Weekend Wrap: Boks dominate Georgia, Junior Boks crowned Champs!

A powerful Springbok performance in Mbombela led the way on a weekend that saw the Junior Boks lift the U20 world title! Here’s your weekend wrap:

Rassie Erasmus’s men asserted forward dominance from the start, with debutants Boan Venter and Marnus van der Merwe powering over early in the match. Georgia opened the scoring with a maul try from hooker Vano Karkadze, but was quickly neutralized as the Boks took control. By halftime, the score stood at 22–10, and South Africa pulled away emphatically in the second half with scores from Edwill van der Merwe (who bagged a brace), Damian Willemse, Kurt-Lee Arendse, and Handré Pollard. Bench contributions and strong offloads—including one from RG Snyman to set up a late try—underscored the depth of the squad, even as the team showed areas for improvement in handling and discipline. 

Not long after, the Junior Springboks claimed victory in Rovigo, defeating New Zealand 23–15 in the U20 World Championship final. Their powerful scrum tactics and organised defence pinned down the Kiwis’ attack, securing South Africa another age-grade title. 

Meanwhile, in Hamilton, the All Blacks completed a 3–0 series sweep with a 29–19 triumph over France. New Zealand came from behind, scoring 12 consecutive second-half points, including a timely try from debutant Brodie McAlister. The performance showcased their composure under pressure and adaptability in test rugby. 

Across the world in Brisbane, the British & Irish Lions kicked off their test series against Australia with a convincing 27–19 win. Finn Russell’s tactical mastery paired with dominant breakdown work from Tadhg Beirne and Tom Curry set the foundation as Australia’s late fightback fell short.
