Shaky Stormers stutter to win against Jaguares
The Stormers were more pretenders than Super Rugby contenders in beating the ill-disciplined Jaguares 28-20 at Newlands.
The Stormers scored two first half tries and added a third just after half-time but spent the final quarter, a man down and hanging onto a five point lead. A last minute Damian Willemse penalty denied the visitors a losing bonus point.
The Stormers lead 15-6 at halftime.
It was the Stormers third successive win against the Jaguares and also the seventh time in the last nine seasons that they have won their opening fixture.
Damien de Allende scored the tournament’s opening try and he looked dangerous on attack, although he was guilty of one powder puff attempt of a tackle that led to a Jaguares try.
The Jaguares, since their introduction into Super Rugby, have been among the most ill-disciplined and it took just 25 minutes of the 2018 season for them to lose their first player to a yellow card. Be assured it won’t be their last yellow card!
De Allende, Siya Kolisi and wing Raymond Rhule scored for the Stormers. Willemse added two conversions and two penalties.
The Jaguares scored through wing Emiliano Boffelli and a penalty try. Nicolas Sanchez kicked a conversion and a penalty and Boffelli added a long range penalty.
