Keo.co.za brings you the news from the Currie Cup.
Bulls grant Bees leave
Blue Bulls’ Bees Roux has been placed on leave by his club until further notice following his court appearance in connection with the murder of a traffic official, club executive officer Barend van Graan said on Tuesday.
“He has been through some tough times in recent days and we feel it is appropriate to give him some time to recover from this,” Van Graan said.
Ludeke ready for Sharks onslaught
Frans Ludeke has brought back several players for Saturday’s crunch game against the Sharks.
Gerrit van Velze, Jaco van der Westhuyzen, Jacques-Louis Potgieter, Ruan Snyman and Fudge Mabeta will all feature in the starting side. Ludeke said the changes should give the Bulls the boost they need after last week’s shock loss to the Pumas.
‘The Sharks have their tails up and deserve to be on top of the log at the moment,’ Ludeke said. ‘We cannot afford to drop a home game and it is time for us to force our authority on the competition. Last weekend was very disappointing, but we get an opportunity to rectify that this weekend.’
Bulls - 15. Zane Kirchner, 14. Gerhard van den Heever, 13. Jaco Pretorius, 12. Wynand Olivier, 11. Jaco van der Westhuyzen, 10. Jacques-Louis Potgieter, 9. Ruan Snyman, 8. Gerrit-Jan van Velze, 7. Dewald Potgieter, 6. Derick Kuun (c), 5. Fudge Mabeta, 4. Juandre Kruger, 3. Werner Kruger, 2. Bandise Maku, 1. Dean Greyling.
Subs: 16. Henry Bantjes, 17. Frik Kirsten, 18. Jaco Engels, 19. Wilhelm Steenkamp, 20. CJ Stander, 21. Dustin Jinka, 22. Stefan Watermeyer
Minnie boost for Lions
Derick Minnie has recovered from injury and will start for the Lions when they host Western Province on Friday.
The flanker missed the win over the Leopards last weekend with a ‘niggle’ but returns to the starting line-up as he replaces Renaldo Bothma in the No 6 jersey, who drops to the bench.
Head coach John Mitchell made one other change, which sees lock George Earle start ahead of Johan Snyman, who also finds a place amongst the reserves.
The Lions will look for their fourth consecutive win in Johannesburg this weekend while WP will try to avoid a hat-trick of defeats.
Lions – 15 Jaco Taute, 14 Jannie Boshoff, 13 Waylon Murray, 12 Doppies la Grange, 11 Michael Killian, 10 Elton Jantjies, 9 Jano Vermaak, 8 Warren Whiteley, 7 Joshua Strauss, 6 Derick Minnie, 5 Franco van der Merwe (c), 4 George Earle, 3 Ross Geldenhuys, 2 Martin Bezuidenhout, 1 JC Janse van Rensburg.
Subs: 16 Edgar Marutlulle, 17 Wayne Swart, 18 Johan Snyman, 19 Renaldo Bothma, 20 JP Joubert, 21 Burton Francis, 22 Marius Delport.
Drotske keeps faith in team
Naka Drotske has made no changes to his match 22 for the Cheetahs’ clash against Griquas in Kimberley on Friday.
The head coach has decided to name the same team who upset Western Province in Cape Town last Friday. This sees tighthead prop Kobus Calldo keep his starting place ahead of WP Nel.
Cheetahs – 15 Hennie Daniller, 14 Philip Snyman, 13 Robert Ebersohn, 12 Meyer Bosman, 11 Jongi Nokwe, 10 Louis Strydom, 9 Tewis de Bruyn, 8 Ashley Johnson, 7 Philip van der Walt, 6 Hendro Scholtz, 5 Waltie Vermeulen. 4 Francois Uys, 3 Kobus Calldo, 2 Adriaan Strauss (c), 1 Coenie Oosthuizen.
Subs: 16 Skipper Badenhorst, 17 WP Nel, 18 Izak van der Westhuizen, 18 Kabamba Floors, 20 Tertius Carse, 21 Sias Ebersohn, 22 Riaan Smit.

What an awesome team the Lions have.
1 Sep 2010, 08:31 am
lions won’t beat EP or SWD … if the Pumas’s captain had half a brain they would’ve gone for the draw.

it’s gonna be tough one for wp… lion’s looking good under mitchell and spencer…
“Minnie boost for Lions”
well, wp can count their blessings… the headline coulda read…
“Major boost for Lions!!”
1 Sep 2010, 08:49 am
Ja I hope WP pull it together on Friday!!

I think we are missing Pieter Louw. He makes a big impact when he is on the field.

@iori Yagami(iori Yagami)-7:
too true bud… too true…

@iori Yagami(iori Yagami)-6: Uh Oh…WPs in trouble….Sharks & Cheetahs came along and they burst WPs bubble….Uh Oh….
Good luck against the Lions. Goodness knows, they have a habit of upsetting you guys.

@RedLion is born again(RL)-3: They have a very exiting backline, not sure they are up to it in the forwards, but could be a good game.
1 Sep 2010, 09:23 am
damn its a huge game for wp…..i am very nervous….make or break boys…..and at altitude against Mitchells fired uop cubs…..ai !!!!

@grant10(grant10)-11: I tell you what – the Sharks are also up against it this weekend. These boerseuns here in Pretoria are looking to ‘set the record straight’ after their loss to the Pumas – so, they will play like men posessed.
I still believe the Sharks will be too good, but – lets wait and see. Ummmm – at least we have a 7 point log lead – so, no matter what happens, the Sharks will still be Nr 1 after this weekend
1 Sep 2010, 09:35 am
@Dusky(Dusky)-12: you right there Dusky….those Bulle will be hectic….should be a thriller…
1 Sep 2010, 09:46 am
@grant10(grant10)-13: Ja – the ultimate redemption, or at least in the minds of the Pretorianers will be to beat the front running Sharks. They will believe that this would nullify the embarrassing loss to the Pumas.
The Sharks have a few injury concerns, but the Bulls are also without Dewald Potgieter and Wynand Olivier this weekend, and the Bulls have a couple of weak points where the Sharks have players in top form at the moment.
But – as we know with the Bulls – they have the ability to play beyond themselves when the need arises as we saw in Cape Town. I thought WP would rip them a few new holes, but it wasn’t the case.
All I know – is that no team that has tried to employ the traditional South African defensive pattern has survived the Sharks this season.
The team that has scored the most tries against the Sharks are Griquas – because they are confident enough to play a high tempo, high risk, open game. If the Bulls play a defensive game pattern, it will be game over for them from the start.
Hard one to call. I am watching the game with a bunch of Bulls on Saturday, so – may the force be with me

@I_support_BEES(suffer_guy)-4: If the guy had only half a brain he’d probably go round calling himself “I support Bees” or something equally dumb.
1 Sep 2010, 09:50 am
@Dusky(Dusky)-14: sharks and lions are on the right track…..2 best coaches there…..and it shows….
Without Dewalt Potgieter and WO Bulls will find it very difficult…..Sharks are not scared of Loftus….win there often….
If i had to make a call i would say sharks, especially if bulls without dewalt…..
Bulls fans are not that bad…..but i suggest you drink windhoel lites……and wear Nike tackies…..just in case you need to run!

Weakened Wiepie (read: underestimating) to get an arse-kicking of note up in Jozi. Mark the words of the katman.
1 Sep 2010, 09:57 am
@grant10(grant10)-16: I would say you are probably right – the Bulls are the ones that have to bring something special to this game to win.
The Sharks just have to play their normal game well, and they are home free in this one. I would have been happier if Ryan Kankowski was available, and also I just hope Bismark can play.
Well with a Currie Cup record of Sharks 10 – Bulls 2 in the last 12 Currie Cup games, these guys celebrate every single win over the Sharks and to be amongst them after a Sharks loss is always a bit ‘challenging’
In general Bulls and Sharks fans seem to get along ok. We dont have the history vs. the Bulls that you guys have I suppose
Lets see who is smiling on Monday !

Eish, tough one for WP. Must say lions are doing beter and beter all of a sudden. Will not be suprised if WP get’s a hiding.
1 Sep 2010, 10:35 am
@stormersboy(stormersboy)-10: yes we need some hard men in the forwards, locks are promising but too light in the back row.
1 Sep 2010, 11:12 am
@RedLion is born again(RL)-20: We could use one or two more ourselves by the look of recent performances
1 Sep 2010, 11:19 am
@grant10(grant10)-16: what about a speedo, surely that is more aerodynamic?
1 Sep 2010, 12:37 pm
Last time I checked, WP were 2nd on the log.
Now after 2 losses, everyone’s jumping ship or running for the life rafts, predicting a loss against the LIONS???
Seriously guys…WP by 10
1 Sep 2010, 12:44 pm
@stormersboy(stormersboy)-21:
Do you know why Lionel’s been excluded from the starting 22?
1 Sep 2010, 13:34 pm
@Frankly speaking(Frankly speaking)-23: I agree – this is one of those typical situations where media hype overtakes reality.
In reality, WP will beat the Lions and the Sharks will win at Loftus. But – life wouldn’t be fun if we were all realists…
So, just to soften up your stomach a bit, add a bit of laxation to your bowel movements, the media will tell us how suddenly the Lions and Bulls will rise from the ashes this weekend and thrash WP and Sharks.
Same as the world cup final in 2007, when England that had endured a 36 – 0 hiding by the Springboks were suddenly going to upset us in the final. Pffffttt….fat chance….media bull.
Its all part of the fun Frankfurter – didn’t you know ?

1 Sep 2010, 15:47 pm
Can a guy on bail play professtional rugby?
Probably wouldnt send the right message…
1 Sep 2010, 15:49 pm
WP by 800
But seroiusly, I’n not sure who to pick on superbru, the red-hot Guppies or the Bulls at Loftus… Tough call
1 Sep 2010, 15:53 pm
@WP_(WP_)-29: I would take a risk and pick the Bulls. The majority will pick Sharks – and so you will score big if the Bulls win.
And there is definitely a chance of an upset. Although slim – there is a chance
1 Sep 2010, 15:54 pm
@Dusky(Dusky)-30: Hey WP – I dont want to disturb you while you are busy with Superbru – so, once you are finished….
Check out the Bulls tight 5 vs. the Sharks.
Did you pick Bulls ?
1 Sep 2010, 15:57 pm
@Dusky(Dusky)-31: Havent picked yet
Bulls tight 5 is ok I suppose, Sharks front row will be much better tho with Beast and Bissy.
1 Sep 2010, 15:59 pm
@Dusky(Dusky)-31: Have the Sharks announced their squaed yet?
1 Sep 2010, 16:07 pm
@WP_(WP_)-33: No – but maybe you should wait to make your picks. They should announce tomorrow morning.
It will probably be;
15 – Ludik, 14 – Ndungane, 13 – Terblanch, 12 – Swanepoel or Strauss, 11 – Mvovo, 10 – Lambie, 9 – McLeod, 8 – Alberts, 7 – Botes, 6 – Daniels, 5 – Skeate (maybe), 4 – Sykes, 3 – Herbst, 2 – Du Plessis (maybe), 1 – Beast.
Reserves: Kockott, Strauss (maybe)/Pretorius, Dumond, Van Staden, Hargreaves (maybe)/Bresler, Rhodes, Burden.
All of those with maybe have some injury concerns – so, we wont know until tomorrow whether they will be in or not.
1 Sep 2010, 16:16 pm
@Dusky(Dusky)-34: Yeah I will do, I’m leaning towards the Sharks at the moment. Your mob better not let me down!
Have your say
