Sharks youngsters breathe new life into Durban giants
The Sharks remarkable transformation under JP Pietersen is gathering momentum, with a new generation of fearless youngsters breathing life into a club that has too often failed to deliver on its considerable potential.
A commanding 15-3 victory over Munster at Thomond Park provided the latest evidence of that revival, as the Durban-based club secured their third successive win in Europe and climbed into the URC’s top four.
Speaking on the Keo & Zels Show, Mark Keohane and Zelim Nel praised the Sharks’ growing confidence, with special attention reserved for exciting young fullback Zekhethelo Siyaya.
The youngster claimed his third consecutive man-of-the-match award after another impressive display, producing the kind of performance that has made him one of South African rugby’s most talked-about prospects.
“Taking over the rugby world is Zekhethelo Siyaya,” Nel said.

“He’s looking absolutely outstanding, and for a youngster, mate, he really stood tall in a game that is very physical.”
Nel highlighted the significance of producing such a performance against Munster, whose suffocating defence and relentless physicality make them particularly difficult opponents.
The Irish side were restricted to just three points, a result that underlined the Sharks’ defensive commitment and growing maturity.
For Keohane, the turnaround is especially significant when compared with last season.
The Sharks failed to win any of their nine matches in Europe despite fielding a squad packed with established Springboks and expensive recruits.
Now, with a younger group supported by experienced campaigners, they have won three consecutive matches on the continent, against Lyon, Cardiff and Munster.
Keohane believes Pietersen deserves considerable credit for creating an environment in which emerging players are encouraged to express themselves.
Nel suggested that the youthful enthusiasm has also revitalised several senior players.
“You kind of feel like the youngsters in that team are breathing a little bit of life back into some of these veteran Springbok players,” he said.
The contributions of Litelihle Bester, Jurenzo Julius, Ethan Hooker and Siyaya have been particularly encouraging, while Jaden Hendrikse and Edwill van der Merwe have also contributed to the team’s growing momentum.
Nel reserved praise for No 8 Nick Hatton, describing him as an overachiever who has fought his way into prominence without the reputation or attention enjoyed by more celebrated players.
Keohane challenged that description, arguing that Hatton’s performances should simply be recognised as those of an outstanding rugby player.
The pair also highlighted the influence of former Stormers back Suleiman Hartzenberg, whose move to Durban has brought renewed confidence and attacking involvement.
Nel believes shifting Hartzenberg closer to the action at outside centre has helped unlock his considerable potential.
“The closer he is to the ball, for me, the better,” he said.
The Sharks’ improvement comes at an important stage of the season, with Pietersen’s side well positioned on the URC log ahead of the November international break.
Nel believes their ability to win away from home could make them genuine contenders as the campaign progresses.
While the Bulls and Stormers have also made strong starts, the Sharks have demonstrated that their revival is about more than collecting victories in Durban.
For Keohane, the most encouraging development is that the club is finally beginning to match its resources and reputation with performances on the field.
The Sharks have always possessed the talent to compete among the URC’s leading teams. Under Pietersen, they are increasingly showing the character to belong there.
