Bring Nienaber home for World Cup glory
He coached the Springboks to 2023 Rugby World Cup glory and is the best defensive coach in the sport. He simply has to go to the 2027 World Cup as the Boks chase an unprecedented three in a row.
Jacques Nienaber must return to the Springboks before the 2027 Rugby World Cup, according to Mark Keohane and Zelim Nel, who believe Rassie Erasmus needs his trusted former coaching partner back alongside him.
Speaking on the Keo & Zels Show, the pair made an impassioned plea for Nienaber to return to South African rugby following confirmation that Leinster have appointed a new head coach.
With Nienaber’s current contract reportedly concluding at the end of June, Keohane believes the timing presents an opportunity to reunite the coaching partnership that helped deliver South Africa’s successive World Cup triumphs.
“We want Jacques Nienaber back in this country. We want him back with the Boks, and we want him going to the World Cup,” Keohane said.
The former Springbok head coach joined Leinster after South Africa’s 2023 World Cup triumph, bringing his defensive expertise to one of Europe’s most ambitious clubs.
During his time in Ireland, Nienaber has gained valuable experience working within a different rugby environment, an advantage Keohane believes could prove particularly useful when the Springboks face Ireland.
“Shoring up our defence, adding that IP, knowing how to basically unpick Ireland because he’s coached them for the last three years,” Keohane said.
Why Nienaber matters to Erasmus
For Keohane, the argument goes beyond defensive structures and technical expertise.
He believes Nienaber plays an important role in bringing out the best in Erasmus, having worked alongside him through some of the most successful periods in Springbok history.
“I think he is key to Rassie getting the best out of Rassie as well,” Keohane said.
The pair’s professional relationship was central to South Africa’s transformation from a struggling international side into back-to-back world champions.
Erasmus and Nienaber developed a coaching partnership built on trust, tactical discipline and a shared understanding of what is required to succeed under the pressure of Test rugby.
While Erasmus provides the broader vision and strategic direction, Nienaber’s attention to defensive detail and execution helped establish the Springboks as one of the most difficult teams in international rugby to break down.
Keohane believes that combination remains valuable.
“Having Jacques around is a great foil for Rassie in his coaching,” he said.
Nienaber could strengthen the Boks for 2027
Nienaber’s experience at Leinster has added another dimension to his coaching career.
Keohane highlighted his involvement in the Irish province’s URC success and appearances in major European finals, suggesting the move abroad has provided valuable knowledge of the opposition South Africa must overcome.
For Nel, there is little doubt about the benefits of bringing Nienaber back into the national setup.
“Yes, please! The sooner the better, mate. Bring him back,” Nel said.
Keohane also highlighted the former Bok coach’s personality, describing him as someone who combines a strong sense of humour with an uncompromising approach to his responsibilities.
“He’s got a great sense of humour, he’s a great guy. But when it comes to business, he’s super serious, and there’s no mucking about.”
South Africa’s pursuit of a historic third successive World Cup title will require every possible advantage, particularly against opponents who have spent years studying the Springboks’ strengths.
And although Erasmus has continued building his coaching structures since the 2023 triumph, Keohane believes the return of his former lieutenant would provide another significant boost.
For Keohane and Nel, the message is unmistakable.
Bring Nienaber home, reunite the partnership and give the Springboks another weapon in their pursuit of World Cup history.
