harris, 2 Tiaan Liebenberg , 1 Wicus Blaauw.
Subs: 16 Deon Fourie, 17 JD Moller, 18 Buhle Mxunyelwa, 19 De Kock Steenkamp, 20 Pieter Myburgh, 21 Conrad Hoffmann, 22 Lionel Cronje.

Cheetahs bench Nel

The Cheetahs will start Kobus Calldo ahead of WP Nel at tighthead prop for their match against Western Province on Friday.

Nel has featured in most of the Cheetahs’ Super 14 and Currie Cup fixtures this season, but has been dropped to the wood for the trip to Newlands.

Head coach Naka Drotske has also made two other changes to his run-on side. Francois Uys shifts from blindside flank to lock as Izak van der Westhuizen drops to the bench. Philip van der Walt will start in the No 7 jersey.

Cheetahs – 15 Hennie Daniller, 14 Philip Snyman, 13 Robert Ebersohn, 12 Meyer Bosman, 11 Jongi Nokwe, 10 Louis Stydom, 9 Tewis de Bruyn, 8 Ashley Johnson, 7 Philip van der Walt, 6 Hendro Scholtz, 5 Walti Vermereulen, 4 Francois Uys, 3 Kobus Calldo, 2 Adriaan Strauss, 1 Coenie Oosthuizen.
Subs: 16 Skipper Badenhorst, 17 WP Nel, 18 Izak van der Westhuizen, 19, Kabamba Floors, 20 Tertius Carse, 21 Sias Ebersohn, 22 Riaan Smit.

“while Francios Louw steps in for the injured Pieter Louw (rib) at openside flank.”

Interesting emphasis in the report, since everyone’s been going on about Flou not being an openside.

    6 F Louw
    7 Koster
    8 Vermeulen

Most exciting loose trio in the competition, no doubt!

1 Bok and two future Boks!

    WP jou lekka ding!

same old same old….willem wikkelspies the conservative choice at 10.

AC needs to take a leaf out of Plumtree s book…..a Conrad Hoffmann at 9 and a L Cronje at 10 will add some zip and fizz to a rather stale and sterile back performance.

Its about time WP rugby joined the flair and embraced the ball in hand approach.

Amazing how the sharks and Lions are playing the new dynamic style….with 2 kiwis in charge.

Drop the shackles of conservatism AC…..

Flo is a blindside who can play a bit of openside.

  • 7.quotas_sux: Reply to this comment

give me 9 penalties from de waal anytime rather than a groot gemors where you struggle to beat the pumas

  • 8.iori Yagami: Reply to this comment

@grant10(grant10)-5: Agree with you. WP has the backline to play great running rugby. The game plan is working at the moment so I doubt he will change much. Maybe against the Pumas or Leopards he can give Hoffman/Cronje a run but this is the Cheetahs…they are a tough team.

@iori Yagami(iori Yagami)-8: @grant10(grant10)-5: I agree with you both. I hope that against the smaller unions we will blood a different combo, for 80 minutes. The thing is, after showing much promise, I haven’t been all that impressed with the other options at 10, the little I’ve seen.

  • 10.WOLFMAN21: Reply to this comment

@WP_(WP_)-4: Sharks (when fit) and Bulls are more exciting.

Deysel, Daniels and Alberts, or Steggman, Potgieter and van Velze

  • 11.WOLFMAN21: Reply to this comment

@stormersboy(stormersboy)-9: Do you rate Cronje? I haven’t seen much of him yet.

  • 12.stormersboy: Reply to this comment

@WOLFMAN21(WOLFMAN21)-11: He came on with much promise, and certainly has talent, but as i mentioned above, I think he needs to get a good couple of games at 80 minutes to really show what he can do. Hoffman is another option at 10, as he plays there for Maties a great deal, and so obviously has the ability. They just need to make sure that they don’t pull a “pienaar” on him.

    @WOLFMAN21(WOLFMAN21)-10:

Don’t agree Deysel and Alberts both are crash ball specialists, with WP , Duane does that, Louw the fetching and Koster the inteligent linking…….looking forward to see how they go !!

  • 14.iori Yagami: Reply to this comment

@stormersboy(stormersboy)-9: You talking about Cronje right? Ja me neither but he shows lots of promise. He had a great U/20 tournament in 2009. @stormersboy(stormersboy)-12: Isnt Hoffman leaving?

Who will be our victim this weekend?

    ROAR

  • 17.WOLFMAN21: Reply to this comment

@justrugby(justrugby)-13: Yeah, much better approach that WP are taking with Koster. Keep him on the flank, and also take a long term approach – let him progress, rather than sticking him in the Super 14 team on the wing.

@stormersboy(stormersboy)-12: I think they are already pulling a Pienaar on Hoffman. I really like the look of him, the little I have seen. I say give him a chance in a tough match

I think naturally the backline will gel more now because they have played a few games together. WP should be looking first to secure the win then go for the bonus point(which we need if we are going to catch the Sharks).

redlion ..you think that the Lions will beat SWD or EP? honestly?

    6. daniel
    7. deysel
    8. alberts

  • 24.iori Yagami: Reply to this comment

Anyone know how long Pieter Louw is out for? He is playing great rugby at the moment. Also capable of playing all loose forward positions.

  • 25.WP_: Reply to this comment

    @WOLFMAN21(WOLFMAN21)-10: van Velze? hahaha, no…

Plus Deysel is a donkey, those two trio’s are decent but dont compare.

    @Transformation(Transformation)-23: I’d disagree with him ;)

@grant10(grant10)-5: de Waal has been good this year, Cronje is still coming through, but he’ll get his chance, WdW will retire soon.

  • 26.iori Yagami: Reply to this comment

@WP_(WP_)-25: Hopefully end of this year for De Waal.

  • 27.Transformation: Reply to this comment

    @WP_(WP_)-25: i agree deysel is indeed a donkey…

Paul Bosch & Tim Whitehead are average, they can play bur are nothing special. I’ve been watching waiting for either of them to show why they are playing for WP, noks, nada…the currie cup is at halfway mark i still can’t tell you what those 2 have done beyond the ordinary!

  • 28.WP_: Reply to this comment

@iori Yagami(iori Yagami)-26: Why? He’s got a huge boot, gets his backline away well, harding ever misses a kick at goal and is one of the highests point scorers in Currie Cup history…

  • 29.iori Yagami: Reply to this comment

@WP_(WP_)-28: Is he going to play ahead of Grant next year? If no then whats the point of having him on the bench. I would rather start investing in Cronje next year.

  • 30.WP_: Reply to this comment

@Transformation(Transformation)-27: ya they been solid, but thats about it… Those type of guys need to play with a creative player in the centre partnership, a de Jongh for eg. Makes them look better

  • 31.WP_: Reply to this comment

@iori Yagami(iori Yagami)-29: He may do, he may not. What happens if Grant gets injured? I’ll agree that Cronje will probably sit on the bench as Grant will start but de Waal is not a bad option to have in the squad.

  • 32.stormersboy: Reply to this comment

@iori Yagami(iori Yagami)-14: Yes I am talking about him, and I understand that the Sharks have expressed intrest, but nothing is confirmed yet. I hope we can hold onto him.

@wernergreeff fanclub membership 3(wernergreeff fanclub membership 1)-18: I see where you are coming from, but to an extent I’ve been comfortable with it because it’s important to get him exposed to the higher level of play, and if it’s at fullback, flyhalf and Scrumhalf, then ok, but at some point he needs to have his future solidified. I believe it’s at 9, but if it’s 10 then so be it, but let’s do it already.

hey grant… lekker day in CT…??!! how you doing…?

yeah… agree… AC has gotta start giving Cronje some starts… keep De Waal on the bench as a safety net if he has to… but we need cronje to develop for the S15 and time is running out…

  • 34.iori Yagami: Reply to this comment

i think they’ve been great within the pattern of play they’ve been handed… their defense has been immense… not just solid or ordinary… but exceptional… IMO…

the whole team could do with a more attacking philosophy… but each have made breaks to show they have the goods to do it…

i think they’ll both just get better and better… and with guys like JdJ, JdV and JF… to show them a thing or two they can only benefit…

@ufo(ufo)-35: True, they are both young and new to provincial rugby. I reckon they’ll only improve and go from strength to strength.

Solid players, they had the odd flash of brilliance but you’re right mayb e its the pattern that makes them look just solid

not too bad my side….ja…i know you and robzim love old wikkelspies….but i just feel we need to be a little bolder….Conrad Hoffman deserves a run at 9 and L ronje should be trusted a bit more…..time is running out now…..

hey grant…i actuaally DO agree with you on this… said at the beginning of the season i’d start with willem and sub with lionel… giving lionel more and more time to build into the role until he starts…

but that hasn’t been happening and AC seriously needs to start giving cronje game-time and starts otherwise it IS gonna bite us in the S15… so yes… AC needs to be bolder and start cronje…

also agree with you about hoffman… i’m so disappointed he’s leaving… one of our brightest stars in the making…

I THINK PEOPLE REALY UNDER RATE PLAYERS LIKE, KEAGEN DANIEL AND JAQUE BOTES. THEY HAVE BEEN BRILLIANT FOR THE SHARKS!!!

  • 42.Stoan: Reply to this comment

@grant10(grant10)-5: i couldn’t agree with you more. i also thought since Grant was allowed to go play in Japan, AC was going to use the CC as a stepping stone for LJ. that has not happened even in gmes where WP play weak teams. it’s a sad syndrome that SA coaches have against blooding young players.
i bet that had it been an SA coach in charge of the Lions, Elton would still be playing under 21 or Vodacom Cup….

    @ufo(ufo)-40:

Tthe reason why Coetzee prefers Duvenhage to Hoffman is that he believes Duvenhage is more a team player who follows instructions and plays within and according to the “system and structure” while Hoffman is more individualistic.(same as Kockott)

Imo there is no doubt that Hoffman is by far the more talented player with better all round skills and flair than Duvenhage. Duvenhage however is solid and wont let a team down easily but is limited and will probably never become a world class player.

Hoffman should do well at the Sharks under Plumtree who has shown lately that he prefers a more open and less structured style of play than Coetzee – it is terrible to allow such a talented player who has played all his rugby in the Cape to leave but for the players sake it is the best. I am surprised that he has not left long ago.

@justrugby(justrugby)-13: I would swap the roles of Koster and Duane. i Would play Koster at 8 for the reasons you mention and play Duane at 7 for the same reasons.

i see why Duane will not make the Boks anytime soon, he always tends to die with the ball rather than link play well. He is also slow i think more especially for the tests games with these fast rules. But i still think he is as hard as they come.

    hey rob…?

    yeah, i don’t begrudge the guy moving…

but the fact that the sharks say they want him as a utility means he’ll get plenty of game time… all over the place… which… judging by guys like brent russell, ruan pienaar and frans steyn… is not a good thing at the sharks…

i just wish these players would show a little more emotional maturity and not always expect instant gratification… hoffman would have got plenty of play-time in the S15 and (with aninjury or two) even become the starter…

    he was ‘this’ close…
