Lions’ late flurry earns draw
1 Oct 2011
GARETH DUNCAN watched the Lions score two late converted tries to salvage a 25-25 stalemate against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein.
It was a surprise ending too the match as the Cheetahs were cruising 25-11 ahead with only six minutes left on the clock. But then, replacement scrumhalf Tewis de Bruyn was yellow carded in the 74th minute. The Lions capitalised in the following movement when reserve prop Jacobie Adriaanse powered over from close range. From the restart, the Lions broke down the left touchline and Michael Killian broke free to score the important try. Flyhalf Elton Jantjies did well to convert the extras after missing four of his opening six goal attempts.
With two rounds remaining in the Currie Cup league stage, the draw will prove an important result for the log leading Lions. The hosts will be disappointed as they threw away a valuable win with a poor second half showing.
The Cheetahs had a strong opening 40, thanks to the kicking brilliance of young pivot Johan Goosen. The 19-year-old converted four penalties and a drop goal to secure his team a 15-5 lead at the break. This takes his season kicking record to 30 from 31, a success rate of 97%. The Lions grabbed an early try through Cobus Grobbelaar.
It was sad start to the second half for the Cheetahs as Goosen was stretchered off the pitch after an unfortunate clash of heads with Lions fullback Jaco Taute. Replacement flyhalf Sias Ebersohn filled in, and managed to keep the momentum going. The Cheetahs grabbed a try through scrumhalf Piet van Zyl while Ebersohn added the conversion and a penalty.
However, the hosts lost their tempo in the last 20 minutes of the match. With a one-man advantage, the Lions produced a great comeback from a 17-point deficit to force the draw.

The Lions’ commitment to the ruck is pathetic. No support for isolated runners. No aggressive cleaning. Cheetahs are helping themselves buffet style.

No man. The Bulls need WP to lose to go through to the semis. The fact that it is WP that the Bulls need to replace is just a bonus.

Tact … Both teams only lost 1 game … Kings lost 4 good players due to injury (De Wet, Oelschig, Potgieter (went to the bulls) and Norman Nelson) .. they’ll obviously buy some more players – they will have to! but vs 2 years ago, Kings are doing well! from 14th in the Vodacom Cup to about 7 or 8 in SA ..not bad
1 Oct 2011, 16:45 pm
