SACS celebrates oldest Schools Derby against Bishops in winning style

The early bragging rights in the most traditional and historic schools derby in South Africa belong to the boys from Newlands. At least for now.

SACS v Bishops is the oldest Schools Rugby derby in South Africa

SACS beat Bishops 22–17 at the Memorial Field in Newlands in the latest chapter of South Africa’s oldest schools rugby derby.

The result settled a fixture that was split evenly the previous season, when the sides drew both meetings, at SACS and at Bishops’ Piley Rees Field.

The significance of the rivalry goes beyond results.

South African College Schools and Diocesan College were the two sides involved in the first recorded rugby match at Newlands Rugby Ground, which would become the spiritual home of Western Province and Stormers rugby until the move to the DHL Stadium in Cape Town five years ago.

The fixture itself predates most organised schoolboy competitions in the country. It sits outside rankings cycles and festival structures, which is why results tend to resist broader seasonal trends. Form going in has historically had limited bearing on outcome.

Bragging rights among those associated to the two schools is always seen as a prize within Cape Town’s southern suburbs and surrounds, but the rivalry is healthy and a celebration of schools rugby in the province.

The venue rotation, at the Memorial and Piley Rees, maintains a home and away rhythm that reinforces parity. Each ground carries its own conditions and familiarity, which historically contributes to narrowing margins rather than widening them.

SACS produced the first Springbok (alphabetically) in Ben Duff and SACS old boy Percy Montgomery is the first Springboks Test Centurion. Kyle Brown, among the finest Springboks Sevens specialists, is also from SACS.
SACS, pre the Second World War, produced among the most Springboks in the country, but in the modern era the number of Springboks has been limited to Montgomery.
Bishops have produced many Springboks, with Stormers No 10 sensation Sacha-Feinberg Mngomezulu the latest to wear Green and Gold.
The Stormers currently have several Bishops players in their squad and Director of Rugby John Dobson is a Bishops Old Boy.
