Despite hopes, Lions remain destitute
The Lions showed promise against the Stormers, were up against a Waratahs side on a run of terrible form, and even though away from home, could maybe have secured a win. Unfortunately, that was not the case.
The Tahs had not beaten the lions since 2015, losing all five of the last encounters since then. They had also lost all three of their opening Super Rugby matches. But the Lions, who have proved (outside of a close encounter against the Stormers) a team short of form and talent, were unable to capitalize on any historic advantage.
Poor defensively in the first half, as they have been so far this tournament, the Lions were cut open by the Waratahs attack. Ill discipline didn’t do much to aid there cause either and the Waratahs led 19-10 at half time. The Lions then started the first half strong, but not strong enough to reflect on the scoreboard and would ultimately only manage a late try in their 29-17 defeat. The Waratahs in turn secured their first win this season, in bonus point fashion.
