Boks latest – Aussie bashers front Boks

Keo.co.za brings you the latest from the Springboks’ end-of-year tour.

Aussie bashers front Boks – Martin Johnson has picked the same starting side that beat Australia for Saturday’s Test against the Springboks.

Four changes are made to the England side that struggled past Samoa, with Lewis Moody returning to captain the team. South African-born Hendre Fourie will, however, get his opportunity from the bench.

England - 15 Ben Foden; 14 Chris Ashton, 13 Mike Tindall, 12 Shontayne Hape, 11 Mark Cueto; 10 Toby Flood, 9 Ben Youngs; 8 Nick Easter, 7 Lewis Moody (c), 6 Tom Croft, 5 Tom Palmer, 4 Courtney Lawes, 3 Dan Coles, 2 Dylan Hartley, 1 Andrew Sheridan.
Subs: 16 Steve Thompson, 17 David Wilson, 18 Simon Shaw, 19 Hendre Fourie, 20 Danny Care, 21 Charlie Hodgson, 22 Matt Banahan.

Coaches aware of looming axe – Bok backline mentor Dick Muir has admitted that the management team could get the chop if South Africa produces another shocking showing this Saturday. The Boks lost to Scotland last week, a defeat that comes just two months after their worst ever Tri-Nations campaign.

‘From a coaching perspective you enter this industry knowing that most coaches end up getting fired,’ Muir said. ‘Our public back home epitomise what it is about. They expect you to come over here and get the win and if you don’t get the result then there are going to be heads that are going to roll.

‘We have been in this situation before and South Africa is a proud nation that wants results.’

Muir added that coaches are less likely to survive in South Africa than in a country like England.

‘In South Africa it is probably a bit more volatile than it is here. ‘[In that environment] you have to believe in yourself, you have got to believe in your management team and your bosses. You have got to have a shared vision and hang in there in the tough times.’

‘Attitude was lacking’ – Springbok assistant coach Gary Gold lamented the lack of intensity and desire to win in South Africa’s recent loss to Scotland.

‘It was one of my worst experiences in rugby,’ Gold said. ‘It was just so disappointing to see what we had worked so hard towards just get thrown away like that. We had worked so hard in the previous two Test matches.

‘I am not saying we played well in those games, because we didn’t, but the determination was there and the attitude was there. We know it wasn’t an acceptable performance.’

Gold also admitted that poor execution let the side down in Edinburgh, and that everybody needs to take responsibility for the defeat.

‘We all need to put our hands up now and take ownership, both the coaching staff and the players. We know we let the country down, so it just means we are going to have to make up for it by winning on Saturday.’

Spies covets England scalp – Bok No 8 Pierre Spies knows a win on Saturday won’t compensate for missing out on a Grand Slam, but it could be important for the team’s confidence.

‘We would still like to finish the year on a strong note and I suppose if we win our last match it will give us something positive to take in next season,’ he said. ‘I don’t think a win over England will balance the books as far as our critics are concerned, but it will at least mean a lot to the players from a confidence viewpoint.

‘We like playing against England and we like beating them. They are a good team, a tough team to beat, and when we win against them it means a lot. Any game against England at Twickenham is a big one. So in a way it is a good thing that we get a chance this week to make up for last week’s poor performance against Scotland.’

Spies added that the recent loss to Scotland does not bode badly for the coming World Cup.

‘If we get all our top players back next year and we get back our form and win the World Cup then it won’t matter so much,’ he said.

@ Sharkie, what about Deysel, do you think he will ever get a chance on the Bok squad now with us having an abundance of forwards, i think he knows this last injury might just have st*ffed up everything for him no matter how well he plays.

I actually can’t believe that PDV doesn’t see his interview and realise what an *** he is… pleaase Piet fall on your sword please….

So Hendre reckons the blood will flow. Surely a professional sportsman should be thinking more carefully with his words since Pdiddy kops **** for his comments.
Hope the coaching staff have a chat in the refs ear because after seeing the dirty stuff in the Abs game I think there is going to be fighting.
Dam Fox is not showing the game!

Hendre is being pathetic. Hope our forwards grind him into the ground.

As an Englishman i am looking foward to this game.

Even though England have played well there are better players in the Aviva premireship who have not been picked and could make England even better.

Martin johnson has taken alot of stick but since the France game and sydney England seemed to have changed quite incredibly.

But For me the players the boks need to watch out for is Ben youngs.

Youngs for me will be the best scrum half in the world soon. His pace is unreal. We havent seen his deadly breaks but you give this kid an inch and he will take it, one of the quickest players i have seen. His tactical kicking is superb.

Ben foden every single media outlet, pundit, fan have been calling for this guy for nearly a year to be given a chance and he was given that chance against france in the last six nations game

Hes really is adapting to international rugby well. Foden really is a deadly runner. Hes like jason robinson he can break that first tackle than hes off. Brilliant accleration and he really is exciting to watch.

Chris ashton an ex rugby league player. Hes a try poacher the kid scores tries for fun. Hes a natural at it. Hes one of the most instinctive wingers in the world. He always comes off his wing looking for the ball. Makes alot of breaks and has those great off loads from half breaks as well as blistering pace.

Tony flood is a player who is slowly finding his feet. Hes a quality playmaker, hes got vision, makes breaks, great offloader and now hes starting to be a reliable goal kicker. Hes might not be the quickest but hes strong (6ft3), has a good defence and good leader now as well

BTW Hendre fourie has been impressive. Alot of ppl werent happy with this ppl thought we should go with younger guys like andy saull, tom wood, tom rees

Hes 6ft stocky, powerful ball carrier. Against samoa his debut he was quite impressive. Made alot of turnovers, good support play, very strong, good defence.

Neil back has said he should be England number 7 ahead of lewis moody.

Neil back and lewis moody played with each other for leciester tigers so it was quite a statment to make.

Fourie looks international class even when he came n against new zealand

  • 232.john123: Reply to this comment

In the fowards intresting to see young dan cole against the beast.

Dan cole has been very impressive for someone so young.

Coutney lawes in the 2nd row has really impressed 21 has no fear, powerful despite his slim frame, great tackler, good ball carrier, atheltic.

    Hes loves a physical challenge.

Tom croft is the brains of the line out very good, hes good at the break down, tackles well.

His support play is improving and hes got that lighting pace he can run 10.7 in 100m which is always a threat

  • 233.HongKongSlong: Reply to this comment

@john123(john123) : Steady on John, Tom Croft is very fast, but he’s not 10.7 over the 100m fast. Youngs has made a big difference to the England backline, they are finally starting to get quickball from the scrum half.
