Currie Cup latest (Mon)

Keo.co.za brings you the news from the Currie Cup.

WP sweat over Liebenberg

Tiaan Liebenberg may miss Western Province’s clash against the Lions in Johannesburg on Friday because of an ankle injury.

The hooker injured his ankle in the defeat to the Cheetahs last Friday and will be assessed by a specialist on Monday. If Liebenberg is ruled out, Deon Fourie will be promoted to the starting line-up.

WP could be without speedster Gio Aplon too as he returns to the Boks. Head coach Allister Coetzee will have to wait and hear if he will be released again this week.

The extent of centre Tim Whitehead and flanker Pieter Louw’s injuries should be confirmed soon as the duo were sidelined last weekend. Whitehead, who was a late withdrawal from the starting line-up last Friday, and Louw are suffering from hamstring and rib injuries respectively.

Good news for WP is that prop JC Kritzinger has recovered from his hamstring injury and will be available for the trip to Johannesburg.

Looking forward to the game RL!

Been really disappointed with the effort of WP these past 2 weeks… De Waal has been irritating the **** out of me and too Brok and Wicus who are always standing off and not getting into the rucks. I appreciate them wanting to take the ball up and I assume it is part of the game plan but ffs, they need to get stuck into those rucks from time to time. Have a bit of variety in your play!

Wasn’t happy with Duvenage’s game either… feel even more frustrated with the fact that we sold our best 9 to the Sharks!

Anyway, they need to lift their game in all facets… WP JOU LEKKER DING!

@Gambit25(Gambit25)-4: It is going to be one heck of a match with all the pressure on the visitors … Lions tails are up and hungry for more victories.

This coming weekend is the weekend to make up superbru points. I think the easiest one to call is that the Sharks will win at Loftus.

Sharks really looking good… Think the Bulls will provide a stern test though. Must also say that I have not been too impressed with Juandre Kruger for the Bulls. Maybe it was all the hype that built up my expectations… Maybe he needs more game time…

@Gambit25(Gambit25)-7: I think it had been a mistake to play him immediately. His season should start only now with the Northern hemisphere season starting now.

I remember him playing in the semi against Sarries and he was brilliant.

@Gambit25(Gambit25)-4: We sold our best number 9 to the Bulls a few seasons ago. Any update on the rest of the CC teams ? There are a few more you know.

    @Gambit25(Gambit25)-7:

maybe also the fact that he played a full uk season with no break into a currie cup season?

the bulls look very disjointed, players leaving, players injured, players with the boks and then the bees roux incident can’t be helping them.

nontheless, should’ve still klapped the pumas.

brummer missing 6 kicks at goal doesn’t help

@Brigadier Van Zyl(Brigadier Van Zyl)-11: I have always likes the way Brummer sends the backline away. He could add an extra dimension to the Bulls, but last year he had some games where he hooked every second kick. It does not seem as if he has rectified this problem in a year’s time. If he cannot get his kicking right he should start playing inside centre, otherwise he will never make it big time.

@sparticus(sparticus)-9: Hear you… but I’ve always rated Hoffmann, even while Hougaard was still in the Cape!

Hougaard has come on quite far already and it seems he will only get better. Happy for him!

Also… I do not like the WP u21 scrummie. Was captain of the SAu20 side that went to Argentina this year… I do not rate him and I assume that is why Rassie allowed Hoffmann to go, because he felt he had enough cover at 9 with Schreuder coming through!

I do not agree with Rassie, but I’m not the Director of Rugby…

I can actually see WP losing 3 of their next 6 matches. Lions away, Bulls away and Sharks at home won’t be easy. Also, they can’t play Burger, Habana and Fourie because they are contracted.

big ask to win in loftus ! doesnt come down to how good you ae on paper ,comes down to heart and team, hope my sharks are up for it

Anyone know where can get stats on Super rugby ? Looking for things like team sheets and results from back in the day.

I am seriously excited about the Sharks/Bulls game.

The Bulls will see this as an opportunity for redemption after losing to the Pumas – so, I expect them to lift their game a lot but with the momentum the Sharks have got – its a tough call for the Bulls.

I dont think it will be as big a hiding as most people are predicting, but I dont see the Sharks losing this one.

    Prediction: Bulls 20 – Sharks 35.

@sparticus(sparticus)-18: Sharticus – do you have any idea who the players are that are ‘contracted’ and so will not be permitted to take part in the Currie Cup after the tri-nations ?

The WP supporters (and the one-eyed, CPT based, rugby Press) are starting to get the first signs of diarrea whilst the vulturers on the rugby sites (I guess I’m one too) are starting to circle.
It should make for an interesting week.
And putting aside my personal bias, the Lions are starting to believe that they could just be the “villians” on Saturday….and are loving it !!

It wouldnt be the first time the Lions upset WP or the Stormers apple cart.

PdV is really messing things up for WP; why drop a guy 2 weeks earlier then call hom back a week later; leave Gio at Province; the boks are already done and dusted.

thinking we are going to see the EP in next years CC….top of the log and unbeaten!!!Great to see they are getting things going in PE; Thanks to Solomons

    @BERNARD(BERNARD)-24: Burn hard :-)

Do you know if there will be relegation/promotion games again this year ?

I agree with you, I think EP will be in the Currie Cup next year, because they should trample the Leopards.

I would like to see them there, because even though I grew up in Amazimtoti, I was born in PE. So, I will have a good reason to have EP as my ‘second’ team.

I think my dad will be overjoyed. Although he also supports the Sharks – his original allegiance has always been with EP. That was the very first team he shouted for. :-)

I also hear that EP have a whole host of signings – including quite a few prominent Bulls players that will probably be announced over the next year or so.
