Investec Champions Cup enjoys record-breaking start to season
The 2026/27 Investec Champions Cup launches in record-breaking opening weekend
European and South African club has enjoyed a record-breaking start to the 2026-27 season, with soaring stadium attendances, millions of television viewers and unprecedented demand for finals tickets highlighting the growing appeal of the Investec Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup.
Figures released by EPCR following the opening round show that 253,000 supporters attended matches across the two competitions, representing a 24% increase compared to the corresponding round last season.

The attendance figure marks a record start for the competitions and underlines the appetite for European club rugby, despite ongoing debate about scheduling, travel demands and the financial pressures facing supporters.
Television audiences were equally impressive, with a combined average aggregate audience of 3.5 million recorded for the two competitions on French television.
The strong viewership reflects the popularity of European club rugby in France, where the likes of defending Champions Cup winners Bordeaux and six-time champions Toulouse continue to attract considerable interest.
The opening weekend provided plenty of entertainment, including Bordeaux’s thrilling 36-36 draw against Gloucester at Kingsholm and Toulouse’s dramatic 43-40 victory over Exeter.
South African teams also contributed to an action-packed opening round.
The Bulls and Stormers claimed emphatic bonus-point victories over Stade Français and Bristol Bears respectively, while the Sharks produced a memorable 40-33 away win against Lyon in the Challenge Cup.
The Lions delivered a courageous performance against La Rochelle, while the Cheetahs suffered a heartbreaking 29-27 defeat to Bayonne.
Despite the results and exciting rugby, relatively modest crowds attended the South African home fixtures.
Speaking on the Keo & Zels Show, Mark Keohane questioned why the Stormers attracted approximately 6,500 supporters for their European opener after drawing more than 40,000 for their previous local derby against the Sharks.
The Bulls, meanwhile, attracted approximately 9,600 spectators to Loftus Versfeld.
Zelim Nel suggested that economics, rather than a lack of interest in the competition, was a major factor.
With supporters facing numerous home fixtures throughout the season and additional financial pressure ahead of Christmas, fans are increasingly having to choose which matches they can afford to attend.
Nel also suggested that staging the Champions Cup pool rounds in a consecutive four-week window could help the competition build momentum and make it easier for supporters to plan.
However, EPCR’s opening-round figures suggest that the broader European audience continues to grow.
The competitions recorded a 13.9% increase in social media followers compared to the opening round of the 2025-26 season, indicating expanding engagement across digital platforms.
There has also been exceptional early demand for the European finals weekend in Lyon.
According to EPCR, 70,000 tickets have already been sold for the 2027 finals, representing record demand for the showpiece weekend.
The Challenge Cup final is scheduled for 22 May, with the Champions Cup final following on 23 May.
For South African supporters, the prospect of seeing a local franchise compete for European silverware remains a major attraction.
The Sharks have already lifted the Challenge Cup, while the Bulls and Stormers are targeting deeper runs in the Champions Cup after previous campaigns ended before the semi-final stage.
Keohane believes both franchises now possess the squad quality and ambition to compete with Europe’s established powers.
The challenge will be translating their impressive home performances into victories on the road.
With attendances climbing, television audiences growing and finals tickets selling rapidly, the opening-round figures provide an encouraging picture of European club rugby’s commercial strength.
For EPCR, the numbers suggest the competitions are continuing to attract new interest. For South Africa’s franchises, the opportunity is to turn that growing stage into a platform for European success.
