Sharks’ flyhalf focus a boon for Boks

JON CARDINELLI writes the Springboks will reap the benefits of the Sharks’ decision to back Pat Lambie in the all-important flyhalf position.

While the speculation around the Bok coach position continues to escalate to hysterical proportions, keo.co.za’s information is that the position has been confirmed for some time. Gert Smal will be announced as Peter de Villiers’s successor next Friday, and among the many tasks he will be entrusted with will be the decision of who to select at flyhalf for the three-Test series against England in June.

Smal will finish his stint with the Ireland national side in early March, and will then turn his focus to Super Rugby and the composition of the Bok side. He will possess a good understanding of what has worked for South Africa in the past, and also what has not. There are many candidates both experienced and unestablished that will be pushing for that No 10 jersey this season, but what should please the Bok coach is that one of the strongest candidates will concentrate on one position for the majority of Super Rugby tournament.

Lambie has been used in several positions for both the Sharks and Boks. He started his career in Durban as a fullback in 2010 before shifting to centre and later flyhalf. It was in the latter position where he made the most impact, leading the Sharks to a resounding victory over Western Province in the 2010 Currie Cup final.

De Villiers experimented with Lambie as a flyhalf at international level, but was always going to favour one of Morne Steyn or Butch James for the 2011 World Cup. Steyn eventually got the nod despite his limitations on attack and defence, as De Villiers felt that a goal-kicking boot would be decisive. But the quarter-final was won by Australia thanks in large part to their brilliant defence. The All Blacks would later win the title in a similar manner, and the missed goal-kicks in that final against France didn’t end up costing them the cup.

That’s not to say that goal-kicking won’t be important going forward or that indeed Lambie doesn’t have the ability or the mettle to be a success. He showed during the early stages of the 2011 Super Rugby tournament just how much he’s progressed in this department. Given more opportunities, he will continue to develop and that can only benefit the Boks.

With Freddie Michalak targeting a move back to France in the near future, the Sharks have finally decided to hand Lambie the ultimate responsibility. Aside from goal-kicking, he will be tasked with organising the Sharks’ backs and controlling the game. His performance in the coming Super Rugby competition will be important in that it will show Smal and the Bok selectors whether he can be a sustained force in the position.

There will be other candidates for Smal to consider. Elton Jantjies will have plenty to prove after a dismal start to Super Rugby in 2011. He may have shone in the subsequent Currie Cup, but it is in the southern hemisphere’s premier regional tournament where potential internationals are measured.

After a successful Currie Cup, Lions coach John Mitchell will back Jantjies in that flyhalf role and this will allow him the platform to impress the Bok coach. Similarly, Lambie will now be granted an extended run at No 10.

Steyn is set to spearhead a new-look Bulls backline. His goal- and tactical-kicking remains among the best on the planet, but if he cannot improve his defence and attack then he has no place in the Bok side of 2012. It won’t be easy considering the Bulls have lost a whole host of established forwards, and Steyn has in the past battled to impose himself when his pack is going backward.

At this stage Lambie would appear to be the best option, but the coach is unlikely to make his decision until we are well into the Super Rugby competition. The important thing at this point is that Lambie will be given an extended opportunity, as will Jantjies and several others, to prove himself.

Actually i don’t really believe that. Who knows, I prefer him at 15 and Elton at 10 for our longer term prospects but I’m happy to see him play where he wants.

Am not crazy about him at flyhalf, prefer fullback for now, but there isnt really anyone better

It’ll be interesting to see how Morne plays outside of Hougaard. It’s a totally different dynamic to the one with FdP calling the shots from 9. I reckon Heyneke will give Morne a lot more freedom than he had with FdP.

This is really good news… (although not entirely new)…

and I sincerely applaud plumtree for taking this decision… i believe lambie will excel at flyhalf if given a decent run and allowed to play his natural game…

    good stuff all round…

  • 8.John Galt: Reply to this comment

He is one or two yards too slow to be a full back.
Rather have an out and out 15 play for the Boks like Taute.

Very glad Plum has chosen him at 10. He can now settle down and focus on this position only.

i suppose having them fight it out for the flyhalf position can only be good for the boks but expect heartbreak and dissapointment in some quarters.
there’s got to be losers for there to be winners and right now i’d have elton as understudy to morne with goosen pecking at the fringes.

can’t wait to see how morne gets the bulls backline going if he is still going to stand deep in the pocket. looking at how ireland have played with predominantly kickcking 10s in sexo and o’gara, i don’t know if smal will advocate a flat, gainline-attacking pivot.

i guess we have to wait & see.

Cape Town – The South African Rugby Union (SARU) has asked the media to assist in alerting local businesses to the activities of a Western Cape-based conman who has been attempting to defraud local restaurants.
At least two Cape Town establishments have been approached to take bookings for large groups from someone purporting to be “Chair, Organising Committee, SARU”.

In one instance a Cape Town restaurant received a booking for a meal for 27 people on the strength of an apparently forged “proof of payment”. In the other a booking was made for 36 people.

The “proof of payment” is then used to claim overpayment for the forthcoming booking. The fraudster requests reimbursement into his account in order to ensure his party is able to pay for transport to fulfil the booking.

Businesses are advised to beware of a person calling himself Craig Adams, claiming to be “Chair, Organising Committee, SARU”. He uses the email address theboks@therugby.co.za in an attempt to lend credibility to his scam. SARU has no such employee and does not operate such an email domain.

How does that relate to robot-Morne.

Could it just be that maybe , just maybe JdV and Fourie are not that great. Did we see something great from Frans at 12 in WC

  • 135.Robzim: Reply to this comment

    @capebull-122:

What we need is a flyhalf who can dictate the game.
Grant is a brilliant defender, average distributor but as far as tactical kicking and kicking for touch are concerned he is useless.

Gary van Aswegen has all the attributes to become a very good balanced no 10, but seems to be injury proned.

The Greek might still get there, but I am not sure whether he has the “hard edge” to really mix it up on a higher level- he seems a bit frail.

Coleman?- Perhaps, the jury is still out,

Burton Francis- Too slow, one trick pony- a bit like the poor man’s Willem de Waal.

Tim Swiel- Too early for him, there is only one James O’Conner.

So, imo, unless Gary can remain injury free , the Stormers might have a problem at no 10 yet again this year.

Then we will all be baying for the coaches blood, and moaning how we cant “play like NZ” and so on. Eventually everyone will be screaming for the Boks to maak sag and kick to the corners.

Some coaches have tried it (Du Plessis) and some wanted to (PDiv even). No one can stick to it because of the nature of SA Rugby and the fans.

The best is when we have the balance between the 2 – Mallet, Christie and under Jake (besides 2006).

SA Rugby is not known to think things through, let alone plan…

You see appointing the Bok coach is not a business decision in SA (what is best for the game), it is a political one in which the (amateur) ‘board’ members make back handed deals to secure votes.

That said, this year’s process although much delayed, is seemingly following a more professional approach (thanks mainly to the new guy at SA Rugby Jurie Roux).

Remember you are dealing with country and board who ‘fired’ their World Cup Winning coach whilst you knighted yours!!!

Take the super 15 and use it as a super trial….

    Form must be the yardstick

Make it known that no player has a right to the jersey…..and that every player has the chance to prove there worth in the super rugby.

Players like Taute, Minnie, Mvovo , to name a few, will bust a gut knowing they are to be given a fair chance…..

The new HC has the opportunity to cut away the culture of entitlement and favoritism that was a hallmark of 2010 and 2011……which lead to such disastrous results….

In a way Smal will be perfect, as he comes from the ‘ outside ‘ and may have less preconceived opinions than Heyneke….

i sincerely hope he makes the step up this time, grant. its an opportunity for him if he takes it firmly in his hands. he has wilted before but thats ok, he is young.

morne, if you remember took his opportunity in 2009, in 2010 we ran them very close despite the cheating, illegal play and in 2011 we all know it was all about the wc.

morne is still young and just as entitled as the next man to earn a position in the bok squad..as is elton..and goosen..and maybe..maybe..even lambie…but grant can just go ffuck himself…japanese style.

“I brought Pine (Pienaar) in who was a backline coach because I want to improve the way we’re playing. If you look at the guys we’ve recruited, they are very exciting backs.

“You always have a vision of how you want to play and then get players around that.

“We will always have a tough forward pack but we’ve looked at how the game has evolved,” Meyer said

However the changes will not be without their casualties.
“The hard decisions we had to make (were) which players we want to keep and which we will let go,” Meyer said.

I still have a pair or two from my “Soundgarden” days.

The cowboy boots was in reference to a (probably) at least 15 year old advert for the “new’ (then) Toyota bakkie called the “raider”

Guy dived up to the farm. Gets out. Farmer walks towards the bakkie and says in his thick afrikaans accent:

“Rrrrrrrrrraiderrrrrrr”. What kind of a name is that for a bakkie? next you’ll be wearing cowboy boots,

Driver surreptitiously moves behind the bakkie for cover. Looks down at his feet. He’s wearing cowboy boots.

    Classic advert.

Div: SARU too late with decision

Johannesburg – Springbok coach Peter de Villiers says the SA Rugby Union (SARU) left the appointment of the new national coach too late.

De Villiers’s contract was extended until the end of January while SARU completed the process of finding his replacement.

“It is already too late for the coach to sit down with the Super Rugby coaches,” De Villiers said on Thursday.

“The appointment should have been made in December because we didn’t have an overseas tour this time.”

He said the new Bok coach would not have enough time with the team before the start of the three-match Test series against England.

The Super Rugby season will recess for the June international matches, with the Boks playing the English Roses a week after a gruelling weekend of local derby matches.

Speculation about his replacement had been rife in recent weeks. No formal shortlist had been made public.

SARU, however, last year confirmed De Villiers was on the shortlist, while Bulls director of rugby Heyneke Meyer and Ireland forwards coach Gert Smal were touted as favourites.

De Villiers confirmed a meeting with SARU CEO Jurie Roux on Monday where they “spoke about this and that”, adding that he did not know whether he was a candidate for the job or not.

While doubting whether SARU had any interest in him, he said he was open to take the reins in a caretaker capacity.

“There is always a bigger picture and one should not be egotistical. It will always be an honour to make a contribution,” De Villiers said.

De Villiers, however, said SARU pulled the rug from under his feet with the extension of his contract.

“Now there isn’t any other work out there. Perhaps it would be better to say that they would no longer be making use of my services. It creates certain expectations,” he said.

The Bok mentor said there were no regrets in his tenure as national coach, which spanned four seasons.

“Hours of planning and consultation went into the job… .I can say with complete sincerity that every single decision I have made in the last four years has been a rugby one.

“That is why it has been easy for me to make them without any agendas. It is true that one doesn’t always make the right decisions, but I have taken responsibility for it.

“You can’t satisfy everybody, but I can keep my head high as I haven’t enriched myself.”

De Villiers felt the amount of talent he had brought through was a feather in his cap, with players like Tendai “Beast” Mtawarira, Zane Kirchner, Heinrich Brüssow, Francois Hougaard, Andries Bekker and Morné Steyn making their debuts under him.

“If I can give one medal to myself, it is the one for giving young talent the opportunity, who will now make the core of the team for the future.”

De Villiers said the Super Rugby recess would give the new coach a different challenge as it was a crucial stage of the cross-continental competition.

He said if the franchises stood a chance of advancing to the playoffs they would be reluctant to release their players to the Springbok team.

De Villiers suggested that injuries could easily be feigned to keep the players out of the June internationals.

He also felt the franchises held too much power and had made life difficult for him.

Lambie staying at 10 is the best thing for Bok rugby. Of all the young guns in contention he has it most where it counts the most – between the ears.

  • 354.Sydney Bok: Reply to this comment

@Bok fan-139: That would be sick! Frans must get back to SA. I worry about his conditioning in the NH. Should get used to playing at the higher tempo of SH rugby. I think at no.10 the Boks will be covered this year. Positions that concern me more are 11 and 14. Habs is past it. JPP doesn’t seem to care and Ndungane is just way too slow.

  • 355.Sydney Bok: Reply to this comment

@grant10-165: Who are these stalwarts? Bakkies will be the only player the Boks will miss. Hopefully will get Smith back. Juan is one of the most important players for the Boks. He increases go-forward by at least 25%. Schalk may still have some uses but he’s got nothing between his ears. Alberts should be Bok 8 in my opinion. This year if we have made the right choice for Bok coach we might actually end up with a pretty decent Bok team. Frans Steyn for me is the answer at 12. There’s a lot of youth coming through. Its exactly what we need right now.

It’s the wingers that worry me. SA doesn’t have any decent wingers maybe apart from Mvovo and Aplon. We have a crisis in this position. Wingers have been forgotten about. They are key to playing attack rugby. In SA wingers seem to be like fillers. Just there to get 15 men on the field. This is where we need the x-factor, right now we have a serious shortage.

  • 356.grant10: Reply to this comment

    @Sydney Bok-355: good post mate….

Yeah …I THINK bAKKIES MAY BE THE BIGGEST LOSS, ALTHOUGH gUTHRO TOO been playing brilliant rugby for boks….

The rest we can cover…..A Bekker was ready to take over from Matfield [ must stay fit though ].

Key wil be new coach ditching Spies and M Steyn, if that doesent help I am afraid we will struggle again…

  • 358.Sasuke: Reply to this comment

@Sydney Bok-355: True. There are some good young wingers but they lack experience even on superugby level.

My choices would be JP, Aplon, Mvovo, Basson.

  • 359.Bok fan: Reply to this comment

@Sydney Bok-354: Ja the guys dont look good whenever they back from France, imagine Steyn back at the Sharks playing with Lambie for a full super 15 :)

Yes Hababa should have gone a few years ago. JPP has some insane talent but like you say his attitude is very up and down. Maybe a shift to 15 would help?

    Nice try ….

I happen to know for a fact that Patrick Lambie has a terrible shoulder AC that needed operating on a while back already.

and to think that the whinging Yappies had the gall to take the dole-bludging Kiwis to task over Wayne Barnes after RWC’07. Barnes allowed fwd-passes for a try, sent a man to the bin, and went 50mins without so much as a penalty. What 1-eyed self serving PrickBoks, coming up with BS conspiracy theories to mask the fact their team is sh*t.

“Rugby World Cup referee Bryce Lawrence will not be travelling to South Africa for the Super 15.

This follows the uproar over his handling of the South Africa-Australia World Cup quarter-final, won 11-9 by the Wallabies, and subsequent fears for his safety.

After the match, the Kiwi ref received email and Facebook threats, and was heavily criticised by Springbok captain John Smit and former World Cup final referee Andre Watson of South Africa.

Referees have received their match schedules for the Super 15, which starts on February 24, and Lawrence said he was not listed to control any games in the republic.

While part of him would have liked to have travelled to South Africa to deal with the criticism and get that over and done with, he could understand that Sanzar – which controls the three-nation contest – did not want a sideshow to detract from its tournament.

“In some ways I’d like to go and front it, but it’s not really my decision.”

Sanzar referees boss Lyndon Bray could not be reached for comment, but it is understood there were fears a fan might have tried to avenge South Africa’s quarter-final defeat.

In an interview with the Weekend Herald, Lawrence said he had been hurt by the extent of the fall-out over the way he controlled the match that put the Springboks out of the World Cup. He accepted that his performance warranted criticism, but he could not accept the implication that his performance was biased.

The conspiracy theory that a win for Australia gave New Zealand an easier road to the Webb Ellis Cup has gained credence in South Africa.

“I got quite a few threats, people telling me if I came to South Africa to watch my back because they’d take me out,” Lawrence said. “The thing that scared me most was that people would really believe I cheated deliberately and fixed the game.

“The thing I pride myself on the most is that I’m up front and honest. For people to say I didn’t referee the breakdown very well, that didn’t hurt at all.”

It was Lawrence’s handling of the breakdown, the most convoluted of rugby’s laws, that created the biggest upset.

The winner of the Referee of the Year title at this year’s New Zealand Rugby Awards conceded he took the wrong approach into the game.

With the benefit of hindsight, he said, he would have refereed the breakdown more “technically”.

Had he done so, Wallaby flanker David Pocock might have been penalised a couple of more times than he was – but he would have also earned a lot more penalties for his team, so dominant was he in that area.

If they go with Michalak @ 10 and Lambie @ 12 they can drop a certain Meyer Bosman and win something for a change . . . .
