World media salutes Boks as England are buried in Nations Championship
The world’s rugby media awed by the world champion Springboks
The Boks reminded the rugby world why they remain the international standard after destroying England at Ellis Park.
Boks make a statement the world could not ignore
The world’s rugby media were not shy to heap praise on the depth and quality of the Boks as Rassie Erasmus’s Rainbow Warriors started the season with a performance as emphatic as their finish to the 2025 season.
South Africa’s 45-21 Nations Championship win was reported in England as a brutal reality check for Steve Borthwick’s side, in France as another show of Springbok control and in New Zealand as proof that the Boks remain the All Blacks’ biggest obstacle in the new global competition.
RugbyPass called it a fifth successive England Test defeat and noted how South Africa “turned on the power” after England had fought back from 17-0 down to 17-14.

The Guardian led on South Africa making a statement, with Robert Kitson reporting that the world champions ran in seven tries and exposed England’s discipline issues.

The Observer framed it as England surviving an early massacre threat, only to discover that the Boks’ many threats could not be contained for 80 minutes.

The Telegraph reported that England were “blown away” as South Africa cruised to a 45-21 win in Johannesburg.

The Times was savage, arguing England are too comfortable being called “brave” and “plucky” while accepting mediocrity after another heavy defeat.

The Sunday Times / Stuart Barnes went further, saying England must start taking risks, even floating Henry Pollock as a future captaincy-type gamble after the 45-21 defeat.

The Sun went tabloid direct: England were “pummelled” by the world champions at altitude, with Ellis Park doubling as a warning to English sport.

Rugby365 focused on the Boks’ adaptability, praising the players and coaches for problem-solving after losing Siya Kolisi and Eben Etzebeth before kick-off.

Planet Rugby called it a demolition and said the 24-point margin flattered England, with Damian Willemse singled out as flawless on a special Bok night.

L’Équipe in France wrote that South Africa, despite the late losses of Kolisi and Etzebeth, did not tremble and crushed England with a second-half acceleration.

Rugbyrama said the English were “destroyed” by the South African machine at Ellis Park, with the match shaped by the Boks’ starts to each half.

1News New Zealand viewed the result through All Blacks eyes: South Africa top the Southern group and are already New Zealand’s greatest obstacle to winning the inaugural Nations Championship.

The common thread was simple: England were not without moments, but the Boks were without mercy. The world saw a South African team missing icons, reshuffling leadership and still putting 45 points on England at Ellis Park.
