RYAN VREDE writes that Rassie Erasmus is on Heyneke Meyer's radar but he continues to struggle to fill the other voids in his coaching team. Erasmus hasn't been formally interviewed yet but Meyer is an admirer and he is likely to appoint him as his technical analyst shortly. Erasmus has modelled himself on Meyer, particularly from a structure building perspective. They shared ideas often when Erasmus was director of rugby at Western Province and his work ethic and sharp mind appeals to Meyer. The role would suit Erasmus perfectly. He excels at dissecting matches, studying individuals and ... Read Article9 Feb 2012
Alan Solomons says the Southern Kings have the necessary plans in place that will make them competitive in Super Rugby next year. There have been mixed reactions following the confirmation of the Kings' admission to Super Rugby for 2013. The Eastern Cape franchise has been given a free ride into the tournament, despite Saru not being sure of how they will be accommodated along with the country's five other teams: the Bulls, Sharks, Stormers, Cheetahs and Lions. While Saru's proposal of entering six franchises next year will be formally discussed with Sanzar in the near future (despite CEO Greg ... Read ArticleAuckland 8:35am - 10:00am (SAST)

The EP Kings have taken former Griquas flyhalf Earl Rose on a month-long trial. The 28-year-old was released by Griquas at the end of the 2011 Currie Cup campaign after only spending one season with the Kimberley union. Rose will now hope to impress First Division losing finalists the EP Kings over the next four weeks to earn a contract. 'Earl is with us on a trial agreement,' EP Kings head coach Alan Solomons told keo.co.za. 'He will be on trial until 17 February.' Rose has suffered a series of disappointments over the last couple years. Prior to his exit at Griquas, he spent five years ... Read Article8 Nov 2011
The Springboks will play Argentina in their first game of next year's Rugby Championship, the four-team southern-hemisphere tournament replacing the existing Tri-Nations. An agreement confirming Argentina’s participation was signed in Auckland recently by the Sanzar Joint Venture partners after several months of negotiations with the Unión Argentina de Rugby (UAR) and the International Rugby Board (IRB). The new-look tournament has been given a new name and a new fixture line-up with two Tests on each match day. Each participant plays home and away matches against each of the other three ... Former Wales wing Shane Williams will retire from all rugby at the end of the European season. The 34-year-old ended his Test career against the Wallabies in Cardiff last December. He then signed a contract extension with his club Ospreys until the end of the 2013 season, but both parties have agreed to release the veteran from the deal a year early. Ospreys have announced that Williams will then take up an ambassadorial role at the club, where he 'will promote rugby in and around the region whilst also working in conjunction with the Ospreys' existing and future commercial partners'. Shimlas thrashed defending champions UCT 38-10 while Maties, Pukke and Tuks won their matches in the opening round of the Varsity Cup. At the Green Mile in Cape Town, Shimlas hooker PW van Vuuren, No 8 Fanie van der Walt and scrumhalves Kevin Luiters and Pieter Rademan secured the students from Free State a bonus-point win. Wing Nico Scheepers also added four conversions and three penalties. UCT could only add two tries through fullback Dillyn Leyds and skipper Ntsolo Setlaba as they lost their first opening game since 2009. The IRB will add three more full-time teams to the 2012-13 Sevens World Series. The IRB confirmed on Tuesday that this initiative is set to grow sevens rugby's support group ahead of the code's Olympic debut at the 2016 Rio Games. The number of teams that will take part in each event in the World Series will increase from the so-called 12 'core' sides to 15. This will see the Hong Kong Sevens (March 23-25) double up as a qualification tournament to determine the three new teams competing in all events in the 2012-13 campaign. 'As we build towards Rio 2016 and our Olympic Games debut, it ... Read Article11 Jan 2012
The International Rugby Board are considering hosting some of Wales' World Cup matches in 2015 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. England won the right to host the event and organisers are expected to make use of some of the country's numerous world-class football stadia. The venues will be confirmed once the tournament dates are finalised with the pool draw to follow in November. However, IRB chief executive Mike Miller said travel logistics could make the 75 000-seater Millennium an option. 'Yes there is an issue of Wales playing at "home", but for people in the west of England, ...
