Kenyan recruit shines for Bulls

Flanker Daniel Adongo scored a hat-trick in the Blue Bulls’ 33-29 pre-season win over the Free State Cheetahs in Pretoria on Friday.

The training game allowed the two teams to give their Vodacom Cup players some game time. The Cheetahs could’ve edged ahead at the death as they turned down two kickable penalties to pursue the try, but take nothing away from Adongo’s impressive Bulls debut at Loftus B field. The 22-year-old former Sharks loose forward, who stands at 1.93m and weighs 112kg, crossed the chalk on three occasions in his first appearance for his new union.

Flank Jean Cook also scored against his former team while wing Sampie Mastriet finished off a blindside attack. Flyhalf Lionel Cronje added four conversions.

The Cheetahs led 17-12 at the break, thanks to props Lourens Adriaanse and Marcel van der Merwe and the boot of flyhalf Sias Ebersohn (two conversions and a penalty). Centre Barry Geel and wing Dusty Noble scored tries in the second half, but their team still fell five points short of victory.

The Bulls and Cheetahs will also play in a Super Rugby warm-up match in Polokwane on Saturday.

How we let this oke go is beyond me?! The managers at the Sharks need their heads seeing to. We could’ve done with an extra loosie especially this guy. If this guy is a stand out player for the Bulls then lets get him in the Boks! Can he also play no.8?
