Erasmus explains “extra loosie” selection
In Eben Etzebeth’s injury-enforced absence for the upcoming French test, the versatile Pieter-Steph Du Toit has been drafted in at number 4.
Du Toit starred for the Boks in four consecutive tests on the blindside flank, but upon Duane Vermeulen’s return and Franco Mostert’s unavailability, was shifted back to number five for last weekend’s 12-11 loss to England.
With Etzebeth out, Mostert fills straight back in at lock, while coach Rassie Erasmus has opted to further shift Du Toit, now into the number 4 role.
In speaking to Netwerk24, Erasmus explained his selection.
“It’s actually just another new position in the scrum. He is basically another loose forward who packs down as lock in the scrum.”
“He offers the team a lot at flank and lock. You don’t often get versatile players like him.”
The Boks will take on France in their second test of the November tour at 22:05, SA time, on Saturday.
