Keo.co.za brings you the news from the Currie Cup.
Ludik, Hargreaves return
John Plumtree has made two changes for the Sharks’ match against the Bulls on Saturday.
The injured pair of Louis Ludik and Alistair Hargreaves return to the starting team at fullback and lock respectively for the Loftus clash.
Sharks – Louis Ludik; Odwa Ndungane, Stefan Terblanche (c), Andries Strauss, Lwazi Mvovo; Patrick Lambie, Charl McLeod; Keegan Daniel, Willem Alberts, Jacques Botes, Alistair Hargreaves, Steven Sykes, Wiehahn Herbst, Bismarck du Plessis, Tendai Mtawarira.
Subs: Craig Burden, Eugene van Staden, Michael Rhodes, Skholiwe Ndlovu, Rory Kockott, Andre Pretorius, Riaan Swanepoel.
Mitch commits to Lions
John Mitchell will coach the Lions’ Super 15 and Currie Cup teams for the next three years.
The Kiwi coach has been released from his Western Force contract and will join the Johannesburg union fulltime. Mitchell replaces Dick Muir as the team’s head coach of the Super Rugby franchise, although Muir will remain as the Lions’ director of rugby.
At the Force, Mitchell will be replaced by Wallabies skills coach Richard Graham.

@ufo(ufo)-49: If you guys haven’t managed to get Fourie Du Preez – you can have him. I give you my blessing.
Morne is only Morne with Fourie at 9. No Fourie Du Preez at 9 = Very average Morne Steyn. He is a good place kicker – thats about it.
Lambie will be twice the flyhalf Steyn is in a season or two’s time. So – good luck to WP if they have managed to get him.
2 Sep 2010, 16:06 pm
@Dusky(Dusky)-50:
i’m not saying they will make the play-offs…
all i’m saying is that they’re playing better rugby than they have been…
do you not think so…?
i’ve always hated the whole s15 concept… i think many teams are going come unstuck…
2 Sep 2010, 16:10 pm
@ufo(ufo)-52: Really ? After they almost lost to the Pumas ? I mean – the Pumas were the better side in that game – there is nobody that can argue otherwise.
The Lions were literally saved by the hooter – literally !
And dont bring up the Bulls loss to the Pumas – we all know that Bulls side will look very different with their Springboks back, whereas how many Lions return after the tri-nations again ?
No – I dont feel there is an improvement at all. I think they caught the Cheetahs on an off night – and thats the only team worth mentioning that they have beaten this season.
So – I will reserve my comments for when I see some real progress. Like maybe next year they wont come last in the Super 15, and get smacked by the team that came second last.
Tell me – if there is such a huge improvement – which Lions do you think should be in the Bok team ? And who should they displace ?
2 Sep 2010, 16:14 pm
@ufo(ufo)-52: I mean Ryan Kankowski and JP Pietersen have to be f#$*en daft to go to the Lions – so, if they do – good luck to them.
Flippin enjoy getting your butt kicked week in, week out.
Sharks will happily put Lionel Mapoe at 14, and we have Michael Rhodes developing into a promising young loose forward.
So – bye JP and Kanko. Enjoy it !

@Dusky(Dusky)-51:
sheesh dusky… silly me… please excuse the musings of a naive and clueless rugby fan… you’re right of course…
lambie’s going to lead the sharks continued domination of sa rugby for the next decade at least…
the rest of us mere minnows are all gonna be battling for second place…
heck… we should just give you guys the CC permanently… and not even bother playing the sharks… all us minnow provinces like the bulls, cheetahs, lions and wp can start our own domestic trophy… just to give us a chance of winning something… perhaps we could call it the Goldfish Bowl… in deference to the mighty sharks owning the currie cup…
let’s just hope that when lambie leads you into a home semi-final this year that all you loyal sharks fans will actually pitch up and not leave 20 000 seats empty…!!
2 Sep 2010, 16:26 pm
@ufo(ufo)-55: I didn’t say anything about WP, Cheetahs or Bulls being minnows, but hey – if you wish to classify yourself that way, I will remember for future reference.
I tell you what – you minnows play the Currie Cup and whoever wins plays the Sharks. Easy – then for one, the Sharks wont take up a place and someone else can end top of the log for once.
You are dreaming – there is never a seat empty in Durban for a playoff game. Just like Red Kitten – you are having some weird dreams see. Lay off the tik.
And as I told you before – the only reason Newlands fills up every Saturday is because WP rugby gives away tickets for free and offers a free bottle of methylated spirits to everyone that pitches up.
2 Sep 2010, 16:29 pm
@ufo(ufo)-55: And dont be so flippin jealous because your useless flyhalf is being exposed for how useless he is.
You can say what you like about Lambie. I think Rassie would literally give one on his balls for Lambie right now. So – joke all you like.
2 Sep 2010, 16:32 pm
@Dusky(Dusky)-54: Dunno, Polla is pretty settled in Durban. Quite recently acquired a new property, his gf is from Durban. I’ve in the past joked tha he should move to Pretoria and played for the Bulls but he claims Pretoria has no night life, he would never make the move. Jozi? Maybe. Waylon Murray is a good friend of his and is Dusty Noble (his cousin) still on the Lions books?
2 Sep 2010, 16:34 pm
@Dusky(Dusky)-54: what about kanko and jp to lions? when this?
2 Sep 2010, 16:37 pm
@Taahirah(Taahirah)-58: Ja – the other thing about Pretoria is you have to be careful – there are drunken Pretorianites hanging around and they bliksem people to death if you do something they dont like.
JP can go to Jozi – no problem. He, like some other players have had their ups and downs, but I tell you playing for a team that gets their butt handed to them week in, week out – will no doubt spiral JP down the toilet.
So – good luck to him.
Actually, to my knowledge the Sharks have already negotiated with Bjorn Basson, so perhaps JP is worried about getting game time with all these talented youngsters arriving.
2 Sep 2010, 16:39 pm
@Seven(Seven)-59: Ag – its just a Lions ‘wet dream’. Besides – they can actually both go. They have such fluctuating form – the both of them, you never know whats going to pop out the lucky packet next weekend – a diamond ring or a dog ****.
So – cheers to them. We’ll see them when the Sharks come to thrash the Lions again.
2 Sep 2010, 16:42 pm
@Dusky(Dusky)-61: jacobs must go too..
kankko good at currie cup and super 14, jpp well we could have frikkie welsh or deon v rensburg or worse….so not that bad
2 Sep 2010, 16:44 pm
@Dusky(Dusky)-56:
hehehe
take two chill pills and go and sleep on it…!!
calm down dusky…
don’t take yourself so seriously…
not acknowledging the improvement in the lions play under mitchell and trashing any perceived threat to the sharks reveals much about your own blinkered view of the world…
i’m certainly not ‘jealous’ of the sharks… and comments like that have a decidely juvenile ring to them…
it is a well reported fact that last year when the sharks played the cheetahs in the CC semi-final (which the sharks lost)… the shark tank had 20 000 empty seats… your blind denial of that fact again reveals a very slanted view you have of the world…
but hey… keep telling us how great and unbeatable you and lambie and the sharks are… and how shamelessly terrible everybody else is…
must be easy being a sharks fan… knowing you’re the best and gonna win everything…
2 Sep 2010, 16:44 pm
Geez I rest my case about Shark supporters !!!!
2 Sep 2010, 16:53 pm
@ufo(ufo)-55: Obviously if you want a balanced opinion you are not speaking to the right person. However if you can look past all the shark-drivel Dusky does have a point, it seems a lot of people are so desperate for a Lions revival that they are clutching at straws. After 8 games in a springbok-less Currie Cup we are 6th on the log, with the only win against a “top team” a last minute lucky win at home against the Cheetahs.
As a long-suffering Lions fan, frankly I haven’t yet seen enough improvement to be optimistic.
2 Sep 2010, 16:56 pm
jacobs and krusty to the lions would a dream headline
followed by lions to change their colours to yellow for the gold of jozi and the lions and P divvy can bring back his yellow rain coat
2 Sep 2010, 17:06 pm
@ufo(ufo)-63: I dont see an improvement. Is that ok with you ? Its my opinion. What improvement do you speak of ? Because they beat the Cheetahs ? Actually, after 13 losses in the Super 14, that is an improvement. So – perhaps you’re right.
There is no such a fact – I was at that game. Find me the reports and I’ll believe it. As I said – stop smoking tik – its not good for you. Tell your mom not to put it in your lunch box.
It is easy being a Sharks fan. Very easy.
Lions still suck – which will be reinforced this weekend. Wait and see.
2 Sep 2010, 17:06 pm
@justrugby(justrugby)-64:
hey JR..?
@Knersus(Regatta)-65:
not at all bud… all i’m simply doing is acknowledging they’re playing better rugby under mitchell than they did under muir…
i didn’t even know their position on the log… i’m not saying they are… or expecting them to be… world beaters… or even challenge for the CC this year or next or ever…
just saying that i think they’re playing better… don’t understand the strong reactions to such a benign statement…
having said that it has been a shame that the lions have been so bad… and not good for sa rugby… and i would welcome a lions revival…
as a long suffering lions fan… i salute you…
we wp fans know the feeling only too well…
2 Sep 2010, 17:11 pm
@ufo(ufo)-68: Ahhhh – now I get it. Its an anti **** Muir tangent you are on.
Ok – that makes sense.
2 Sep 2010, 17:14 pm
@Dusky(Dusky)-67:
if it’s okay with you then it’s okay with me…
google the reports yourself… but hey… no skin off my nose if you don’t believe it…
it was debated at length on this website at the time… don’t remember seeing your nic then though…
but if you were there… then all the reports were obviously wrong…
2 Sep 2010, 17:26 pm
@ufo(ufo)-70: Yes well at least the Lions are not leaking tries like they did in the S14, and for the first time this year we have a decent fly-half option or 2. But honestly, have not seen enough good things against good opposition to jump on the revival bandwagon.
Probably the next 2 games against WP and Griquas will tell…
2 Sep 2010, 17:27 pm
@Dusky(Dusky)-69:
hehehe…
i really haven’t hidden any subliminal messages in my posts… promise…
but if you insist on looking for them… knock yourself out…
2 Sep 2010, 17:29 pm
@Dusky(Dusky)-56: what are you smoking? The semi-final you lost last year to the Cheetahs, the stadium was half empty!!!!!
hehehe
2 Sep 2010, 17:30 pm
@Knersus(Regatta)-71:

Puma, sharks_lover, hard luck. Better luck
next year.
170. SODAJOE :
October 17th, 2009 at 4:20 pm
JLP will get MoM, but Ashley Johnson
showed incredible bravery and skill.
171. SODAJOE :
October 17th, 2009 at 4:21 pm
Good game guys. Well done both teams.
172. BIG HIT :
October 17th, 2009 at 4:21 pm
Well done Cheetahs
173. PETER MKATA :
October 17th, 2009 at 4:22 pm
I will ask the question again: for how long
will John Smit take the humiliation? Should
he not leave before huge damage is done to
his good name?
174. WP TILL I DIE :
October 17th, 2009 at 4:22 pm
Agreed, SodaJoe, Johnson had a great game,
as did Brussow.
175. DAVID :
October 17th, 2009 at 4:23 pm
Oh dear, the Sharks have been buying the
wrong Cheetahs.
176. JOZI :
October 17th, 2009 at 4:23 pm
#166 skopskiet: Quite right, I was
supporting them Skarks for this one but
wtf …. they must be the chokers of SA teams.
177. FISH OUT OF WATER :
October 17th, 2009 at 4:23 pm
#164 Peter Mkata: you seem rather
arrogant yourself…
178. BIG HIT :
October 17th, 2009 at 4:23 pm
#173 Peter Mkata: why target Smit when
Beast was just as outplayed, the scrum is an
8 man effort.
179. BANANABOY :
October 17th, 2009 at 4:23 pm
Well done Cheetahs , you played your hearts
out boys and the Sharks were not good
enough to close it out. Doesn ’t meant the
Sharks chocked as some are suggesting, it
shows more how well you played and
deserved it.
180. DAVID :
October 17th, 2009 at 4:24 pm
#172 Big Hit:
Why so glum, they’re not Sale.
181. SLUMTOWN :
October 17th, 2009 at 4:24 pm
Hahahahaha, Sharks have been lacklustre all
year. In the Super 14 they flaked badly and
now this. These boys need to wake up.
Their backline is letting them down.
Well done Free State!! Will be great if WP win
the next one.
Mapoe and Juries must be in end of year
squad, likewise with Johnson and WP Nel
182. BANANABOY :
October 17th, 2009 at 4:24 pm
only 1 union can win it , the Blue Bulls.
183. PUMA :
October 17th, 2009 at 4:25 pm
WELL DONE CHEETAHS. Cheetahs deserved
this win.
Good luck in the final.
184. WP TILL I DIE :
October 17th, 2009 at 4:25 pm
Well done, bananaboy, very gracious in
defeat. I feel sorry for you true Sharks
supporters!
185. DAVID :
October 17th, 2009 at 4:26 pm
Congrats to both teams for a great game.
Now, with a few Kwas to bolster the side,
the Cheetahs should have no excuses in the
S14, next year.
186. SKOPSKIET :
October 17th, 2009 at 4:26 pm
peter de Villier’s better start opening both
eyes soon, if he continues with this Sharks
front row as his starting vanguard he ’s
asking for big trouble. He better catch a
wake up and smell the coffee before he
gets a huge awakening catching him cold.
2 Sep 2010, 19:01 pm
LIONS!!!! We just need a decent tight 5!
2 Sep 2010, 21:36 pm
@RedLion is born again(RL)-79:

in all seriousness bud… the sharks ARE looking awesome… and IF i was a betting man would be tempted to put money on them for the title this year…

Finally its official, welcome back Lions ! Thanks to a Kiwi.
4 Sep 2010, 08:45 am
@Dusky(Dusky)-54: You are so out of touch, Lions are on their way up Boet
