Francois van Coke to club Derick Hougaard

South African musician Francois van Coke is set to don a pair of mitts and take on former Springbok flyhalf Derick Hougaard on the 29th of May as rock meets rugby in a 6-round bout at Time Square’s Sun Arena. Mark Keohane and the MoneyMan sat down with Van Coke to discuss the fight.

Before launching a solo career in 2015, Van Coke was the lead man for groups Fokofpolisiekar and Van Coke Cartel. His new solo venture is in the ring though, and having admittedly been in “a fight in two bars” in comparison to Hougaard’s athletic background as a professional rugby player, Van Coke said he has been in some serious preparation.

On the flip side, Hougaard had said he feels they are “in the middle”, with him having done nothing for the past two years. “People talk about muscle memory. But there is not much muscle memory in me. My muscles have dementia. I practise, the next day I feel great and the next day I cannot get up.”

A humble admission perhaps for a man who has played professionally for the Springboks, Bulls, Leicester Tigers and Saracens.

Regardless of background though, Van Coke is looking to emulate the Brian Lima effect on Hougaard when the pair do meet.

The bout will be 6 rounds of 1:30 seconds each, while the resting period in between rounds will be 1 minute. In the MoneyMan Show, Van Coke chats about his background, coming into boxing after years of a career quite far removed from the brutal sport, as well as how he sees the fight unfolding.
