South Africa are the best rugby team in the world and they have the luxury of the best blindside flanker in the world.

Pieter-Steph du Toit is the gold standard bearer in world rugby. The Springboks giant  is the player of his generation and the best forward in the world.

Du Toit, twice the World Player of the Year, captained South Africa against England and against Scotland in the opening two rounds of the Nations Championship. He also played in the Springboks season opener against the Barbarians.

He has missed 10 minutes out of a possible 240, despite missing the entire club season in Japan because of an operation and recovery on the sidelines.

He played No 4 lock against England and No 7 flank against Scotland. These are two very different positions. He also took on the captaincy role after Siya Kolisi was a late withdrawal on the eve of the England match at Ellis Park in Johannesburg.

Du Toit was the Player of the Match in the Springboks 12-11 win against the All Blacks in the 2023 World Cup final. He was also the World Player of the Year.

He made 28 tackles against the All Blacks in the final in Paris in 2023.

Du Toit’s influence is measured in work rate, physicality and an ability to play wherever the Springboks need him.

Against England and Scotland, the Bok captain delivered all three.

Du Toit played the full 80 minutes in South Africa’s 45-21 win against England at Ellis Park and backed it up with another 80-minute effort in the 42-28 victory against Scotland at Loftus Versfeld.

The double World Cup winner made 25 tackles across the two Tests, missing just one, while contributing 21 carries, 62 metres and 43 attacking cleanouts.

Against England, Du Toit was required to shift between lock and blindside flank. He responded with 12 carries, 40 metres, 14 tackles and four lineout wins.

RugbyPass described his performance as another example of the “Malmesbury Missile” at his seek-and-destroy best.

There was no drop in intensity against Scotland.

Du Toit made another 11 tackles without missing one, carried nine times, won three lineouts and completed 24 attacking cleanouts. He also made five passes as his role expanded beyond that of a traditional blindside flank.

His leadership was especially significant in a younger Bok loose trio, while his breakdown work helped South Africa contain Scotland’s physical challenge.

The numbers speak to consistency rather than one spectacular moment.

Across 160 minutes, Du Toit completed 25 of his 26 tackle attempts, made 43 attacking cleanouts and another 16 defensive cleanouts.

He did not make a handling error in either Test.

Du Toit has always been valued for what he does without the ball. Against England and Scotland, he again showed just how much rugby he gets through with it as well.
