Lethal Leyds inspires Stormers & Gelant is Bulls’s magician
The Bulls, 19-0 down in as many minutes, produced a fabulous comeback 43-34 win against the high riding Jaguares in Pretoria and in Cape Town the Stormers were always in control in downing the Sharks 27-16.
The Lions were the biggest beneficiary of the weekend results because the Bulls win means they remain top of the South African conference and in control of their own destiny. A victory for the Jaguares would have moved them into top spot.
It seemed, at least for the first quarter, as if this victory would be a formality as the Jaguares raced to a 19-0 lead but the Bulls, thanks to some Warrick Gelant magic, stopped the rot and added five more tries in getting their sixth win of the season.
Dillyn Leyds, playing in his 50th match for the Stormers, provided the moment of inspiration the Stormers required to break the Sharks.
Stormers v Sharks Match Centre
The Stormers were leading 14-9 when Leyds, as he has done most of the season, found something special to cut the defence and set up the Stormers third try. It would prove decisive in the outcome.
The Sharks can still make the play-offs because of the Rebels defeat earlier in the weekend but the integrity of Super Rugby will remain under the microscope when a team wins six matches from 15 and still makes a play-off.
