Shimlas shock Maties

Maties suffered a 21-15 upset defeat against Shimlas while UJ and Ikeys recorded impressive wins in the second round of the Varsity Cup on Monday.

Shimlas picked up the biggest result of the round as they beat defending champions Maties in Bloemfontein, the latter’s first defeat since March 2009.

Former Matie wing Charl Weideman opened the scoring while flyhalf Frana du Toit added the conversion and a penalty for a 10-6 lead at half-time. Maties pivot Andre Kemp kicked a drop goal while scrumhalf Donald Stevens converted a penalty for the visitors.

Stevens kept Maties in the game with the boot, slotting another three penalties after the break but a late try from wing Jamba Ulengo sealed a great win for the hosts.

Ikeys claimed their second away win as they thrashed Pukke 36-8 in Potchefstroom.

Wings Tiger Bax and Paul Cohen, flanker Nizaam Carr and fullback Therlow Pietersen all scored tries to secure UCT a valuable bonus-point victory. Carr was named Man of the Match after a great individual performance.

In Port Elizabeth, UJ managed to hold on to a 21-16 victory over NMMU after surviving a late surge from the Madibas at the death.

Trailing by five points, NMMU camped inside UJ’s red zone in the dying minutes but they failed to finish their scoring opportunities to clinch victory. UJ outside centre Luan Steenkamp made a try-saving tackle on fullback Vuyolethu Mazaka for the final action of the game.

In Pretoria, TUT beat Tuks 46-34 in a 10-try thriller.

Tuks were the better side in the first stanza but only managed a 27-24 lead at half-time. TUT then sealed an impressive away win with a strong second-half performance, with hooker Johan Pieterse and outside centre Hansie Graaf scoring the telling tries.

    Well, i hate to sound like an ungrateful supporter, but about bloody time !! Shimlas have tons of talent pouring in every year, and they have the best schoolboy rugby side literally right next door to them.

    Interesting that most of the Maties points was scored by Donald Stevens (a Grey old boy).

    Shimlas need a better coach, and better structure. They are stuck in amateur era. The club dont have challengers in Bfn, so they dont have the need to take the step up in the local league.

    Ikeys are an excellent example of a distinctly average rugby university stepping into the pro era, and looking like a million bucks. Well done to them

    Any news/ideas who the new sponsor will be?

    As for Shimlas stuck in the 1980′s, makes perfect sense as that is where the Cheetahs seem to be…administration wise that is.

    @Cheetah Champs(Cheetha Champs)-4: As much as I want to disagree with you, it’s unfortunately true. Although it does seem Verster and his chronies heard the complaints and are trying to rectify the problem.

    It’s unfortunately true that most of the clubs are dying a slow death, because the current administration couldn’t care less about them…

    Unfortunately Verster is the main problem.

    PUK were terrible actually. Rudi Joubert has coached them into a distinctly unimaginative bunch. “Domkrag” comes to mind, if I look at their game plan. And when that failed, there was very little to fall back on. Ikeys on the other hand, very good value for money. Looked well drilled and also applied some grey matter to their gameplan. Interestingly enough, PUK claim to be the “Nr.1 Rugby University in SA” in their ads that you see in SA Rugby mag etc. If this is indeed the case, they need to improve drastically or Varsity Shield is in their future.
