Meyer to lean on Bulls brains

Heyneke Meyer is expected to name John McFarland and Bazil Carzis as part of his management team when he is announced as Springbok coach on Friday.

Meyer has enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship with the duo at the Bulls. McFarland has served as a defence coach at the Pretoria franchise, while Carzis focused on the players’ conditioning. It’s believed that Saru chief Jurie Roux was at the Loftus Versfeld offices yesterday to discuss Meyer’s management team, and that these two are strong candidates to join Meyer in the Bok set-up.

McFarland may not, however, occupy the same position at the Boks that he does at the Bulls. It’s been rumoured in some circles that he could even take on the role of kicking coach. This all depends whether Saru is able to secure the release of defensive guru Jacques Nienaber from the Stormers.

Nienaber has worked wonders with the Cape franchise, who boast the best defensive record in Super Rugby over the past two seasons. Stormers head coach Allister Coetzee told this website two weeks ago that he was adamant his management team would remain intact, so it may take a great deal of persuasion on Saru’s part to ensure Nienaber’s services are secured for the Boks.

Coetzee denied Nienaber would leave after it came to light that Rassie Erasmus would be leaving the Stormers. Erasmus and Nienaber have formed a strong partnership at the Cheetahs and later at the Stormers, and it’s not crazy to suggest that Nienaber will follow Erasmus to wherever the latter chooses to settle in the near future. Erasmus denied that he had been offered a technical advisor post a couple of weeks back but there are fresh reports that Saru wants Erasmus on the management panel.

There have been several names thrown about as possible backline coach options. Paul Treu has enjoyed mixed success with the Bok sevens side, but his lack of coaching experience in 15s may count against him. Former Bok winger Pieter Rossouw is another candidate having worked with the Bulls in recent times.

What nobody seems to know is who will take control of the forwards. A source told this website that Victor Matfield may be brought in as a lineout consultant, but otherwise there has been speculation that Meyer himself may focus on the forwards as a whole, or that Erasmus could take charge in this department.

What is more than likely is that Meyer will choose to work with the people he knows and trusts. The Bulls management members are tight and have enjoyed a lot of success over the years, and Meyer may look to bring that through to the next level.

Yes, back when they were also winning… when they had the countries best players.

That’s no excuse for the best players not being selected NOW.

nobody said anything about none of it was his fault, he was too naive to know from first out exposure that Smit, Gold and Muir, and ultimately Rassie had a hand in it too, were the architects of De Villiers inconsistency, in spite of which he came pretty close to success, all he had to do was shunt that useless palooka Smit out the start team who ultimately was the one ruined him.

Lets see Meyer with all his bevy of Bulls brain surgeons forge the way ahead.

He better deliver else his heralded messiah status gonna take a few knocks

Good players being ignored at the expense of Bulls players… that will P155 me off.

    1. Dean Greyling will be ahead of Coenie Oosthuizen – shocking call.

    2. Juandre Kruger will probably hold Andries Bekker out of the starting line-up.

    3. Pierre Spies and one of the Potgieters will have the jump on better players like Duane Vermeulen… even Ashley Johnson better then those above. Even Schalk’s place in the team will probably be in doubt… have to make room for another of the Bulls pathetic loose-trio (easily the worst from the 5 SA teams).

    4. Morne Steyn has kept his starting flyhalf position.

    5. Wynand Olivier has a good chance at being the starting 12. Frans will again be stuck at fullback.

    6. Zane Kirchner will be there ahead of Jaco Taute or Gio Aplon.

    7. Bjorn Basson to become the 1st-choice Springbok winger… until he makes a fool of himself that is.

Wow, Saffa supporters have to be the sourest bunch of grapes I’ve ever come across…. I swear this appointment has led to more grumbling about “knuckle dragging” and Pretoria cronyism than there were complaints 4 years ago when the much maligned PDiv was appointed…

For years we’ve had to listen to mutterings about how if Meyer was coach the cup would have been in Springbok hands again, well now there’s no excuse. ANy failure can no longer be put down to a political appointment, so man up and take some responsibility.

De Villiers could have rather done with someone like me in his corner instead of those self seeking untouchable aura’s who ultimately are the ones who brought him down.

@hendrikp-54: Ag nee hendrikp, die “p” is seker nie vir positief nie.

Heyneke is nie onnosel nie.

Ek stem dat Spies 50%+ beter moet speel as in 2011. Alberts sal HM se Danie Rossouw wees en dan is daar Vermeulen en Strauss.

Doppies le Grange is baie under rated.

    7. Bjorn Basson sal eers die Bulls se span moet haal. Oupa Akona se work rate is baie beter en dan is daar Hougaard wat imo ‘n beter vleuel as skrumskakel is. Moenie verbaas wees as Fourie du Preez vinnig terug kom nie – eers as kaptein en dan as speler.

Gee kans, die tyd sal leer………

On current form NO Bulls loosies should be in the bok squad.

Ja these are some serious worries.

I hope Meyer can shock us all with some Ruthless Calls.

The should try add a clause in his contract.

Stegmann is fuuucking CUCK! Go look at he stats for turnovers he is at the bottom!

So if not for his so called pilfering what should he be there fore? He is definitely not a ball carrier..
Tell me wtf this oke has done to be seen as a bok, please i would like to see so i can have a clearer view of what the fuss is about?

Zane ahead of Taute, FSteyn, Aplon or Lambie is a joke. No offence, he is a solid CC& SuperR player butt like WO tried and tested at test level with no success?

  • 66.Guns: Reply to this comment

Meyer must lay down the law fast and make his mark by being ruthless inselections.
He can start with droppig that fking showpony spies and leat players earn their way into the team.
If they deserve it and pove it in the Super 15 geate no problem. Spies will be selected thouh based on his CV/XP with boks and not his
performance, that is for absolute sertianty. Fore he reckord Have no problem eating these words if proven differently in the SUper 15 this year..

**** me mate… you’re speaking as if this already happened… getting a bit ahead of yourself there…

Juandre Kruger for one was rubbish overseas and made no impact in the CC and now YOU reckon one of the best rugby brains in RSA, who has not even been appointed the coach yet, would drop Bekker for this guy…

No offence mate… Gunther is correct… you’re getting a tad ahead of your rump-us…

Spies and WO made the Bok squad for the last 4 years and it had ZERO to do with Heyneke Meyer…

Meyer worked with what he had at the Bulls… who is to say if he had JDV or Willem Alberts at his disposal per se… he would not have started them?

    Calm down…

  • 68.Guns: Reply to this comment

fook this pc/keyboard it can’ keep up with my typing.

Come on Heyneke Meyer we challenge you – Be a ruthless Bas*ard in your selections. Even the bulls can only benefit from such a scenario.

I think you guys are selling heyneke short… and making one helluva lot of assumptions about him…

when asked before about who his captain would be no one could expect him to say burger or smith or whoever… obviously he is a bulls man… the bulls DOR… he would only name a bulls player… so spies it was…

and sure he’s backed a lot of the bulls players… but what else is he expected to do…? coach a team and always tel them he’d rather have other players…? he backed the players in the bulls set up as any other coach would back the players in their own set-up… nothing sinister there at all…

but anyone who thinks heyneke thinks that he had ALL the best players in SA in the bulls… is dreaming and/or letting their paranoia run rampant…

i don’t think he will have a bulls bias AT ALL… now he will have all the best players in SA at his disposal and as a rugby kenne he must be drooling at the thought of what he can do when he can pick and plan and direct all of the very best in the country to take on the world…

it’s every sa rugby supporters dream… to be THE bok coach… heyneke now has the chance to make his mark or world rugby history…

anyone who thinks he’s gonna stuff that up by clinging only to the players he coached in the bulls is really being daft and letting the provincial emotions get the better of them…

good things are gonna start happening in sa rugby… heyneke is gonna make sure of that…

let the rest of the world start worrying… now…!

@Guns-64: Guns, may be you don’t understand what I wrote in Afrikaans. I did not praise Stegmann’s skills. I said that HM prefers to play a recognised fetcher and that Brussouw is surely the no 1 fetcher. At the Bulls HM always choose a fetcher, even Derick Kuün if Stegmann wasn’t available. Who else if Brussouw is injured? Minnie of the Lions or Stegmann.

Jacques Botes is in and out of the Sharks team. Daniel is not a real fetcher and Francois Louw is in France? Who else do you think is an international fetcher?

Remember that Heyneke was last involved with the Boks in +_ 2001. The present Boks in the Bulls were chosen by Jake White / PdV and the national selectors – where the Bulls has zero influence

thanks man… yeah it’s not… but hell, in sa we struggle to take off our provincial coloured shades…

i’m very excited about everything and can’t wait for heyneke to start telling us his plans and vision for the boks…

i really believe the kiwis and aussies need to start worrying…

also like the fact that he is not an arrogant man…

  • 74.Tjokker: Reply to this comment

Instead of criticises Heyneke for nothing, rather criticise Allistar Coetzee for be so small minded. That is surely sour grapes. If the Boks need Nienaber as a defence coach (Stormers brag about his abilities) then release him to serve his country. The Bulls spent a lot of money to broaden HM views and knowledge.

  • 75.ufo: Reply to this comment
